In Columbian culture, society is hierarchical in which authority figures, mainly those involved in religion and justice, are considered to have a great deal of influence and responsibility towards the town they preside over. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Marquez attacks this idea and suggests that these figures are superficial and unimportant. He does this mainly through the religious and judicial figures of the Bishop, priest, police officer and the colonel as authority figures that ignore their duties, thus making authority in the village in illusion.
Catholicism plays an important part in Columbian society as it influences a number of its actions and beliefs. Thus, prominent religious figures, much like the bishop and the priest, are highly respected as well as having an impact on the villagers. When the bishop arrives at the village, the blessing given is listless, as the bishop only makes ‘the sign of the cross in the air opposite the crowd in the pier’, which was ‘without malice or inspiration’ (16). Here, Marquez is attacking religion in the sense that it’s disappearing from the village, as he describes the bishop’s blessing as a ‘fleeting illusion’ (16). Moreover, the actions of the bishop are ironic. Rather than the bishop conveying the ideals of Catholicism, as he should do because it is his responsibility as a bishop, he acts apathetically. He doesn’t put much effort into his blessing and doesn’t even get off the boat. This shows Marquez’ opinion of authority figures, which are that authority figures are indifferent in helping out the village in creating a better Catholic society. Pornoy then goes to Clotilde Armenta’s shop, where he begins ‘chatting with the brothers’, and then finally goes to Colonel Lazaro Aponte where he ‘revealed the Vicario brothers’ intentions to him’ (55). By Faustino Santos immediately trusting that Leandro Pornoy would take action suggests that on the surface, authority figures seem to be respected and trusted, however the truth is that they don’t do much and just pass the responsibility onto someone else. The act of passing on the obligation symbolises that authority figures lack initiative and are lazy. Even though Leandro Pornoy has an excellent opportunity to arrest the Vicario brothers, he just ends up chatting with them and does not help to stop the murder. Again, an authority figure has proven to not fulfil his duties, making authority an illusion.
When it comes to analyzing the “banana massacre” scene in chapter 15, I found three narrative techniques the author used to describe this scene. García Márquez’s not only criticizes the Catholic Church and the fickleness of human nature, but he also subliminally relates his themes—suffering is impartial, religion is faulty by practice, and filial piety—through the third-person omniscient narration of “Un Señor Muy Viejo con Alas Enormes.” In addition to García Márquez’s narrative style, the author employs the use of literary devices such as irony, anthropomorphism, and a melancholic tone to condense his narrative into a common plane. García Márquez’s narrative style and techniques combine to create a linear plot that connects holy with homely.

It also provides the important historical background on the Catholic Church and its impact on the American Southwest. Willa emphasizes, through her writings, the hardships of the people involved in making this part of America what it is today. It points out the influence of the earliest Spanish missionaries of the 16th century through the latter part of the 19th century involving French missionaries and exposes the corruptness as well as the dedication of the missionaries of the church. To support my position I will attempt to relate the moments where the Christo Aparecido is said to show signs of life, in particular his stay in Mexico City during the colonial era and his role in more modern times with rival groups clashing over its efficacy in the village of Totolapan.

Marquez informs readers how individuals only see the different ways for personal gain, thereby not having “time” to help others in need. As Santiago Nasar nears his death, many of those who are informed of it do nothing to save his life, as they all rely on others to help rather than taking matters into their own hands and stepping up. Ignorance by specific townspeople, like Angela Vicario, Lazaro Aponte, Clotilde Armenta, and even a friend, Cristo Bedoya. Each person’s ignorance caused them to fail in helping a fellow citizen to their small town while some did not take enough initiative in preventing the murder.
Religion has had a profound effect on human culture; unfortunately, the trouble with it is faith, which creates skepticism in many individuals. In order to accommodate the issue of faith, religions have regulations, values, and ceremonies, making religion a belief system, hence creating clarity to support faith. Catholicism has become a belief system that feeds its follower with answers; however, these answers are only assumptions. There are no factual answers, and as a result, religious leaders have created an expectation in which religion is supposed to fit; nonetheless, its accuracy is unknown. In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings,” the values of religion are the center of criticism. A man with enormous wings, the protagonist of the story, is never strictly classified as man or angel. He is a rejected by society because he goes against the society’s expectation of what a true angel should be, an expectation taught to them by religion. The ambiguity of the old man with enormous wings tests the true faith of the followers of Catholicism, symbolizing an archetypical Christ figure. Both the priest and society’s foul response to him demonstrates the society’s understanding of religion to be superficial. As a result, the story argues, followers of religion must not rely on the assumptions their religion has created but believe instead, with faith.
Style: The typical Magical- Realistic story of García Márquez placed in a familiar environment where supernatural things take place as if they were everyday occurrences. Main use of long and simple sentences with quite a lot of detail. "There were only a few faded hairs left on his bald skull and very few teeth in his mouth, and his pitiful condition of a drenched great-grandfather took away and sense of grandeur he might have had" (589).
