The use of the atomic bomb has a big enough impact to end the war.It can also serve as a warning message for the rest of the world, particularly the Soviet Union.World War II has gone on for long enough, the world is in a good enough position in the war to end it. The only major concern for ending the war is Japan. Their opinion on the matter is a conditional surrender, where they stop fighting, but some conditions must be met. Although it has to be an unconditional surrender in order to prevent something like this from happening again. The use of an atomic bomb to end this conflict would work because of the physical appearance of the results have a psychological effect that can’t really be achieved with anything else. is the fact that once the United States uses the bomb, the world will know about it so, there should be a way to monitor and control the development and use of these weapons. An atomic bomb is a feasible option because of the visuals it will produce, despite the loss of Japanese lives.
“The effects of the atomic bomb, while about the same as a normal air raid, will produce enough effects to make a bigger impact on the rest of the war.” Each bomb is estimated to have the equivalent effect of from 5,000 to 20,000 tons of TNT now, and ultimately, possibly as much as 100,000 tons”(Doc 1). Although, the atomic bomb will work better than a normal air raid because none of our enemies knows about the atomic bomb. The visual effects this produces is extremely different from the incendiary air bombings.”The active material of the bomb itself is toxic. There is about 109 as much toxic material initially in the bomb itself as is needed for a lethal dose” (Doc 2)The bomb produces a large cloud surrounding the targeted area then the rest of the radiation is spread out further. This will have a huge impact on the world. This issue of going this route is that the United States will do devastating damage to Japan and its people. The loss of civilian lives isn’t ideal. If there was another alternate solution that would still have the same impact as atomic bombs without killing innocent lives, it would be an infinitely better solution than this. But this the way the world can have a higher chance of forcing the Japanese to
surrender. The Psychological effects of the bomb is a strong reason why the United States should use the Atomic bomb. This is because this option offers a shock factor. The atomic bomb causes massive explosions and no one knows about the bomb, so the unexpectedness of the bomb, the visual and physical effects of the bomb will help end the war. That’s what makes it different from continuing the incendiary raids, invading or negotiating with Japan.”...but that we should seek to make a profound psychological impression on as many of the inhabitants as possible” (Doc 6).This government document states that the atomic bomb should be used specifically for the psychological effects. This is because it will produce a large and visually intimidating result. With the results, it should make an impact on their position in the war and where Japan thinks it is in the war. Another thing that helps is the surprise factor.Very few people in the entire world know about the Atomic bomb and even less know about the destruction it can cause. This would be a great way to end the war because it makes a huge impact. This will not only cause Japan to end the war but also to send a message to the soviet union. Japan will be an example to the rest of the world to show what the United States is capable of. The reason why the Allied powers need a complete surrender is a preventative measure so that something like this doesn’t happen again. They are willing to go to extreme lengths in order to keep fighting this war.”Rather, the Japanese as a nation have a strong concept of national survival, regardless of the fate of individuals...The Japanese believe, however, that unconditional surrender would be the equivalent of national extinction.”(Doc 5). The way the United States distribute this power to the rest of the world is something the countries have to figure out. The United States and its Allies shouldn’t keep the atomic power just to themselves. That would just have us at an unfair advantage. The United States could quite easily become corrupted because only the allied powers would be able to use the atomic bomb.”...all of the scientists, including those on the panel, feel great concern for the future if atomic power is not controlled through some effective international mechanism.”(Doc 9).So the way the war can end using this power and a way to control what happens afterward is to give the countries the same power. “If after this war a situation is allowed to develop in the world which permits rival powers to be in uncontrolled possession of these new means of destruction, the cities of the United States, as well as the cities of other nations, will be in continuous danger of sudden annihilation”(Doc 8). By having everyone have the same power and having a means to control it, this solution is feasible. The countries of the world all get the same ability to completely destroy each other. So if one country attacks another, they can expect the same amount of destruction to happen to them. The world and its countries would need to find a way to manage themselves and others in order to prevent one country gaining an advantage over others. The matter of establishing these rules is urgent, there shouldn’t be any room for any country to get ahead and break the rules before they’re even established. The atomic bomb to warn the Soviet Union and to end the war would be the best outcome, because the psychological and the physical impacts that the bombs make will accomplish those goals. This is because the explosion is visually impressive and no one knows about the power we have, so it would be unexpected. The loss of lives and the effects of the radiation are part of the shock factor and while not ideal, have to happen when the United States uses the atomic bomb. The problem with using the atomic bombs, is that obviously, the world will know about it so to make sure everything is fair, we would have everyone be able to produce atomic bombs, that way if someone attacks another with atomic bombs, they can have the risk of the same amount of damage done to them.Even the scientists that were working on the bomb anticipated the problem and it shouldn’t be kept to the United States because that country would have too much power.
Japan was depleted of resources by the time the atomic bombs struck(Tucker 2). If the war continued, Japan would completely run out of supplies leaving citizens to starve, and killing more innocents the longer the war continued. The first stage of the war in Japan would have lasted over a year(Walker 2), which could have caused hundreds of death in just the first stage of fighting. Japan’s citizens “were also being prepared to fight to the death”(Tucker 1) before the war ended. Therefore confirming the fact that the atomic bomb saved the Japanese from going through a long struggle of starvation and
The United States of America’s use of the atomic bomb on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has spurred much debate concerning the necessity, effectiveness, and morality of the decision since August 1945. After assessing a range of arguments about the importance of the atomic bomb in the termination of the Second World War, it can be concluded that the use of the atomic bomb served as the predominant factor in the end of the Second World War, as its use lowered the morale, industrial resources, and military strength of Japan. The Allied decision to use the atomic bomb not only caused irreparable physical damage on two major Japanese cities, but its use also minimized the Japanese will to continue fighting. These two factors along
Were the atomic bombs the only solution to stop the war? Could there have been other solutions? Both atomic bombs were necessary to stop any further possibility of hostilities. These hostilities came in the form of landings on the Japanese islands, a possible Anglo-Soviet War over Far East interests.
...s who would do anything to win their war so a powerful weapon was needed to weaken their will. The bomb?s intense impact saved more soldiers? and civilians? lives involved in the war than it destroyed. The damage the atomic bombs produced was miniscule compared to the massacres the Japanese militarists created. The bomb clearly improved American foreign relations, especially with the Soviet Union. The choice to use the atomic bomb was justified because it coerced a Japanese surrender, saved countless lives, served as retribution for the sufferings of many people, and acted as an anti-Soviet deterrent.
There has been a long- standing debate on why the atomic bomb was used to defeat Japan. The threat of Russian advancement in Europe and in Asia was enough to worry the top officials in the United States and British governments. Wherever Russia would go, they would conquer that area for themselves. The imminent invasion of mainland Japan and the allied casualties that came with it were also a factor in the decision to drop the bomb.
But the Japanese military was cruel and had a mindset almost suicidal and the only viable way to win the war and prevent the least amount of American lives lost was to speed up the process with the use of atomic weaponry. Dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was not an easy decision by the U.S. military and government and as the president stated it was not something that was taken lightly or was likely to be used again unless necessary. The Atomic bomb had quite an impact on American military strategy and it is important with the amount of impact two bombs can have on not only the United States but the world that we understand the reasons this kind of weaponry is used in the first place as a well calculated last
The statement “Killing 150,000 people in less than a second actually allowed fewer lives to be lost.” might sound horrendous. However, that statement is the reason why the United States was able to win the Second World War. In contrast to this statement, some people might argue that it is inhumane to massacre that many people in less than a second. The dropping of the atomic bombs on August sixth and ninth of 1945 was the correct decision for American in order to effectively and efficiently end World War Two. America should have dropped the bomb because it saved American lives, there was a lack of incentives not to use the bomb, and dropping the bombs was the quickest way to end the war.
In my opinion, the decision to use the atomic bomb was harsh and rash, but necessary to end the war and protect American lives and interests. Sometimes harsh decisions need to be made in order to serve the greater good. It was somewhat unjust to the Japanese civilians but in the end saved many military lives that would have been wasted if the war dragged on for who knows how many more years. This is why, in the end, I feel it was the best way to put the storm of World War 2 to rest.
The atomic bomb was effective and brought an end to the war. It likely saved millions of American and Japanese lives and prevented a potential conflict between America and Russia. Determining whether the bomb was essential to ending the war is a complex issue.
The dropping of the first atomic bomb marked a turning point in the way nations fight one another. The destructive nature of the atomic bomb changed the course of warfare forever. “The effectiveness of nuclear deterrence is best explained by the fact that it was based on fear unlike other peace-keeping strategies of the twentieth century.” This gradual shift to a “fear based” strategy was in response to the failures of previous peace keeping strategies earlier in the century during World War I and II, including the Wilsonian ideals, the treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I, and the concept of appeasement prior to the start of World War II.
During the final stages of World War II the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the country of Japan. On August 6, 1945 America dropped the first nuclear weapon ever used in war, an atomic bomb by the name of “little boy.” It killed approximately eighty thousand people, not including the amount of people that died due to the radiation exposure. Then on August 9, 1945 America dropped its second atomic bomb by the name of “fatman” that killed roughly forty thousand people. The dropping of the atomic bombs lead to Emperor Hirohito announcing Japan’s surrender in the war on August 15, 1945. “Why We Dropped the Bomb” written by Gar Alperovitz discusses the use of the atomic bombs, why they were used, and how it helped America gain political power. “Thank God for the Atom Bomb” written by Paul Fussel discusses how the atomic bombs were used to save lives against the Japanese. Gar Alperovitz’s article is a more persuasive piece compared to Paul Fussel’s article, because it provides facts and examples that help us understand why America used the atom bomb and how it helped America’s political status.
The dropping of the bomb brought unending effects to the Japanese but also caused a quick ending to the war. In my opinion the atomic bomb was needed. The effects of the bomb did affect many people and caused unnecessary deaths but if it wasn’t dropped many more American deaths would have occurred. Not only did the bomb save lives, it helped end the war quickly and get Japan to surrender. The bomb caused fear in many other nations making the United States the strongest country. Soon after the bomb was dropped many countries feared the development of atomic bombs. This facilitated peace talks and preventing of wars. Each side had their own opinions as to why or why not the bomb should be dropped. The moral and ethical debate over the decision to drop the atomic bomb will never be resolved, however it did bring an end to the most devastating war. If an atomic bomb were to be used today, or accidentally set off, it could wipe out the entire earth whereas the destruction and radiation alone would have devastating effects. Cancer would rise dramatically and a nuclear winter where all the light is extinguished could occur (7 Crucial Pros and Cons of the Atomic Bomb,
Some believe that the atomic bombs that was dropped on Japan were completely uncalled for and were an excessive show of force which could have been easily avoided through diplomatic and reasonable means. With this in mind; Japan was ready to surrender before the bombs were dropped. More than 60 of its cities had been destroyed by conventional bombing, the home islands were being blockaded by the American Navy, and the Soviet Union entered the war by attacking Japanese troops in Manchuria. Japanese lives were sacrificed simply for power politics between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Use of the bomb was more to scare Russia than to defeat Japan. Although it did work, Japanese lives were sacrificed simply for power politics between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Also some people believed that the use of the Atomic Bombs was racially motivated. In like manner that there were other alternatives; Conventional firebombing would have caused as much significant damage without making the United States the first nation to use nuclear
One alternative might have been to arrange a demonstration of the bomb. If representatives of the Japanese government, military and its scientific community could have seen the bomb, it might have been enough to convince them of the foolishness of continued resistance. Had the atomic bomb not worked the United States would have looked weak and foolish. Also, if America was trying to show that they had more power they should have at least dropped it in less populated area still showing what the bomb could do instead of killing more than 200,000 innocent lives. The people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not criminals they were not guilty of what was going on. Their was many diplomatic options available that could have changed this action. Like for 9/11 their was many Americans killed and all of a sudden it became World Tower Day. The nukes were a hundreds of times worser than those of 9/11. Everyone was innocent so why was it okay to kill hundreds of people in Japan there's really no
When the bomb on Pearl Harbor was dropped it hit a military base. When the bombs on Japan were dropped they hit factories and hospitals. In Hiroshima the bomb had landed over Shima Surgical Hospital and the second bomb landed on a race track in Nagasaki. America knew that there was no military bases where they were dropping the atomic bombs. Yet they went ahead with the plan anyways. The aim was to take out as many people as possible. Former President Harry Truman did not care if there were soldiers in Hiroshima or Nagasaki. All he was worried about was inflicting pain and destruction on these citizen filled cities. Hiroshima was picked because it was seen as a “military target” only because it had many factories which could produce for the war. Another reason was because the population was so huge. The Americans wanted something to make a statement wiping a city clean would definitely make one. “So, they decided this bomb would not just kill — it would do something biblical: One bomb, from one plane, would wipe a city off the map. It would be horrible. But they wanted it to be horrible, to end the war and to try to stop the future use of nuclear bombs.” (Why Did The U.S. Choose Hiroshima?). Nagasaki was not even supposed to be the intended second bombing. The U.S. had sought to drop the atomics over Kokura. But do to weather conditions the bomb was forced to be dropped
