Atlantis Myth vs Today’s Science
Now that we know the foundation of the Atlantis myth we can now speculate if this is even possible with today’s science and geography. Atlantis was said to be bigger than Asia Minor and Libya combined. This statement made by Plato in the Critias is most likely not true because Atlantis would have to be in the Mediterranean Sea or within a few miles of the Mediterranean Sea such as the Atlantic Ocean or Indian Ocean.
The other thought could be that the size was gravely misjudged through the ages and maybe when it got to Plato the myth had outgrown the size of the city. A more logical explanation could be that Atlantis was smaller than once though and was present at the western part of the Mediterranean, between the coasts of West Africa and East South America or somewhere by the horn of Africa.
Many are skeptic as to whether Atlantis existed solely because of the size but many researchers believe that the books Timeus and Critias are too detailed to be made up by Plato. Unfortunately the books of Plato’s thoughts and descriptions get cut off at the end of the second book hence ending the story of Atlantis quite abruptly. Some think that either the end of the story was lost during a burning of an attack on one of the Greek cities or that Plato’s patron for the project, Dionysius I, was going to publish the books as prose and poem and try to become famous. Unfortunately Dionysius died unexpectedly and Plato did not finish the story.
Ever since the idea of Atlantis being a city explorers and scientists have looked for Atlantis. One idea is that the Mid-Atlantic Ridge was caused by the sinking of Atlantis. But this is disproved because if Atlantis did sink in the Atlantic Ocean then it would not have created a ridge or ridge like area. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is caused by Divergent tectonic plates in the ocean which creates the ridge. The sinking of Atlantis could not have done this. Not only is this impossible but the descriptions given by Plato would also be off. The Mid-Atlantic ridge is a mountain like area going from north to south for a few thousands of miles; Plato described Atlantis a circular island that was maybe one hundred miles in diameter. Therefore this theory does not work.

Kidagakash Nedakh, or Kida for short, is the princess of the lost continent of Atlantis in the movie Atlantis: The Lost Empire. She has bright white hair, bright blue eyes, and a dark tan skin color. She adorns Atlantean-style attire which is closely related to an ancient civilization’s style. Kida is the deuteragonist of this movie meaning that she is the person second in importance to the protagonist. The events the princess endures throughout the movie give rise to the essence of her character. Kida’s traits, both personal and cultural, come from her empire’s history which empowers her purpose in her role as the Princess of Atlantis.
Although most readers suggest Tom Sawyer is a pre-teen because of a few of his personalities, the truth is he is ageless because he acts a different age throughout each predicament he encounters. Throughout the book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Tom, the ageless boy, acts a different age for each personality. E.L. Doctorow states:
In the life of every individual, there are various events and stages, such as death, crime, overcoming fear and undergoing moral growth, which transform immature individuals into serious and mature people. In Mark Twain’s novels, The Adventure of Tom Sawyer and The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn, one sees this transformation and growth in the two main characters by facing conflicts and events, these being Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn
Tom Sawyer is a piece of satire that makes fun and highlights many of societies errors while being comedic. It is written by Mark Twain, also known as Samuel Clemens which is his real name. The main character of Tom Sawyer is a mischievous boy named Tom Sawyer who gets up to all sorts of things such as tricking other kids into doing work for him or showing up to his own funeral, all of these stories filled with many underlying themes. One of the themes that Mark Twain presents to us through Tom Sawyer is that the institution that includes teachers, parents, and sometimes peers, is not doing a good job of teaching good moral principles to children. When someone doesn’t have very strong moral principles, it can lead to many things such as not having a strong sense of what is right or wrong, thus making bad decisions.
In “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, written by Mark Twain, a teenager named Huckleberry Finn discovers himself on an extensive runaway excursion from his father down the Mississippi River helping him find morality and individualistic responsibilities. As the novel progresses, the reader sees a large contrast between the two main characters, Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer. Romantic Tom and Realistic Huck are friends down this road of never-ending adventure. Huck and Tom both vary and differentiate greatly through their individual capacity of cerebral performance, respond to society and the life they’re surrounded by, and their different reactions to slavery around them, especially Jim.

The Troy of which all of this was based on, did exist. It is located in the northwestern corner of Turkey, and was excavated by an archaeologist named Heinrich Scliemann in 1868. Troy is separated into 9 layers, with each one going further back in time, and layer 7 is the one depicted in the movie and the books. The walls that were built around Troy were shown to be strong, so it could have withstood siege for a long time. During later excav...
The first reason I had to give up my drinking habit was my health problems. After many years of drinking, I had become a heavy drinker, and I consumed a large amount of liquor in a very short time. For example, I drank one liter of whisky in less than five hours. I only ate small amount of food while I was drinking because after I had had two or three drinks, I lost my appetite. I was not eating regularly, and I was suffering from stomach pain frequently. I noticed myself losing weight and feeling fatigue most of the time. I also experienced insomnia when I did not drink, so I had to drink to fall asleep.
Several now carry digital copies of literature sources. Understandably, some libraries exclusively allow and support for the purpose of electronic sources as being the primary foundation. Yet, some raise the concern that the libraries will be taken over and lose the mass number of physical books. However, in their Australian Academic & Research Libraries article “Practical Overlap: The Possibility of Replacing Print Books with E-Books,” Craig Anderson and Jeanie Pham point out, “This investigation [which tests if a library could go completely electronic] demonstrates that it appears unlikely that more than 26% of current print holdings could be replaced with e-books.” The percentage is not in the higher range of 70%. Therefore, it shows that there is still hope for books in libraries. Numerous children’s lives deal with reading books in the library. The abundant options of creative books a child could pick from is endless, and it would be an awful sight to see this iconic experience replaced with a kindle or
The lost city of Atlantis is one of the world’s greatest mysterious till this day. It’s an even more older mystery than the legendary Bermuda Triangle. For generations people have been wondering how Atlantis fell or if it even existed, but many people believe it actually existed. There is no actual proof but there are many different stories from different cultures all over the world talking about Atlantis. Scientists have been trying to find some kind of evidence of Atlantis’ existence but find nothing. Our technology is very limited when it comes to deep sea exploration. This world is mainly made up of water. It would be very difficult and time consuming to explore the oceans and our technology won’t be able to cover it all. Maybe someday we will be advanced enough to find some kind
Plato gave the first and principal written account of Atlantis in his dialogues, “Critias” and “Timaeus”. In his description, Atlantis was a huge island located near the Straits of Gibraltar. In this island, there was a great empire which had flourished more than nine thousand years earlier. Atlantean residents had extraordinary intelligence. Their society was far more advanced than any other civilization at that time. The wealth of Atlantis was so unimaginable that even the walls were covered in gold. Furthermore, Atlantis had a huge trading network and a powerful navy. But with the passage of time, the Atlanteans became more and more arrogant, and they even wanted to rule the whole world. They were defeated by brave Athens soldiers. After that, fatal earthquakes and floods occurred in Atlantis; and in a single day and night, the island of Atlantis was swallowed up by the sea.
Paper books are more durable and more engaging to the readers than ebooks. According to Sammons’ (2013) study, “A paper-bound book can outlast the life span of a human being [while] [t]he typical lifespan of a high-tech device is about 2-5 years.” This shows that the books that buyers have purchased in apps that exist in those devices will perish when the device becomes more damaged or not updated to the owner’s wants. If this is the pattern of book readers then it can be assumed that with time there will be less and less books that people will be interested in or even saved. Another reason that they are better is they keep the reader’s attention for a longer time. Sammon’s (2013) study also found that, “When you are reading a paper-bound book, there is nothing else you can do with that book. You entire attention is focused on the text and on nothing else [while reading an e-book has many distractions such as the web].” This shows that when readers are reading paper books they are more likely to focus only on the plot and the characters of the book w...
Intelligence agencies around the world, particularly the U.S., have started surveillance on their own citizens to maintain national security. While stating that it is to protect the people, the government uses the internet to survey its own people to thwart terrorism, but at the cost of personal privacy. The idea of government surveillance in America has its roots in the 1930’s over a wiretapping case, Katz v. United States, where the police “placed an eavesdropping device on a public payphone” to record his illegal gambling operation (Esau 58). The Supreme Court ruled that the police “violated the Fourth Amendment,” and the case was thrown out of court (Esau 58). Today, there are rules, requiring warrants to be obtained before performing any surveillance by a “judge with jurisdiction over the matter” (Esau 58). Over the past years since 9/11, terrorism has increased worldwide, as has the effort to thwart it. After 9/11, the Patriot Act was implemented to streamline the efforts needed to obtain warrant. Proving ineffective, President Bush expanded “approving wiretaps without warrants” by
Reading has been an important part of our daily living as it helps us gain a better understanding of our surroundings and discover new concepts; with that in mind, as technology paves the way for new inventions, methods of reading increases, which then compels more people to read in comparison to the people who read in the past. With the help of today’s electronic tools, reading literature is more accessible than ever before. The population of readers has increased and diversified and now consists of individuals who read using their smartphones, kindle, tablets, and all the like. Whether reading a cover letter, interpreting an instruction manual, or even reading a mathematical problem in paragraph form, reading is everywhere, which makes it an essential component of our lives.
