One of the most high paid jobs at this moment of time and always are in the field of sports. But the money is concentrated in a few sports and for a few athletes rather than equally amongst all athletes. According to one of my interviewee, NBA players are paid $24.7 million on an average yearly while the president of the United States is paid only $400,000. Professional athletes should be paid the amount they deserve to get paid rather than being given millions and millions. Instead of spending high amounts of money on some professional athletes the money should be used for opening more and more coaching centers which can be for the betterment for the athletes as well as the younger upcoming athletes.
Mostly athletes sign contracts for a particular club or team they play for and don’t believe in being paid per match they play as they get a collective pay rather then getting paid in parts. Contracts should not be signed with athletes rather athletes should be paid for each match individually which they play. According to one of my interviewee the soccer player David Beckham had signed a contract with a club wherein he was paid $255 million for a 5 year contract.

He played 1 year for the club and got injured in a game where he took 2-3 years to recover from it and could not play for his club. This way the club suffered a huge loss as their money was completely wasted and there wasn’t any betterment of the club. To avoid these types of money losses athletes should be paid per game as sports are full of injuries. Majority of sports enthusiasts prefer watching the game at the stadiums which costs them a lot of dollars rather than watching it on their televisions.
According to one of my interviewee, Basketball players are paid by the revenue which is collected when people buy tickets for watching a game. The tickets can be as expensive as $30,000 for a final game making it really difficult for normal people to buy and watch a game at the stadium. The interviewee himself had seen a game of NBA at New York where he got his ticket for $5,000. If the players are paid millions the ticket prices will be very high. But, if the players are paid 1-2 million the prices could be cheaper and the excess money could be used for the recreation and development of the stadium rather than all the money just going to a few
players. There is no equality of income amongst athletes of different sports some are highly paid whereas some are paid a few thousands. According to one of my interviewee, professional NBA athletes are paid an average of $24.7million per year which is very high as compared to $1 million for baseball players and only $300,000 for badminton players. There should be equality in the income distribution for sports wherein all professional sports athletes should be paid somewhat similar amounts rather than some being paid millions whereas the others being paid a few thousands. Moreover the more popular sports withdraw a higher amount of money not only on the athletes but on their training, better equipments and world class coaches. The amount spent on not so popular sports is less. So I think there should be income equality amongst sports and their athletes. I think professional athletes should be paid less as compared to what they are being paid at the current period of time. Instead of spending hefty amounts of dollars on a single athlete the money should be spent for the betterment and opening of sports coaching centers which can be a great opportunity for the upcoming rising stars which is the younger generation to get good coaching and become better athletes. The money can also be used for the development and recreation of the stadiums. The prices of tickets to watch a game can also go down if the players are paid what they deserve to get paid.
Should college athletes receive pay for what they do? You’ve probably seen this pop-up a million times, and thought about it. You’ve probably figured why should they? Aren’t they already receiving benefits from a full-ride scholarship? But then an athlete will get caught up in a scandal like Johnny Manziel, where he signed footballs for money.. then you think well why shouldn’t he receive that money? And you then contradict yourself. But shouldn’t they receive money from outside sources, and then the benefits from the school. Not get a salary from the school just the benefits they’re already receiving, and money from sponsors. Wouldn’t that make sense considering the money they’re making the school? According to an ESPN report Alabama University makes $123,769,841 in total revenue from sports. (College Athletics Revenue) Yes ONE HUNDRED & TWENTY THREE MILLION. Yet an athlete from Alabama can only receive benefits from a scholarship.. That doesn’t seem right. You would want to be payed when the opportunity arises. It should only be fair these players get a piece of the revenue pie, after all they are the ones creating the revenue. The players should be getting benefits to allow them to pay for basic college needs, grow up to be responsible adults, and allow the NCAA to thrive. This would allow for the NCAA to truly thrive as a sporting association.
College athletics is a billion dollar industry and has been for a long time. Due to the increasing ratings of college athletics, this figure will continue to rise. It’s simple: bigger, faster, stronger athletes will generate more money. College Universities generate so much revenue during the year that it is only fair to the players that they get a cut. College athletes should get paid based on the university’s revenue, apparel sales, and lack of spending money.
College athletes generate millions of dollars for their schools each year, yet they are not allowed to be compensated beyond a scholarship due to being considered amateurs. College athletes are some of the hardest working people in the nation, having to focus on both school courses and sports. Because athletics take so much time, these student-athletes are always busy. College football and basketball are multi-billion dollar businesses. The NCAA does not want to pay the athletes beyond scholarships, and it would be tough to work a new compensation program into the NCAA and university budgets. College athletes should be compensated in some form because they put in so much time and effort, generating huge amounts of revenue.
Colleges make a plethora of money off of the sports teams and the players do not see any of that money at all but if they do then their performance would be poor on the field and off the field as well. According to Fred Bowen, “only football and men’s basketball are money-making college sports. Most others, such as field hockey, wrestling and swimming, do not attract big crowds or make big bucks.” (Should college athletes get paid?). Also the sports team that give out the most money for athletes to come and play for them, are football and men’s basketball. “Critics of paying college athletes note that only a small number of them compete in sports or on teams that actually generate revenue. They argue that if players were paid, a handful of exceptional athletes would receive large salaries while most players would receive a pittance, and would probably no longer be offered valuable athletic scholarships” (Paying College Athletes). It is not a surprise to anyone that the main athletes that do want to be paid is football and basketball players. They want to be paid because they bring in all of the money for the school and the...
There has always been a lot of debate on whether or not college athletes should get paid. With as much money as college sports makes from these student athletes, should these student athletes be getting paid? There are many different stances on why I feel like these student athletes should be getting paid. I will talk about some of the reasons on why they should get paid. Being a student athlete is a very stressful thing in life at that age as they are attending school full time and working extremely hard at being the best athlete they can on the field.
Isn't it amazing how one little controversial question can cause so much drama? Take the NCAA for instance. Within recent years the question of weather NCAA athletes should be paid or not has arisen and caused them some unwanted attention. Many coaches and sports enthusiast have been interviewed on their opinion. “Students are not professional athletes who are paid salaries and incentives for a career in sports. They are students receiving access to a college education through their participation in sports, for which they earn scholarships to pay tuition, fees, room and board, and other allowable expenses,” (Mitchell). “There has been major discussion recently if college athletes should or shouldn't be paid while they are in school. The first thing opponents say is, "They're already getting a scholarship! That is more than anybody else! Don't be greedy!”(Hartnett). These are just two men’s opinions, but no one needs to give his or her opinion any longer. The answer to this question is unmistakably clear. NCAA athletes do not need to be paid because they get to go to college for free, their living expenses are paid for, and there would not be a fair way to choose which teams are paid and which are not.
In recent years, a major controversy in the NCAA has been whether or not student athletes in college should be paid for playing sports. There are different viewpoints from different people stating if they should or not. Many people believe that they are already being rewarded enough with their education being paid, but even with the school’s help with their tuition and school fees, many have trouble paying personal expenses. Even though some people believe they shouldn’t be compensated for their hard work and dedication, it is the right thing to do, due to their lack of time occupied by sports and schoolwork. Many famous athletes in college such as Johnny Manziel and Tim Tebow bring in millions of dollars into their universities due to publicity and even though they are breaking their backs they don’t receive a single dime for their hard work. The college coaches also get a really high salary, just for coaching the players. They also receive many contracts that include shoe contracts, TV and radio contracts, and many perks along the way. When the coaches get their teams to the playoffs or win major games, they might receive big bonuses. It doesn’t make sense that the athletes are the ones that are doing all the work to get the far yet they don’t see any form of compensation. Many executives from the NCAA and the universities also get millions of dollars from big sporting events, and they do nothing to earn it. The athletes are the ones taking stuff out of their time and working hard to not get paid.
The same should be said about every job so why is it that players, especially in the NFL, NBA and ABC are paid crazy salaries. There needs to be regulations and caps guiding how much a player can make. This would help insure that all sports remain competitive and everyone has a chance to win. There is no shortage in athletes who want to go pro. Due to the lack of requirements, the work schedule, and the fact that their job is to entertain. There needs to be real change in the sports industry. Lowering athletes’ salaries would only hurt the current players’ lifestyles. The ones up and coming would still have an excellent future if they made even 500,000 dollars a year. Which is still seven times higher than the WNBA is willing to pay their athletes. The WNBA are just as serious of a competitor as other sports, whether it be ice skating, wrestling or football. Therefore it’s time to make sure that every athlete women or male should get paid a fair and justifiable
The controversy of athletes being overpaid dates back to 1922, when well-known baseball player George “Babe” Ruth received $50,000 within the first year of his career. Ruth’s extensive wealth was bolstered by dozens of endorsements (Saperecom). As it is shown in figure 1, in the Fortunate 50 Tiger Woods takes the number one spot for highest paid athlete. Tiger’s salary for 2011 is $2,294,116 and like Babe Ruth, his endorsements exceed his salary earning $60,000,000 making his total $62,294,116 (Freedman). It’s crazy to think that 89 years ago professional athletes scarcely made more than the average person today. This is of course not counting the inflation that has occurred since the years which Babe Ruth played baseball.
there are so many variables that you would have to look at and it becomes very hard to figure out who should be paid, why they should be paid, and how much they should be paid. When looking at whether athletes should be able to make money the wrong thing is often looked at. many people think that college athletes should be paid because NCAA makes money off of them. The NCAA making money pff of its athletes is not something that is very you can prove easily. Although, the case can be made that college athletes should be able to make money off of themselves. In the world of college athletics no college athlete is allowed to generate any sort of profit for themselves. whether its having people pay for autographs, or having a job athletes are not permitted to be paid by anyone. If an athlete could get a job at a local pizza shop, that would appease more of the problems than if the NCAA or universities were to pay the athletes. However, a majority of the people see the problem more as who is not paying the athletes more than the simple fact of the athletes just aren 't being paid by
The NCAA does not pay college football athletes salary already and they should keep it that way. One reason college athletes play is to be recognized by NFL scouts because it is their dream to play professionally. They have risks playing football like injury and many other things, so some people say that the players should be paid salary so they have money to help with living, injury, etc. Some people will argue that they have the opportunity to make to the NFL and they also receive other things from the NCAA, so they should not be paid a salary. Overall the college athletes should not be paid salary to play college football because they receive financial living assistance, they receive free/or assisted pay for education to represent their
In closing, these athletes are making too much money in a society that traditionally bases salaries on the value of ones work. These athletes do not know what real work is or how hard it is to make a dollar. Although their job is difficult, they do not play a role in our economy like their salaries indicate. Therefore, they should receive less money.
Adam Anderson Ms. Zeman English 2 6 April 2017 Rough Draft The National College Athletics Association earns more than a billion dollars a year and does basically nothing with it and nobody know why. They should be paying hard working college athletes. The National College Athletics Association should pay college athletes because players in the NBA are being paid. They’re almost at the pro level, they put in a lot of effort into their games, they are loyal to their team, they play sports instead of having a job so they should get paid for playing like it’s their job, and most of the coaches agree that they should be paid. These college students are almost at the highest level in sports and they still have not been paid.
Coaches are paid millions just for coaching. If they can get paid, then the athletes should too. Not including
“Definition of indentured servant, you work for accommodations and food.” (Arian Foster, Get schooled Netflix documentary). This definition could also describe a college athlete. College athletes have been making the NCAA millions of dollars for decades. All the athletes want is money to help them get by in school, but because we are not paying them they leave for the pros as soon as they can. So now these kids are not getting the education they should, but instead are just trying to make money. College athletes deserve to be paid, if the NCAA is making money from their play. The NCAA is a trap for athletes to make colleges money, colleges don’t care enough for the individual athletes, and these athletes do so much for their colleges. These are just a few of many examples of how the NCAA is deceiving and using these athletes.
