Legalizing Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide Although euthanasia and assisted suicide are frowned upon, legalizing euthanasia and assisted suicide would be beneficial to society. Through many forms of euthanasia and assisted suicide, people choose to end their own lives to relieve their suffering, to keep their autonomy and their desire to be able to perform their daily activities, and to prevent the fear of burdening their family. Even though euthanasia and assisted suicide are not considered the norm by doctors, the goal of a doctor should be to relieve the pain of a patient in any way the patient requests. Death is defined by “the absence of life” (Merriam-Webster). Many people have a different perception on when a person dies. Some people would say death occurs when the heart and other vital organs stop working. Others would say death occurs when one is in a vegetative state of mind (io9.com). From a medical perspective, death is defined as “the irreversible cessation of all vital functions as indicated by the permanent stoppage of the heart, respiration, and brain activity” (Merriam-Webster). Euthanasia is the act of intentionally and directly providing the supplies and causing the death of a patient. It can be called mercy killing or aid-in-dying, as well. Assisted suicide is the act of directly providing the means of death to another person so they can commit suicide. Assisted suicide is also called physician assisted suicide (patientsrightscouncil.com). Euthanasia occurs when a doctor directly ends the life of a patient himself; assisted suicide occurs when the doctor simply provides the needed materials so a person can perform the action themselves. “Euthanasia is used to protect the interests and well being of citiz... ... middle of paper ... ...oth necessary and wanted. “Assuming 2.7% of Americans, like the Dutch, chose assisted suicide and assuming their life would be one month shorter, would save the United States six hundred twenty-seven million dollars “(lifeissues.net). In conclusion, euthanasia and assisted suicide should be legalized world wide. To end suffering, to keep one’s autonomy and their desire to perform daily actions, and to prevent the fear of burdening loved ones are among many reasons people resort to euthanasia or assisted suicide. A doctor is morally obligated to relieve the pain and suffering of a patient, and no one should be forced to suffer for any length of time. Euthanasia and assisted suicide are intimate procedures that only concern the involved parties. People have a right to choose how their life is lived, so they should have the same right to choose how to end their life.
