in high school. I am able to easily navigate through software newly introduced in my institution. I have sometimes been able to help my colleagues fix a computer problem without having to call I.T team in my institution I am also well acquainted with all the software used on a daily basis to provide the best of care for my patients. Discuss barriers (both workplace and personal) that you face in using technology. Some barriers that I have witnessed both at my workplace and personally while using technology are availability of computers, lack of time to properly train staff, lack of support from management and attitudes toward technology used by some staff. There have been some instances where some computers on my unit needed fixed but took a while for it to be fixed. I don’t think staff is properly trained to use some of the new and updated software. Most at times an email is sent regarding the new update but the need for hands on training is forgotten. I also don’t see enough of management’s involvement with the use of technology on my unit. Discuss some strategies you can implement to overcome these barriers. I do think the I.T team should train at least a staff on my unit who will be a great resource in times of need since it does take a while for them to come up sometimes us really them. Staff should also be properly trained by actually incorporating hands on training rather than an email or a print out of information regarding any use of technology or even updated software. Management should priorities technology as one of their education sessions for staff as continuing education for technology usage is lacking on my unit. Identify a personal short term and long term goal regarding your use and or knowledge of technology in your area of practice. How will you achieve and plan for it? My short term goal right now is to be well acquainted with a new technology that has been introduced to the unit as a communication tool between nurses and other professionals.
The software is currently on several Ipads and can also be accessed via a regular laptop or a desktop computer. My long term goal is to utilize this new software very frequently as it serves a snap shot of patients background , information on any updates, critical issues during the shift and any other important information staff would need at a glance is readily available. This software is only specific to my unit, hence apart from documenting in the regular organizations EPIC software I have to consistently update information on my patients in this new software being utilized on my unit. I will be able to achieve this if I make it a habit of utilizing it on a daily
basis. Technological changes are inevitable. Discuss how you can adapt throughout your career to enhance patient safety. Technological changes in this 21st century are truly unavoidable because today’s world runs on technology. Throughout my career I will adapt by embracing any new idea or change that technology brings. I will also be an advocate for change if any technological advancement does not enhance patient safety.
According to Weis/Tappen (2010) competency is defined as “the demonstrated ability to carry out specific tasks or activities with reasonable skill and safety that adheres to the prevailing standard of practice in the nursing community” (p. 262). To be competent a person should be able to perform a set skill at an expected level. Pertaining to nursing, competence is shown by skill provided in healthcare with safety and understanding of how it is to be performed. The nurse is responsible for continuing competency throughout his/her career in order to meet the performance level set by the healthcare facility they are employed by.
Working as a professional registered nurse in the hospital, I realized how nurses struggle to find balance between devoting the time charting on the computer and spending time taking care of the patients. Moreover, I’ve seen nurses where they get discouraged trying to find this balance between patients and charting. As a bedside nurse, I would love nothing, but to tend to the needs of my patients. The length of time consume on electronic charting all day, take the very essence of bedside nursing away from nurses, which is caring. Reducing the time of nurses being occupied on charting by eliminating redundant tasks while conforming to their standard, are the changes I would like to make. These are a few of the reasons why I wanted to pursue a degree in informatics. Technology can have a profound effect on a company. The manner in which it is introduced and the presentation to the employees can ultimately predict the success of the project. As the world evolves into a more technical society companies have to be willing to compete with the changes in order to survive. The changes have to be implemented and managed to effectively prepare the company’s workforce. Management has to know the trends and make the necessary technology changes to keep the company competitive. Preparation and planning is key to the implementation of new technology. It is hard to say which one is affected more by technology because they all are in their own individual ways.
