As many people know, our district has an after school program called ASES. The ASES coaches at Newton are always planning events for us, however, often times, there are students involved in the planning procedure. One of these students is me. I helped plan our Winter ASES Dance and last year’s HH Festival. We are also currently planning on having a color run event. Not only do I help out in normal school activities, I am also the “secretary” of my Chinese class. I help out my teacher by sending an email to all my classmates every week. The email entails upcoming events, reminders such as upcoming test, and the homework for that week.

Like many other people, I play piano. I have been playing piano since I was 4 years old. Up until about 2 years ago, I have never wanted to try talking the piano test. In 6th grade, I decided that I wanted to challenge myself and take the test. I studied and prepared for the level 5 ABRSM piano test, and I passed. However, in 5th grade, I decided that I not only wanted to play piano, but I also wanted to play flute. Now, I am the first chair in the Newton Middle School Advanced Band, which, with the directing of Mr. Rick Tyree, has scored a Superior rating 10 years in a row at the SCSBOA

Since I am only in middle school, I am not given many opportunities to help out our society. However, last I was lucky enough to be given the chance to help out our community. For our GATE project last year, we were challenged to come up with a possible and realistic solution or way to contribute to a major cause in our everyday society. For our project, my group and I selected homelessness as a major conflict. I partnered with the ASES Heroes program to organize an event that was designed to help out with the problem of homelessness. Although homelessness is not a problem we can directly address and solve, we as people who are doing better than those who live on the streets, can contribute to them and help by donating to the Salvation Army or just donate old clothing. That’s exactly what we did. Through the festival, we held a donation drive and encouraged Newton ASES students and families to donate used clothing and canned foods. Our amazing head coach, Jose Jimenez offered 4 Dodger tickets to the family that donated the most cans. In the end, all cans and clothing articles were donated to the Salvation Army. Not only am I in the band, but I am an essential component to the success and well-being of my section. The clarinets never sounded better than when they were under the direction of Section Leader Sarah, whom they all loved and adored. Okay, that's a boldfaced lie. I sat across from Helen and watched as she got her packet while I got a single piece of paper. It only took one page to say “I’m sorry, but your writing was not selected.” Helen’s packet took multiple pages to reminder her parents to sign their permission for the publishing of her essay. Helen’s story got in and mind didn’t. In retrospect, mine didn’t deserve to get in. Why? In an overzealous state to write an epic, I took what was originally 2 pages and turned it into six pages of unnecessary details, overcomplicated world structure, and random vocabulary in a classic freshman attempt to sound intelligent. It didn’t work.
It is a tremendous honor to be considered for membership in the most prestigious Honor Society available at Wapato High School. It is even more grand to be able to work towards enrollment in the Society side by side with such an astoundingly gifted group of young men and women. My biggest improvement in this English 111 class was my writing. Writing tasks that were assigned greatly strengthened my overall performance throughout the course, preparing me for the future classes. Music has always been one of things I excelled in. In elementary school it was required to be in music but second in 5th grade you have the option to be in band. I was in band for 6 years before I stopped and I went to 5 honor bands. I played tenor saxophone and was 2nd chair all six years. Jazz band was something we had in middle school and high school. We had 2 jazz bands in middle school. Jazz one was for 8th graders and jazz two was 7th grade. I played in both. My first year I played tenor 1 and 2 and the second year I played baritone saxophone. My 9th grade year I played only tenor one. We didn’t have to audition but the students who plays that instrument normally would have first say in who gets 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd part. That

To me, extracurricular activities are not just clubs that I participate in to make my college application look more “full” and “impressive.” I participate in them because I enjoy being a part of them. An extracurricular that I am very passionate about is band. While I have played the piano since I was five, I wanted to be a part of a group of people that share the same passion for music as I do. Band has two seasons, marching and concert season, and I am a section leader for both of them. During marching season I am in charge of teaching the freshmen how to march, teaching them how to play their instrument, and teaching them the basics of marching season and what to expect. I am present at all of the auditions, camps, and practices, and I help anyone that is in need of it. Since I am in percussion, we have auditions to see what instrument we will be on during marching season. I chose to stay on my instrument from last year to improve on my technique and playing, as well as to help the incoming freshmen that will be new to the instrument. Since I am the front ensemble (a part of the percussion section) section leader, I assigned the music, I moved all of the instruments outside (along with the help of fellow percussionists), and I lead practices for my section. As a student, I am an active participant in my academic and extracurricular activities. My first priority has always been to make good grades and learn in school. Although this is important to me, I also know that by participating in clubs, sports, and after school activities, I will become a well-rounded student. During the past years of my high school career I have participated and received awards in the following: Cheerleading (eight years), twice as captain, '97 -'98 Varsity Letter in Cheerleading, '98 AIM scholar, Who's Who Among American Cheerleaders, and '98 Academic Excellence Award while participating in Virginia High School League Interscholastic Activities. However I did not have a big problem being in that class, the only issue was there were no instrument like a keyboard piano. The instrument that I picked was the brass flute since it looked easy to learn. As I continued to practice playing the flute in my Beginning Band class and rehearse after school, I mastered to which keys to press and how to blow properly in the riser. To be able to play at a slow tempo, regular tempo, and swift tempo. As matter of fact, I also learned to work well and play all together with my classmates and my flute partner, Robbie Lee. From being in this class, My Beginning Band has taught me skills of playing an instrument besides a keyboard piano and gave me more knowledge about music.
