For those who have not taken the time to read a selection of men’s magazines they may associate them with pornography or sport. Since the mid-90s, a crop of very successful magazines aimed at young men has emerged, spearheaded by the controversial Loaded. It is important for me to establish early on in this essay that men’s magazines such as loaded and FHM, are general lifestyle magazines; the modern men's magazine is about sports and cars as well as sex, fashion, women, and humour. This essay will consider whether the sexual nature of these magazines is insulting and tasteless. One must bear in mind that taste depends on the individual; it is a personal judgement. What some people find in good humour others may find vulgar. As the notion of what is acceptable in our society varies over time so clearly it varies from one person to another.
Men’s magazines, such as Loaded and FHM, could be looked at as offensive to both men and women as they reinforce stereotypical images of macho men and sexist attitudes to there readers. Feminist, Robin Morgan made some very bold statements when she wrote about pornography, she said that it encouraged sexual violence and rape against women: “Pornography is the theory, rape is the practice” She refers to pornography as humiliating women “Women are hurt and economically and sexually exploited in the production of pornography.” (1)
Yet isn’t it a brazen statement to refer to these magazines as pornography? David Gauntlett argues:
“Men’s magazines are purely for entertainment, they are not seriously on a crusade to return to a pre feminist ideal or harm anyone in an attempt to provide entertainment.” (2)
This is a common opinion where most readers are concerned. I feel there is an important difference where sexist attitudes come into play, between lifestyle magazines and magazines such as Top Gear or other car magazines which have half naked females draped across the body, for no apparent reason – as she isn’t an accessory to the car!
Lifestyle magazines generally do portray women in a sexual way; they conjure up a shallow and unrealistic view. Some argue that the emergence of such magazines is an attempt to regain male dominance. Lacey suggests that it is the diminishing of men's power that has resulted in publications like FHM and Loaded, he says that the celebration of 'laddishness' is a desperate attempt to grasp what is left of traditional male identity.
Breazeale explains, “It had to be unequivocally clear that women were the natural objects of its readership’s desire” (75). In the eyes of Esquire Magazine’s audience, it was just as bad to be a woman as it was to be a homosexual person, so Esquire’s founders had to ensure that their would be no doubt in their readers’ minds that this magazine was created for straight males only. Esquire’s use of erotic imagery of women promoted women as nothing but objects; while half of the magazine insulted women on their tastes, the other half portrayed them in inappropriate, sexual ways solely for men to look at. Esquire Magazine even used inappropriate cartoons and voyeurism as a way to assert the male dominance. Esquire would run articles of women naked in the restroom surprised by construction workers, burglars, or firefighters, or there was an accidental loss of clothes on the street; whatever the situation, all featured a woman in surprise and a male initiating a look that the female does not necessarily want (78).
Hitchcock has characteristics as an auteur that is apparent in most of his films, as well as this one.
Before men’s magazines become a part of popular culture this realm was dedicated to the female consumer, but in 1933 Esquire set out to change that stereotype. Kenon Breazeale’s purpose in writing ‘In Spire of Women’ is to make people understand that men’s magazines, specifically Esquire promote a sexualized image of women solely for a man’s satisfaction. In doing so Brezeale argues that Esquire contributed to the growth of the male consumer by making women an object of the male fetish that serves as only an annoyance to society. Breazeale is able to argue that Esquire is a rejection to the power of femininity by explaining how Esquire adapts to a consumer-based culture where it emphasizes the difference between masculinity and femininity
All directors of major motion pictures have specific styles or signatures that they add in their work. Alfred Hitchcock, one of the greatest directors of all time, has a particularly unique style in the way he creates his films. Film analyzers classify his distinctive style as the “Alfred Hitchcock signature”. Hitchcock’s signatures vary from his cameo appearances to his portrayal of a specific character. Two perfect examples of how Hitchcock implements his infamous “signatures” are in the movies, A Shadow of a Doubt and Vertigo. Growing old while staying young takes many years of complete and internal happiness not many years of collagen injections and the added stress of having to stay unattainably perfect. While some consider these journalists for women's magazines talented writers, I consider them horrendous displays of talent in which they sell out the naturally beautiful women of the world for a quick buck and a popular magazine.
Firminger examines the ways these magazines represent young males and females. With amazing violence and suggestive sexual content, the movie crossed some censorship lines. Arguably Hitchcock’s largest hit, still lives in current media today.

According to the American Institute of Stress, stress can be defined as an individual’s response, physical, mental or emotional, to an event that causes a demand for change (Selye, 1936). For athletes, that demand for change can be caused by an injury, which ultimately can have a significant impact on overall stress levels. While a physical injury can cause psychological stress, mental trauma can similarly affect an athlete physically. An athlete’s psychological stability has a great affect on an athlete’s susceptibility to pain and can alter the response to and recovery from an injury (Ahern, 1997).
Passion can be a driving force and anybody’s life. For athletes there is have a passion to push themselves to the highest level in order to excel at whatever their given sport may be. However, sometimes this passion can be both beneficial and destructive. While the passion can allow the athlete to excel at the sport, if that athlete becomes injured that passion can cause the athlete to return to play too early. Returning to play too early can be harmful to the athlete whether it be immediately or years down the road. An athlete should not be returned back play until adequate healing and recovery has taken place and the athlete can return to playing sports at a pre-injury level. However this cannot always take place because the of the mindset of the athlete.
