Assemblymembers have several duties as a legislator including representing their district, addressing local issues, and introducing legislation. Aside from those duties, they also need to make sure they are still being connected to their district in the media and being well-represented throughout the district. Assemblymember James Skoufis represents Assembly District 99, which includes Orange County and a part of Rockland County. He has represented District 99 since 2013, being one of the youngest legislators to this day. Assembly District 99 does not have a majority party when it comes to registered voters. The district is divided into thirds, one-third democratic, one-third republican, and one-third independent. However, when it comes to voting, District 99 is partisan. Sixty to seventy percent of registered democrats will vote democrat and the same goes for the registered …show more content…
republican voters. This leaves thirty to forty percent of voters to cross-over to either party. Aside from the democratic and republican party, the number of registered independents is significant and over the years has grown. Throughout the district, the party vote is not stable. In 2012, Obama won in District 99 by one percent. In 2016, Trump won by eleven percent and Assemblymember Skoufis won his general election six percent. Assemblymember Skoufis primarily depends on the general election and has not had a primary election before. When it comes to the general election, the electorate vote generally votes the party-line. It is not enough to simply rely on straight ticket voting. Therefore, the crossover voters are needed for Assemblymember Skoufis to win an election. Just like any politician Assemblymember Skoufis relies on and uses media to help his constituents aware of what he is doing for the District. Throughout District 99, there are various forms of media outlets. In both Orange and Rockland Counties, they have a daily newspaper and all the towns have a weekly newspaper. When it comes to local news there are 2 local news stations. Time Warner Cable and News12 cover the news throughout the district Assemblymember Skoufis represents. These media outlets tend to generally cover what Assemblymember Skoufis is promoting for and doing for the district. He gets a wide range of coverage of all the media outlets, especially the news. Based on a polling done, Assemblymember Skoufis is recognized by three/fourths of the district with a mostly positive view. The media outlets have a positive overlook on what Assemblymember Skoufis has done and plans on doing to help his constituents. In this century, everyone relies on social media to express themselves and aware other people what is going on in the world, state, county, and town.
However, Assemblymembers need to reach out to all ages when it comes to letting them know what is going on in their District. Aside from social media platforms, Assemblymember Skoufis uses robocalls and email blasts to notify his constituents about actions he has taken for the district and/or state. When it comes to the frequency Assemblymember Skoufis covers media outlets, it depends on the media. Email newsletters are sent out a few times a year and this year Assemblymember Skoufis was on 3 radio shows. When it comes to meeting with constituents, he is always trying his best to attend local events in the district. His Albany office becomes busy once session starts with local organizations wanting to come in to greet him and tell them about their main concerns. Assemblymember Skoufis is a great listener and believes that their job as legislators is to address the concerns of constituents because that is why they were elected as
legislators. When it comes to Internet coverage, Assemblymember Skoufis does not primarily depend on it. Throughout the district, there are one to two online blogs, the traditional newspaper is online and there is a local newspaper in the Town of Cornwall. Social media outreach is dependent on extensively because that is what most people are using now to get their information. Assemblymember Skoufis relies mostly on Facebook to communicate with the public compared to Twitter and other social media platforms. Every Assemblymember is different on how they reach out to their constituents because not only is each district different and the member themselves. They have to make sure their district knows who they are so they can come to them for their problems. Assemblymembers try their best to become a public figure that their constituents are able to rely on to do the best possible job in not only improving their district but the state too. Every district is made up of different political parties, which can make an Assemblymember focus on certain concerns over others. As much as they need to have a good public profile, the perspective their district is essential in their position as an Assemblymember.
The first activity that was presented by Mayhew is due to the tremendous advertising that the members undertake. Through advertising, a congressman is able to build a favorable reputation for himself which will then attract voters. Although the incumbent’s image can have “little or no issue content,” it is still important to gain credibility from the voters so reelection of the specific incumbent can be achieved. Different ways that congressman advertise are through frequent visits to their district, mailings or letters sent to homes, and “nonpolitical speeches to home audiences.” With

In his article, “Homestyle,” Richard Fenno seeks to answer one question: How does an elected representative's view of his/her district affect his or her political behavior? To answer this question, Fenno identifies what a Member of Congress’s
A Democratic Party long ruled by moderates and conservatives succeeded in stunting what seemed like the natural growth of a successful Republican Party until the 1990s. Since then, various forces have contributed to the growth of the Republicans, and in the end, to an altering of the core membership of each party. Most recently, the state has seen the development of a dominant Republican Party that doesn't yet hold quite the dominion the Democrats enjoyed through most of the twentieth century. The Republican Party has certainly benefited from the defection of former Democrats, the arrival of Republicans and independents from out of state, and organizational difficulties in the Democratic Party. Thus, Republican officials dominate state government, and Democrats find themselves reduced, for the present, to the status of an embattled minority party seeking to recreate themselves among their voting and financial constituencies. This is showing that the newfound Republican dominance can be the beginning of a new strong party system, or if we are in a state of transition in which the terms of political competition are still in change. If it is a new party system, I don’t think it will be very durable or last too long for that matter. Now, it seems that Republican dominance of state government will
For Mission One of The Redistricting Game, I was the State of Jefferson’s redistricting consultant and chose to work for the Democratic Party. My mission was to establish population equality by making sure that each district in the state has virtually the same number of people between 640,000 to 650,000. The virtual State of Jefferson has four district Representatives. Rep. Tyree Hugger, Rep. Emma Powerment, Rep. Manny Pulative, and Rep. Celia Coen-Valley representing Districts 1...

West Virginia’s voting for state and Congressional representatives have been overwhelmingly democratic since the 1960’s. For example, the late, great Robert C. Byrd was a democratic US Senator from 1959 to 2010. His efforts to bring pork barrel spending and ear marks to benefit his represented citizens was the understood methodology of his incumbency. The West Virginia House of Delegates is current 54 to 46, with Democrats being the majority party. Twenty-eight Democrats and six Republicans (WV Constitution) fulfill the 34 seats in the Senate. The federal representatives of the House and Senate are similar, with incumbent Democrats Jay Rockefeller, and Joe Manchin, as well as two Republican, and one Democratic representative in the House. For my local region of West Virginia, Shelley Moore Capi...
With any decision, both parties (republican and democratic) campaign over the state to gain support from voters to increase their chances of being elected to the office that they desire. When voting most voters arrive at polling stations to vote, first for instance, they can be given a paper ballot on which they will select their choices and which later will be checked by hand; second they can be given a paper ballot on which they will select their choices with the assistance of a voting machine; or thirdly they can be given a sheet of paper with a numerical access code. Texans share a lot of the same essential needs of voting and nonvoting as other Americans. The republican party remains undefeated after a decade that saw fights over legislature redistricting, bitter and commonly intense campaigning around both inside and between the parties, continuously expensive battling up and down the ballot. In 2002, Republican competitors cleared all statewide races and took control of both houses of the Texas legislature, viably assuming the organizations of powers. The resulting year the legislative gathering returned to the distribution of districts for the U.S. House of Representatives the accomplishment of that offensive is seen inside the progressive changes in the delegations that are represented in the features of The Texas Delegation to the united states House of Representatives.
The single-member district election system is the most common and best-known electoral system currently in use in America. It is used to elect the U.S. House Representatives, as well as many state and local legislatures. Under single member district systems, an area is divided into a number of geographically defined voting districts, each represented by a single elected official. Voters can only vote for their district’s representative, with the individual receiving the most votes winning election. This method of electing representatives is better than any alternative solution in various ways. Four compelling reasons to support the single-member district election system include the fact that single-member districts give each voter a single, easily identifiable district member; the way single-member district voting helps protect against overreaching party influence; that single-member districts ensure geographic representation; and finally, that single-member districts are the best way to maximize representatives’ accountability.
Many states consider “communities of interest” when drawing their districts. These groups may have similar legislative interests as well, and that means they can benefit from common representation in the government. But I feel this can be an advantage and disadvantage at the same time because that interest could be what the party is about or what they are trying to stop. But still giving the communities a chance to asks questions and give input should be highly considered since they are what make up the districts. The outcome of who wins may not be what everyone voted for but giving the voters the feeling that they matter is what’s important.
The National Assembly is the lower house of parliament. Members are known as deputies. 577 Deputies form National Assembly, each of them elected for a five year term by a two-way voting system. The National Assembly symbolically embodies the general will of the French people, its main role is to discuss, amend and vote on bills. The National Assembly has a President who is elected for a five year period. The President makes sure the procedures a...
Every legislative session involves a number of different cycles; some occur with each session while others occur due to specific events. In the case of the 2018 legislative session, one of the most crucial cyclical components was the upcoming elections for the House as well as Governor. Upcoming elections alter the ways in which legislators behave, largely influencing the kinds of bills that leadership introduce to the floor along with how they vote. One of the more interesting manifestations of this is in the form of bills introduced that have slim to no chance of becoming law, but are used for campaigning purposes and mailers in particular–they are a type of “dogs don’t hunt” bill.
This poem is about a 'normal', 'average' man who came to the trenches only 3 hours before, and then is killed as he is doing his job of piling sandbags along the parapet.Throughout this poem, Sassoon appeals to the emotions of the reader by trying to create an emotional attachment between the reader and the young man. He explains that "He was a young man, with a meagre wifeAnd two small children in a Midland town;He showed their photographs to all his mates,And they considered him a decent chapWho did his work and hadn't much to say,And always laughed at other people's jokesBecause he hadn't any of his own."Sassoon deliberately describes the man clearly and significant detail, which makes the reader realise that this man was just a normal man, probably not unlike the reader, and makes the reader see the pure tragedy when the man dies. "He was just a simple man, who never did anything to hurt anyone" is the response Sassoon wants the reader to have, and feel the injustice of the man's death.Sassoon specifically starts the poem off slowly, describing the men slowly making their way down the trenches, slipping into the mud and squeezing past other soldiers returning from the front line. Then, he ironically rushes the man's death in the last two lines, after the man is thinking how slow time passes.
The Senate seats are divided into three districts containing three seats each from Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. The Senate seats are divided into two classes that are similar to the classes of the United States Senate. One class consisting of a single Senator from each district, and the second class consisting of two Senators from...
