On a cool winter's night, a large cloud slowly drifts past the looming moon, creating an ash-grey sky that sets off an eerie mood. A father sits in his car patiently awaiting for his daughter to bring out 200 dollars that could save him from a little financial mishap, but doesn’t. She quietly sits by a nearby window and waits for him to leave. In the short story “Ashes” by Susan Beth Pfeffer, the main character Ashleigh lives with her divorced mother and frequently sees her father on Mondays and Wednesdays, during the story Ashleigh's dad mensions a financial problems and wants Ashleigh to barrow “steel” 200 dollars from her mother's savings and give it to her father whose fate lies with in the money to pull him out of financial trouble. did not take the money because her mom is a good role model, her mom is to pratical, and her mom would be disappointed. Ashleigh did not take the money because her mother is a good role model. “Mom who was still working on completing her degree, took Tuesday and Thursday evening classes” (Pfeffer, 1). Since Ashleigh’s mom is setting a good example unlike her father who doesn’t work hard to achieve the goal of completing a degree or provide much for her why would Ashleigh help him out. “And mom was always prepared.” (Pfeffer, 1). If Ashleigh’s mom is always prepared wouldn’t she be aware for when someone stole her money. “I know, always putting aside for a rainy day.” (Pfeffer, 1). Would Ashleigh’s mom have a plan set aside if someone stole her money. Ashleigh could not have stole the money from her mom because her mother is a good role model. Next Ashleigh did not take the money from her mom because her mom is to practical. “She’s the most practical person I know” (Pfeffer, 1).
If Ashleigh were to take the money, her mom could have easily found out because she is practical, and always is prepared for when something doesn’t work out or go exactly as planned. “She takes a grim sort of pleasure being ready for them.” (Pfeffer, 1). Ashleigh’s mom is probably prepared for when someone were to take her money because she’s to practical to not be prepared. “The flashlight with working batteries for a black out. The extra quarters when the laundry isn’t quite dry.” (Pfeffer, 1). Ashleigh’s mom could easily find out about the lost money because she always has a plan B so to speak, she is always prepared for the worst. Ashleigh couldn’t have taken the money because her mother is to practical. Lastly, Ashleigh did not take the money from her mom because her mom would be disappointed. “He’s an irresponsible bum” was her way of putting it.” (Pfeffer, 1). Ashleigh's mother would be disappointed in her if she had taken the savings money and gave it to her father to help him with financial problems. “I knew he was both.” (Pfeffer, 1). If Ashleigh agrees with her mom about her father why would she steal for him. “I’m a dreamer,” he said more than once, which really wasn’t all that different
from what Mom said.” (Pfeffer, 1). Ashleigh’s father doesn’t seem to do any hard work and only seems to get through life on willingness. Ashleigh could not have taken the money and gave it to her father because, Ashleigh's mom would be disappointed in her if she did. Because Ashleigh’s mom is a good role model, worked for the money, and her mom would be disappointed Ashleigh did not take the money. Although Ashleigh’s relationship with her father is more strong she feels if she were to take the money from her mother's savings she would be letting her down. As the large cloud drifts far into the distance, and the moon pears down on the silent earth the car that was once resting on the street has sped off in another direction down a dark road.

In the book “The Triangle Fire: A Brief History with Documents” by Jo Ann E. Argersinger. In a short summary this book talks about the tragic factory fire that took lives of 146 workers in New York City, March 25, 1911. The tragedy happened during the great uprising of a women revolution, of many young females going to work to support their families. During this period many women wanted to be treated and work like how men worked. Having equal rights at jobs that were a risk to them, nothing stopped the uprising, until the fire became a change. Both sympathy and rage among all sectors of the American public got up to fight for a change. Argersinger examines in the context, trajectory, and impact of this Progressive Era event. During the Progressive Era, many big changes were being
In the novel “One Foot in Eden” the character Widow Glendower represents both the catastrophic and supernatural nature of human personality. Ron Rash achieves this by combining deep knowledge of the world, devoutness and antagonism of one being. At the beginning of this novel an event takes place with a person who is viewed as a local villain vanishes in the forests. The manipulation of the witch starts it all.

“The Cold Embrace” by Mary E. Braddon is a wonderfully tragic short story of a young man’s denial and guilt till the end of his life. Braddon accomplishes this by using Omniscient narration to not only showing us his guilt, denial, and struggle; but also able to present his spiral into a depression filled with delusions and guilt that eventually lead him to lose his mind and perish from outside a first person perspective.
In Junot Diaz’s essay “The Money” he explains where his family stands economically. Stating that his father was regularly being fired from his forklifting jobs and his mother 's only job was to care for him and his four siblings. With the money brought home by his father, his mom would save some. Her reason was to raise enough to send to her parents back in the Dominican Republic. When his family went on a vacation, they came back to an unpleasant surprise; their house had been broke into. Eventually Diaz was able to get back their money and belongings. Diaz returned the money to his mother although she didn’t thank him for it, this disappointed him. Like Diaz I have also encountered a similar situation where I was disappointed. When I was in second grade, my life life took a completely different turn. My dad took an unexpected trip to Guatemala, on his return, the outcome was not what I expected.
Ultimately, the children lacked security all of their childhood and were still able to get out of poverty and be successful for once in their lives. This story is a perfect example that people that are brought up in poverty can get themselves out and live a healthy life style. Security would have shielded the children from traumatizing events such as Jeannette getting raped by Billy Deel and Brian getting molested by Erma. Mom and Dad handled their economic situation poorly because they could have started their life from scratch again with one million dollars, but instead chose to live off the land and on the streets.
In life we go through very hard times that’s just how life circles, but do these problems really help shape your spirit to who you are today and who you will be one day in the future? In the book Copper Sun by Sharon Draper Amari overcomes some of the most complicated problems in the history of the U.S., in which I personally don’t think I would have been able to handle as swiftly and fast as Amari had. With the help of others Amari was able to create a strong backbone to carry her thought out the way and support her in her worst times. Although some of these influences weren’t always the best people such as Clay, he helped shape Amaris future and the theme of the story. Finally, how important where the minor characters on helping to shape the main character’s spirit and inner mind, and after that transaction how where they able to slowly develop the theme/message of the book?

The dishonesty that Allie 's mother conducted when hiding the letters that Noah had mailed to Allie, displayed what Hutchison (2015), describes as conflict perspective. Allie’s mother felt she was doing the right thing with hiding the letters, she felt her daughter deserved more than a common life and that Noah could only supply that lifestyle. She felt if she did not hide the letters her daughter would make the wrong choices and could possibly affect her life forever.
