Texas legislative recently passed a bill called House Bill 5. This causes all 8th grade Texas students and everyone below to choose an endorsement for high school. These endorsements help determine what classes to take, what college courses to prepare for, and what career you want to pursue. Our group was assigned Arts and Humanities and we researched careers such as art, music, theatre, and dance. You must have 26 credits in order to graduate while completing all other core and elective classes. This helps you plan your future and encourages you to start thinking about your future before starting to create your own life.
The first two careers we researched were art and theatre. Both of these careers do not require certain degrees to get a job but they sometimes require special classes. In art you can take different types of technique classes in order to help your figure drawing and hand movements. You could take 3D design as a career while studying different courses also. In theatre, you take improve or other classes if your debating on just going into theatre shows (example Broadway). If you want to go into the entertainment industry, you could take movie acting classes or even improve too. This new house bill allows students to get ready and prepared for these certain exciting career choices.
For art you must take four social studies or economic courses, four levels of the same language other than English, and four levels American Sign Language. You must also take a coherent sequence of four credits from one or two categories of fine Arts. You must start at your freshman year, which guides the student through a path of academic study.

Arts and humanities is a good field that you should take that won’t take that much work, these are some examples of the high school courses that you would have to take and gives you an idea of what you would need to know for these professions. All these things will help you to get these profession and get you above and beyond. This project taught us a lot too. Things that I didn’t know that you need to take or or do to in the field of arts and humanities. We are all glad that we got chosen to do the study of arts and humanities to see what you have to do in high school or in college or what classes you could take to help you get better at the things in this field.

Shiffman believes that the drop in interest in the humanities results in the inability of students to have clear bearings amid life’s uncertainties. He believes that only by studying the humanities will students be able to introspect and recognize that endless achievement may not add up to a meaningful life (Shiffman 5). However, Shiffman fails to realize that this form of reflection need not be done solely by those majoring in the humanities. It can be done by all who try, their fields of study are no limitation. In fact, it may be this same reflection that leads to an individual’s decision to prioritize practicality. Not all those who choose the practical path are doing it for themselves. Many may do it for their families, as a safe and stable means of supporting their loved ones. Others may take this opportunity to give back to their community through the ways they are most skilled. Instead of pursuing a single interest in a certain field, they choose to follow their various callings. Doing solely what an individual loves is a self-centered view of the world. While it is important to chase happiness, it is also important to reflect on what one is doing to spread happiness to the rest of the world. One must find something that they are good at, and put that into the world. They should contribute to others and help the world be better, in addition to following their passions. An individual’s acts of service may just become one of their many passions.

Throughout our lives we experience “Ah-ha! Moments” that can be small such as figuring out a math problem to big moments where you find out what career you want to do. The “Ah-ha! Going into this Humanities class, I had no idea what I was getting into. I didn’t know what the Humanities were and how it would impact my education at all. I had taken a number of history classes in high school and in college before and expected the Humanities to flow with my history classes in a sense. “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost is one of my favorite poems for many reasons, but recently it has started to gain new meaning as I face graduation. I have started to wonder how different my life would be if I had only chosen to travel down one road instead of sprinting down both roads at the same time. When I declared my biology major, my dad expressed concern that I was choosing one possible life and career over another possibility. He said he knew how happy writing made me and he wondered if I was doing the right thing in not pursuing that. He spoke the words I had not yet spoken out loud for myself. “You shouldn’t enter college worried about what you will do when you exit,” said David Rubenstein, co-founder of the Carlyle Group, at a World Economic Forum panel discussion last week on the state of the humanities. Rubenstein’s words are true now and they were true then: I should not have worried about choosing so soon. After I arrived at Columbia College, I began taking English courses because I could not take biology courses without at least trying to explore my passion for literature and creative writing. Thanks to time at Columbia College, I started to see the value the required courses of the WPDM major more because of what they taught me about myself than what they taught me about the subject matter. Combined with my classes, my internship experiences have confirmed that I am indeed heading in the right direction. Art integration has shown that it helps with creating ideas, thinking with a new mind set, and process new challenges that they will face as they grow and see things that they have not seen yet. Many people believe that art integrated with the other subjects would not help students I disagree with that, art can help with many subjects and help students understand them.
“Don’t do that. You’ll never get a job.” Such was the response of one of my favorite teachers to the interest that I had voiced in history as a potential field of study. A teacher whose class a friend and I had enjoyed so much we had taken time out of a weekday afternoon to come visit her. Sure, my response contrasted pretty acutely with that of my friend who wanted to pursue a career in computational linguistics, but history is my genuine interest. In an environment that constantly peddles science and technology careers, it’s hard to love history and literature.
