Artificial Intelligence What if I told you that robots could be taking over the world at any moment now? Well, maybe not that soon, but sooner than you think, because Artificial Intelligence is always advancing. When you think of Artificial Intelligence, you probably think of movies like Star Wars or Terminator, but it’s actually very real and we use it every day. Artificial intelligence, or AI for short, is a machine’s ability to think and act like a human. It’s the brain inside a robot, but not the robot itself. Humans, and animals, have what we call natural intelligence, or NI. The main difference between NI and AI is Natural Intelligence’s main goal is to survive and adapt to their environment. Artificial Intelligence’s main goal …show more content…
The first branch is ANI, or Artificial Narrow Intelligence. Examples of ANI could be any ai system that is below human level intelligence. Google Maps is a good example of ANI because it specializes in one thing only; it can give you directions to places, but can’t do much else. The second branch is called AGI, or Artificial General Intelligence. AGI is about the same as human level intelligence. An example of AGI would be an AI system named Nigel, invented by Kimera, a company focused on improving AGI. Nigel was programmed, not to already know things, but to learn things like humans do. Nigel learns through a constantly growing network of changing directions that can lead to any connected device. The more people that Nigel learns from, Nigel’s process of learning accelerates, taking him a step closer to ASI. Artificial Super Intelligence is the third branch of Artificial Intelligence. ASI is higher than human level intelligence. ASI is yet to be achieved because AGI hasn’t advanced far enough yet. Although, it will be much easier to go from AGI to ASI than it was to go from ANI to …show more content…
The law states that fundamental measures of information technology follow predictable and exponential trajectories, which basically means that the main measures of computers follow predictable and expanding paths. So, this means that the more AGI learns, the faster it learns. Imagine you are in the year 2000. The internet is starting out through dial-up, people are starting to hear about “Google”, and the first IPhone hasn’t even been released yet.
Now, imagine that you somehow knew how to time travel back thirty years and brought someone from the year 1970 with you back into 2000. You show this person from the 70’s all of the new technological inventions that exist in 2000, like CD’s and Cell Phones and Video Games, and they are obviously amazed, because for someone in the 1970’s life is so completely different that they wouldn’t even think about some of the things existing.
Then, imagine taking someone from 2000 forwards into half that time; Just 15 years into 2015. You would show them all the possibilities of smartphones and smart watches, the availability of 3D printers, and accurate GPS systems. They’d be even more impressed than the person from the 70’s
Imagine a world where you couldn’t connect to your family and friends immediately through a phone call or text message, but instead had to send them a letter that could take weeks, or even months, until they received it. Imagine a world where if you needed to look something up, you had to walk to the library and look it up in a book, instead of going onto the internet. Imagine a world with no televisions, and only radios. Imagine a world where only the rich had cars, and everyone else had to walk everywhere. This is what life was like in the 1900’s, and why I believe that technology is the greatest advancement since then.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the newest fields in Science and Engineering. Work started in earnest soon after World War II, and the name itself was coined in 1956 by John McCarthy. Artificial Intelligence is an art of creating machines that perform functions that require intelligence when performed by people [Kurzweil, 1990]. It encompasses a huge variety of subfields, ranging from general (learning and perception) to the specific, such as playing chess, proving mathematical theorems, writing poetry, driving a car on the crowded street, and diagnosing diseases. Artificial Intelligence is relevant to any intellectual task; it is truly a Universal field. In future, intelligent machines will replace or enhance human’s capabilities in
Artificial Intelligence is “the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior.” Although the term was coined in 1955 by John McCarthy, stories about artificial beings with consciousness can be traced back to Ancient Greece. In one Greek legend, Cadmus, a Phoenician prince, kills a sacred water-dragon after it slays
Currently, computers can calculate and run algorithms much faster than humans, and if strong A.I. was to exist, these technological beings would be intelligently superior to human kind. Elon Musk, a world renowned technological genius, fears Silicon Valley’s rush into artificial intelligence, because he believes it poses a threat to humanity (Dowd, Maureen). Musk stated that “one reason to colonize Mars – so that we’ll have a bolt-hole if A.I. goes rogue and turns on humanity” (Dowd, Maureen). The possibility of this outcome is real because if strong A.I. was to exist, they have the potentially to surpass humans in every aspect. The main difference between A.I. and humans is that humans are conscious beings that can think for themselves. If A.I. was to develop consciousness, they would be able to do every task much more efficiently than humans. According to Stephen Hawking, “If people design computer viruses, someone will design AI that improves and replicates itself. This will be a new form of life that outperforms humans” (Sulleyman, Aatif). This world-renowned physicist believes that A.I. will begin to self-improve upon themselves through an algorithm that allows A.I. to learn. Ultimately, this technological being will advance to a point where it realizes that it does not need humans anymore. “Back in 2015, he [Stephen Hawking] also
Strong AI, or strong artificial intelligence, is a class in artificial intelligence development that strives to develop computers that can operate on the human level. One of the ideas of strong AI is that digital computers can one day intellectualize on the same level as a human mind. The concept of strong AI provides insight on the relationship between the physical and mental states. With strong AI, the mind is analogous to programs and the brain is analogous to computer hardware. Strong AI provides a thought provoking philosophy on what constitutes a mind.
Artificial intelligence has come a long way since the first robot. In 1950, Alan Turing of Britain publishes, Computer Machinery and Intelligence. This book was proposed to be the birth of artificial intelligence as we know it. The first robot that presents the usage of artificial intelligence was built in 1969. The purpose of this robot was to try out navigation using basic tools such as cameras and bump sensors (Marshall 371). Since then, we have made a million robots way better than this one and we’re going to continue doing so. While the world advances, so is technology. It’s slowly progressing and become better and more reliable. Artificial intelligence is a certain type of technology that is resourceful to our nation. We are using it in the medical field, it’s been helpful to military forces, and it’s helping our world become a better place.
To begin, the main issue of development of Artificial Intelligence is the economic factors. Firstly, one of the main negative effects of AI on economy is unemployment. According to the suggesting of Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael A. Osborne of Oxford University during next 20 years 47 per cent of all USA jobs under the threat and will be replaced with intelligence machines (Vincent). If jobs will be automated, people will lose their workplaces and it is becomes one of the harmful problems not only for economy, but also for society. Because, if people will not have a workplace, they will not be able to provide their needs. Furthermore, development of AI can be a reason of increasing inequality of wages. For instance, the salaries of computer workers approximately earn 10 to 15 percent more than others. (Frey and Osborne). It is also one of the economic problems because it can lead to discontent of workers who hav...
The concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has myriad definitions. It is commonly described as the ability of a man-made machine to imitate human behaviour. Artificial intelligence is present, at a range of levels, in almost all modern-day technology; all computers and a host of home appliances use AI, in various manners. Robotics, which is an up and coming branch of technology, combines Artificial Intelligence, advanced hardware to create highly innovative machines. The use of such machines ranges from fixing a part in a factory assembly line to a pull sized robot employed in unblocking blood arteries.
Artificial Intelligence is intelligence which is exhibited by machines. A.I. simply refers to making computers act more intelligently.
It involves a number of different sciences including computer science, psychology, linguistics, philosophy, and mathematics. The main problem with A.I. is that human intelligence is difficult to copy and recreate. Simple things like interacting and communicating with others is remarkable hard to program. Computers would have to understand natural language; the same way another person would. It would have to think and form ideas based on questions. According to, Patrick Winston a professor at CSAIL, “simple mistakes like answering “Richard Nixon” on a question asking for a first lady points to... lack of human-like intelligence”.(Winston) Currently there are many project by large organizations that claim they found ways to get computers to understand people. Its still very early to say what the future of A.I. will be, but in a world where everybody uses phones and computers its probably going to be a big part of
In order to see how artificial intelligence plays a role on today’s society, I believe it is important to dispel any misconceptions about what artificial intelligence is. Artificial intelligence has been defined many different ways, but the commonality between all of them is that artificial intelligence theory and development of computer systems that are able to perform tasks that would normally require a human intelligence such as decision making, visual recognition, or speech recognition. However, human intelligence is a very ambiguous term. I believe there are three main attributes an artificial intelligence system has that makes it representative of human intelligence (Source 1). The first is problem solving, the ability to look ahead several steps in the decision making process and being able to choose the best solution (Source 1). The second is the representation of knowledge (Source 1). While knowledge is usually gained through experience or education, intelligent agents could very well possibly have a different form of knowledge. Access to the internet, the la...
Who would have guessed that the once mere concept of artificial intelligence (AI) could actually be a reality in the year 2015? Artificial intelligence is the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. It is also the name of the academic field of study which studies how to create computers and computer software that are capable of intelligent behavior. But we can go even deeper into the topic and question: really what defines intelligence? In this day and age if you were to ask a child this question I’m sure it was greatly differ from a child’s answer thirty, twenty or even ten years ago. The technological world is ever-changing, growing exponentially and very quickly and this is causing extreme effects on the lives of every person on
Artificial intelligence is defined as developing computer programs to solve complex problems by applications of processes that are analogous to human reasoning processes. Roughly speaking, a computer is intelligent
Shyam Sankar, named by CNN as one of the world’s top ten leading speakers, says the key to AI evolvement is the improvement of human-computer symbiosis. Sankar believes humans should be more heavily relied upon in AI and technological evolvement. Sankar’s theory is just one of the many that will encompass the future innovations of AI. The next phase and future of AI is that scientists now want to utilize both human and machine strengths to create a super intelligent thing. From what history has taught us, the unimaginable is possible with determination. Just over fifty years ago, AI was implemented through robots completing a series of demands. Then it progressed to the point that AI can be integrated into society, seen through interactive interfaces like Google Maps or the Siri App. Today, humans have taught machines to effectively take on human jobs, and tasks that have created a more efficient world. The future of AI is up to the creativity and innovation of current society’s scientists, leaders, thinkers, professors, students and
Artificial intelligence is an idea of if the human thought process can be mechanized. It was around the 1940’s – 50’s that a group of people came together to discuss the possibility of creating an artificial brain and its uses. These people were a variety of scientists from different fields such as mathematics, economics, engineering, and etc. This was the birth of the field of artificial intelligence. While artificial intelligence would prove to be technologically revolutionary by introducing new ideas such as quantum computers or robots, said new ideas could result in the downfall of mankind. The result could range to being the plummet of the economy, the end of the human race, or even the corruption of the next generation and onwards. All of these problems resulting in the possibility of the end of the earth. The more we need to learn more about technology and further advance it, the closer we are getting to the extinction of the human race. These are the reasons why the advancement of artificial intelligent should be halted or banned so no harm can be done even without the intentions.
