As stated by Arthur Ashe, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” (www.brainyquote.com) Heroes are those that put others before themselves. They go out of their way to help others in need, and do not give up until they have accomplished their goal. Being a hero does not mean to do something significantly remarkable, like save the world. It involves doing small acts of kindness that build up to make a big difference, and facing the challenges and obstacles that come in their way with dignity. An example of a hero is Mulan, who “takes her father’s place in the Chinese army because she knows that he is hurt.” She impersonates a man and a soldier to get in the army, which is a crime punishable by death! This is certainly very heroic because Mulan took a very big risk and was willing to risk her life to protect those she loves. This is an act of love, kindness, courage, determination, and integrity, and shows how Mulan will do anything to protect those she loves. Another example of a hero is Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln truly loved and defended everyone, “not for himself only, not for us only, but for all people in all their coming generations, till time shall be no more.” (Dr. Phineas D. Gurley, Spring Board Book pg. 68) This shows how much Abraham Lincoln cared for everyone as well as how much integrity he had, since his cause - loving and defending everyone, for future generations - “survives his fall, and will survive it.” (Dr. Phineas D. Gurley, Spring Board Book pg. 68) Basically, anyone can become a hero, by going out of their way to help or protect someone else, even though they might not have a happy ending. To start, heroes put others before themselves, and focus on other people’s lives and happiness before theirs. As said by John Henry Newman, a hero, “never speaks of himself except when compelled.” Heroes try their best not to admire or speak of themselves, but to appreciate and acknowledge others. Heroes do not brag and have not an ounce of vain in them. Equally important, one of the many goals of a hero is to spread kindness and positivity. A hero, “never takes unfair advantage...or insinuates evil which he dare not say out.” Heroes do not deceive others in any manner to get what they want or to take advantage of something, neither do they insinuate any sort of evil. In fact, a hero’s main goal is to build trust amongst other people, and spread positivity and kindness to even the harshest of the harsh.
