Art appears everywhere and reflects in everything. Whether people take notice of it or not, art influences every single person’s everyday life. Used as a tool to unlock positive qualities, it influences peoples’ thoughts, feelings, and emotions about everything round them. The study and practice of art can strengthen and enlighten the individual’s mind while also influencing the people who their view work. Creating art requires the human mind to have to think differently and to use the right (creative) side of the brain. The word art comes from an ancient Indo-European root that means “to fit together.” The practice of art revolves around fitting words, images, objects, processes, and/or thoughts together (Schnapp). It has no age limitation, making art a popular hobby of all generations. Art can be made as simple as one would want but evolves into “…a serious play governed by rules and techniques that can be acquired through rigorous study and realm of freedom where the mind and body are mobilized to address complex questions.” (Schnapp). Art, a technical endeavor that holds hand in hand with problem solving, develops into crucial skills needed in the modern world. Jeffrey T. Schnapp states that, “…art isn’t to be found only in galleries and museums; it is woven into the warp and woof of an entire civilization.” It makes up the world around human existence. Buildings, cars, business advertisements, and fashion represent a few everyday things that are greatly influenced by art. The fact that art was one of the first human-made creations, shows the importance it has on mankind. The beginning of art has been traced back to Prehistoric times. Some of the earliest known works of art are Aurignacian cave paintings, drawings,... ... middle of paper ... ...t worth dropping from school. The contribution art classes have on other subjects is far too important to the students’ learning experience to be simply let go. Do you ever just sit back and wonder how many images run through your brain everyday and thinking back on that how many of those were images from our society’s pop culture? With our ever growing technology and media of our society, children are constantly being exposed to visual stimuli. Paul Duncum, a professor of art education, studies how these stimuli not only affect our students and children but also how we can incorporate them into the art classroom in an effective way. In this paper I will illustrate to you the life and work of Paul Duncum. I will be talking about Duncum’s contributions to art education, his teaching philosophy, and how I can use his beliefs and teachings in my future as an art educator but first I would like to give you some background on Paul Duncum.

Throughout history, art has provided a huge impact as it presents the spirit of a time.
For thousands of years, people have been criticizing, creating, admiring, and enjoying art. It is universal, because it is evident in our everyday lives. From the houses we live in, to the books we read and the movies we see, art plays a key role in the development of these objects. In prehistoric times, cave dwellers drew on the walls to record their everyday life. In biblical times, paintings were used to record the life and death of Christ.
The arts are not only a nice way to pass time; the arts can greatly help with education. Schools in the United States have encouraged children to have an outlet and if the outlet is not sports, most kids take some kind of art class. According to Velasco (2012), a child development specialist, certain students who have taken at least one art credit every year since the start of third grade were more likely to comprehend math and literature easier; for example, counting the beats in every stanza of music or learning the history and background of song lyrics. Velasco also states that students scored 1.5 times better in standardized tests, than kids who did not take an art credit. By helping schools fund art programs, the skills learned by students taking these classes can ultimately help schools excel in academic achievements, and they can aid students to a brighter future.
Art extends and expands our visual ideas. When artist display their visual ideas, often people see them as shocking, and often do not grasp their concept. However with time their message is seen and they are accepted by all. Artists show us new ways to see new concepts, or familiar things. Also how to interpret new situations, and events using various kinds of visual mediums.
Education of the arts enhances children better understanding of the world, and broadens their perspective on academics. The arts allow children the creativity to express themselves while challenging their intellect .These activities are good practice for their brain because they must use both sides of the brain. The classroom environment can be change by art and making
Art can be used to raise scores in every subject, “Students who took four years of art classes scored 91 points higher on their SAT exams than those who took half a year or less. Multiple studies also confirmed that there is a correlation between art engagement and students’ other achievements.” (Valeriya Metla) Even with the research linking art and better grades some educators think that it is more worth while to only focus on the core classes because it is more important to fund what is being tested than to help raise children who are creative.
In his article “Enlivening Education Through Art,” Jack Petrash supports the idea that using different art forms in the classroom as teaching techniques can often be more beneficial to both the teachers and the students as opposed to teaching without art. Creating visual art is a great way to get students engaged in the lesson. Almost every student can participate in the creative assignments, especially since artistic skill level is not important. Because creating art allows students to use higher thought processes, students can concentrate on the lesson and ruminate on what is being taught while they are working on their lesson-related art assignment. Tapping into one’s creativity brings emotions and memories into play; thus, while learning
The creation of art, music, dance, sporting activity and literature should be made a fundamental part of every school 's pre-K to 12th grade curriculum. Being artistic and creative can help students be who they are and stand out. It can help them use their knowledge and come up with extraordinary ideas to make big changes in the world, and it can also keep students away from bad things and be better human beings by doing what they are interested in.
Art Education is not always valued in school settings. Although some may see it as an unnecessary use of school funding, there are many who believe it is beneficial to students in more ways than one. There are many different studies that have been conducted to test the effects that art education has on school-aged children. Some studies have proven that art education can help students to improve in other academic areas. In a journal article from Ohio State University’s “Theory in Practice,” Karen A Hamblen states, “There are linkages between art learning and learning in other subjects areas and that art study can promote creative behaviors, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement.” It has also been found that the arts can teach children better self-regulatory strategies, and even foster more confidence and self-efficacy in school which relates to confidence in academics. Overall, art education in schools has been very beneficial and has proven to ignite creativity, confidence, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement in students.
Throughout the ages art has played a crucial role in life. Art is universal and because art is everywhere, we experience it on a daily basis. From the houses we live in (architecture) to the movies we see (theatre) to the books that we read (literature). Even in ancient culture art has played a crucial role. In prehistoric times cave dwellers drew on the wall of caves to record history. In biblical times paintings recorded the life and death of Christ. Throughout time art has recorded history. Most art is created for a specific reason or purpose, it has a way of expressing ideas and beliefs, and it can record the experiences of all people.
The arts have influenced my life in amazing ways. Throughout my life, art has been the place I run to and my escape from the world. As I’ve grown older, art has become so much more than that. Every piece of art I create is a journey into my soul. It’s a priceless way to deal with my emotions and my struggles. I create art not only because I enjoy it and because I want to, but because I have to. Somewhere deep inside there is a driving force, urging me to put my heart down on paper. I become emotionally attached to each of my pieces because they are like dashes on the wall marking my growth. Each one is the solution to a problem I have dealt with and overcome.
