Arson: A Malicious Crime The devastating consequences of arson ripple through affected individuals and neighborhoods, leaving behind a trail of destruction and trauma. Considering that arson is one of the most serious crimes with significant social and economic consequences, it is essential to understand the reasons behind it and put preventive and remedial measures in place. This paper explores the theoretical foundations of arson, applying strain theory as a lens for analyzing the reasons behind arsonists' actions. Thomas' actions can be analyzed through the perspective of strain theory, in which the strain originates from his failure to effectively cope with conflicts with others and achieve his desired goals by appropriate means. In this case, his arguments with his partner and the failed attempt to set fire to her car demonstrate his frustration and inability to handle issues in an acceptable way. According to Agnew (1985), individuals who typically commit similar crimes may also experience similar strains in their lives. For example, they may face financial difficulties, relationship conflicts, or other stressors that lead them to perceive arson as a solution to their problems. In such cases, arson becomes a means to express frustration and seek revenge.
