Armand Fernandez
Born as Armand Fernandez in 1928 at Nice, the son of an antique dealer. His first lessons in painting were given him by his father. He took his Baccalauréat in philosophy and mathematics in 1946 and began to study painting at the École Nationale d'Art Décoratif, Nice. In 1947 he met Yves Klein and Claude Pascal in Paris and accompanied them on a hitch-hiking tour of Europe. Completing his studies in Nice in 1949, he enrolled as a student at the École du Louvre, where he concentrated on the study of archaeology and oriental art. His pictures at this time were influenced by Surrealism. In 1951 he became a teacher at the Bushido Kai Judo School. He completed his military service as a medical orderly in the Indo-Chinese War. He did abstract paintings in 1953.
He took part in actions with Yves Klein, with whom he had been discussing subjects such as Zen Buddhism and astrology since 1947. He married Eliane Radigue. He was impressed by a Kurt Schwitters exhibition in Paris in 1954 which inspired him to begin his work with stamp imprints, the Cachets. He earned his living during this period through occasional jobs, selling furniture and harpoon fishing. He had his first one-man exhibitions in London and Paris in 1956. In 1957 he travelled in Persia, Turkey and Afghanistan. In 1958 he dropped the "d" in his name, inspired by a printer's error. He started his monotypes using objects, his Allures. In 1959 he did his first Accumulations and Poubelles. The Accumulations were assemblages of everyday objects and similar consumer articles displayed in boxes. The Poubelles were similar, but used collections of rubbish. In 1960 he became a founding member of the Nouveaux Réalistes. Through this group he made contact with members of the Zero group. He showed in New York and Milan in 1961 and made his sliced and smashed objects (Couples, Colères). In 1962 he showed in various European cities and also in Los Angeles, where he was assisted by Edward Kienholz. He started his so-called Combustions, or burned objects, in 1963.
He also took up part-time residence in New York. In 1964 he had his first museum retrospectives at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. Polyester now became his most important material. In 1965 and 1966 he was given large retrospective exhibitions in Krefeld, Lausanne, Paris, Venice and Brussels.

"Something not too hard you think I might like." Carefully I chose one, Willa Cather’s My ‘Antonia. But when, several weeks later, I happened to see it next to her bed unread except for the first few pages, I was furious and suddenly wanted to cry. I grabbed up the book and took it back to my room and placed it in its place, alphabetically on my shelf." (p.626-627)
He took part in many exhibitions notably in 1919 with Marvin Cone in Cedar Rapids, at the Galerie Carmine in Paris in 1926, at the Lakeside Press Galleries in Chicago and at the Ferargil Galleries in New York in 1935. In addition, many retrospectives were held after his death at the Annual Exhibition of American Painting at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1942, at the Municipal Art Gallery of Davenport in 1957, at the University of Kansas in 1959, at the Art Institute of Chicago and the M.H de Young Memorial Museum of San Francisco in 1995-96, at the Joslyn Art Museum of Omaha and at the Museum of Art of Worcester, Mass.
Is it possible for a six-year-old boy to successfully seek asylum in the United Sates against his father’s wishes? This is the main point of exploration in the April 21, 2000 article (off the wire) that appeared in The Plain Dealer. The article relates, “to be granted asylum, people must show that they were persecuted or had a legitimate fear of persecution in their home country because of race, religion, nationality, membership in a social group or political opinions.” According to the article, the case has not reached a decision because of the debate over whether Elian Gonzalez has the right to seek asylum. For the time being, he is allowed to remain with his Miami relatives until the matter is resolved. There may be several levels of appeals and years of debate if the case is sent to an asylum hearing.

In the late 1500's after the disappointment of Coronado's non-glorious expedition was forgotten, Spain had a renewed interest in New Mexico. King Philip II needed a new conquistador to go to New Mexico to obtain and claim the 3 G's (Gold, Glory, and God) for the crown and for the country. The man chosen to fill this job was Juan de Onate. Being of noble Basque blood it seems that Juan de Onate was destined to become someone of importance. It is said that the Basque people were "Hardy, self-reliant, and stubbornly strong" and "In New Spain won distinction as explorers, soldiers, and discoverers of mines on the frontier." Juan's father Cristobal de Onate was one of those Basque people described above. In 1546 Cristobal along with a few other Basque men discovered a silver mine in Mexico, but was already rich due to his many encomiendas, his salary as a lieutenant-governor, and many other businesses he owned. Given Juan de Onate's tremendous wealth and outstanding family history King Philip thought that he had found an excellent conquistador, but would soon find out that he was wrong.
Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 in Malaga. Picasso’s father, who was a drawing teacher at the Escuela Provin cal de Bell Artes starting teaching Picasso how to paint. His father recognized and encouraged his son’s talent as an artist. His childhood and teenage drawings showed his father’s repertory, an interest with the bullfight and conventional academic work. He enrolled in his father’s drawing classes in 1892 and produced about fifteen oil portraits in 1895.He did experiments with caricatures and sketches in 1894. At the age of 21, his intestinal operation led to appendicitis. Henri was on bed rest for most of 1890 and to help him occupy his time, his mother bought him a set of paints. That was the turning point in Henri’s life. He decided to give up his career in law for a career in art. Matisse himself said, “It was as if I had been called. Henceforth I did not lead my life. It led me” (Getlein 80). Soon after, Henri began to take classes at the Academie Julian to prepare himself for the entrance examination at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (Essers 7). Henri failed his first attempt, leading to his departure from the Academie. He then enrolled at the Ecole des Arts decoratifs and that is where his friendship with Albert Marquet began. They started working alongside of Gustave Moreau, a distinguished teacher at Ecole des Beaux-Arts, even though they had not been accepted (Essers 12). In 1895, Henri finally passed the Beaux-Arts entrance examination and his pathway to his new career choice had officially begun.

Jose de Goya y Lucientes was born on March 30, in the year 1746, in Fuendetodos, a small village in northern Spain. At the age of fourteen he became an apprentice for a local artist, Jose Luzan. Later he traveled to Madrid where he took interest in the last of the great Venetian painters. After attempting and failing to enroll in the Royal Academy of San Fernando, Goya then traveled to Rome, Italy. Then on to Sagossa in 1771 where he painted fresco in several local churches, establishing a reputation.
Allen Ginsberg was a beat poet who rose to popularity in the 1950’s when his two most popular pieces of poetry were published. Allen Ginsberg was born in Newark, New Jersey on June 3, 1926 to parents Naomi and Louis Ginsberg. His parent’s professions seemed to have influenced him since his mother was a political activist and his father was a poet and teacher (Lewis, 2002). One of his most popular works, “Howl”, was a poem written about his thoughts on capitalism and fellow Beat poets, while “Kaddish” was written to celebrate his late mother’s life (Lewis, 2002). Most of Ginsberg’s poems were about the processes of one’s thoughts based on surrounding influences. They were about controversial topics such as war, civil rights, and drugs. Although
Dubai has undergone four major development phases since its beginning. The first stage occurred during the years of 1900-1955 and was marked by slow growth and limited physical expansion due to constrained economic growth and marginal increase in population. From 1956-1970, Dubai began its second phase of development based on a 1960 master plan created by a British architect. The master plan called for the provision of a road system, zoning of the town into areas for different land uses and the creation of a new town center. In 1966, with the discovery of oil Dubai underwent transformation from an economy based off the pearl industry into a wealthy oil economy. During the third development phase, taking place from 1971-1980, Dubai experienced planned suburban growth with the inclusion of major transport developments such as the Shindagha Tunnel. The year of 1980 marks the beginning of Dubai’s current development phase: rapid urban expansion (Pacione, 2005).
