Athens, even though named after a goddess, was an extremely male dominated culture. To take a step further, you only had true freedom if you were a male of Athenian decent. Women, foreigners, and slaves were not viewed anywhere near the same light. Women and foreigners (Metics) held similar social status and differed from slaves slightly, but they also shared certain things in common. In ancient Athens, slaves had little to no rights. For example, if a slave were to commit a crime, then he or she would not go to trial. They would instead be forced to have their body suffer the consequences. He believed that even though possibly immoral, it was necessary for a few to be ruled over. Aristotle identifies slaves as an inferior class who are only valuable for their bodies and nothing else. He compared them to lower tier animals who followed strictly instinct to survive and could not apprehend higher thinking (Ancient History Sourcebook). Aristotle, along with the majority of Athens, viewed women in a similar light. They all viewed women as inferior to men and believed that women should be ruled by men, much like slaves. Demosthenes referred to women as tools for a certain purpose, ranging from prostitutes for pleasure to wives for simply providing children. Men thought so lowly of women, that in Euripides’s drama, he introduced women as a curse to men and a venom worse than that of reptiles (What Athenian Men Said). They consisted of both male and female residents of Athens that were not born to Athenian parents. Much like slaves, metics were viewed as un-equals and were not considered citizens. They also could not participate in societal politics or vote. Along with slaves, metics had no legal right to get married to an Athenian citizen. Furthermore, metics were also viewed as lower in the eye of the law. The punishment of harming a metic was not as severe as harming a citizen. Much of the freedom and rights given to the metics belonged to the hetaera. The hetaera were courtesans that could do as they please and wander wherever they pleased. Many of the hetaera, even though still disrespected due to their gender and occupation, were educated in dancing and singing and tended to participate in philosophical debates. Even though metics were not allowed to marry, they could captivate with their beauty and cause a man to provide for them. If a metic was the hetaera, they could become a mistresses and create a lavish life for themselves
For an example, it was quite acceptable for a man to commit adultery- however a woman was to remain chaste. The only exception to this was if the lover in question was a god. For some odd reason, it seemed that men were allowed to be philanderers while their wives stayed at home. This is evidenced in the Odyssey quite well- Odysseus the ?hero? is free to sample all the pretty ladies he cares to, whereareas Penelope his wife is expected to fend off all the suitors at home. Predictably, Penelope melts into his arms when she realizes it is her long lost husband without pausing to consider what he has done in his absence. For instance, they had no role in politics, leaving that completely to men, were expected to stay indoors for the majority of their lives doing household work because they were under the control of a male relative, usually being their father or husband, and they were not allowed to study medicine. These standards were set by great writers such as Aristotle who wrote of women being inferior to men. He believed women were more emotional, which is why they would be useless in politics, and they were more deceptive and mischievous. Because only men were doctors, many women were dying during childbirth due to the fact that they felt uncomfortable about having a man handle their pregnancy.

When it came to the difference in levels of power and the rights of women, Sparta was a leader in its time. At the same time, their rights as citizens were almost the same. While they did not take an active part in politics, they had opinions and ideas like women all over the world. Their thoughts, deeds, and opinions rarely recorded or if they were, the male historians or philosophers of the time recorded them. What were roles did the women in ancient Athens and Sparta? Were they citizens, did they have personal freedoms? On the other hand, did they in a time when the beginnings of democracy were happening were they less than a second-class citizen? One can hardly deny that in Euripides’ plays women are often portrayed as weak, uncertain, and torn between what they must do and what they can bring themselves to do. Other women appear to be the root of grave evils, or simply perpetrators of heinous crimes. In a day when analysis of characters and plot had yet to be invented, it is easy to see why he might have been thought to be very much against women. However, when looking back with current understanding of what Euripides was doing at the time, armed with knowledge of plot devices and Socratic philosophy, this argument simply does not hold up. In fact, a very strong argument can be made to the opposite, that Euripides was in fact very much in support of women’s rights, and thought they were treated unfairly.
