According to the October 21, 2014, US Magazine, it has been disclosed that Ariana Grande has abandoned her childhood religion. Grande grew up Catholic but has elected to withdraw herself from the church, due to the lack of acceptance. The Catholic church has always been known to act in disreputable ways towards openly gay men, but now that Grande’s brother is one of those men she has withdrawn from the church completely. Early on Sara had very secular morals and delved deeply into worldly things, never considering looking to Christ for fulfillment (Miles, 9). Miles wasn’t your typical convert either. She is also a lesbian, not that there is anything at all wrong with that, but that is a very controversial topic within the church. In my own experience, my parents are very conservative and don’t exactly agree with gay rights, but they aren’t hateful toward gays. In the early stages of Catherine's life the surfacing modern age was bringing with it social turmoil which spread throughout Europe (Giordani 3). During Catherine's lifetime, according to Mary Ann Sullivan in her essay “St. Catherine of Siena,” the center of Catholic rule fluctuated between Rome and Avignon and contributed to a schism between popes in Italy and France (1). Catherine was born 23rd in a line of 25 children and, according to Sullivan “even at a young age, [she] sensed the troubled society around her and wanted to help” (1). While her parents were not exceptionally religious, St. Catherine's biographer Blessed Raymond of Capua discusses Catherine's early zeal for Catholic practices: “When she was about five she learned the Hail Mary, and repeated it over and over again as often as she could…she was inspired by heaven to address the Blessed Virgin in this way whenever she went up and down stairs, stopping to kneel on each step as she did so” (24). Since starting Diaconate formation, one main question always gets asked, “Why are you doing this?” It seems like honesty, loyalty, and integrity are out- of- place in today’s world. The world has become a place where thinking about what is good for others is being replaced by individualism. There is a constant thought of “What is in it for me?” We cannot grow this way. “No community, whether as small as a family or as large as a nation, can grow with this attitude. Individualism always weakens the community and causes the rest to suffer.” Many of the problems, the world is facing is due to God not being the center of people’s lives anymore. “We are failing to do as Christ did, reach out and meet people in their need, their brokenness.” People are failing to recognize the good of the Catholic Church.
