Transgender Youth: The Silent Victims
Transgender individuals are the most vulnerable of the LGBTQ community. They often find the least support in LGBTQ spaces and very little have spaces created to cater to their needs. The term transgender refers to any individual who does not conform with society’s views on gender. This can include people who do not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth or people who identify outside of the gender binary, meaning they do not identify as just a man or a woman. Trans people often have to deal with unsupportive families, victimization, and lack of adequate healthcare. This is extremely true for trans youth, who are not only vulnerable because of their gender identity but also their age. Support for transgender youth, especially in schools, is needed because they are often abused and mistreated in other aspects of their lives. …show more content…

This is reflected in the works written and research done about transgender youth. “The systematic pervasiveness of transgender invisibility in a dominant heterosexual society perpetuates both heterosexism and stigma, not only in academic literature but also in social service agencies” (8). One of the agencies we see this is in schools. Suppression of trans people has led to their needs not being met in school settings. Lack of transgender voices in mainstream society is directly harmful to transgender people. There is a lack of knowledge of the needs that transgender people face and because of that there is a lack of services for them. The otherness of transgender people and trans lives needs to be eliminated so that they can live healthy, safe
