Many students are required to take standardized tests in school, but how well are these tests really representing student knowledge? Standardized testing is used in many schools to test an individual’s academic abilities. There are many arguments people make about whether these tests are truly accurate or not. Some people would say it's beneficial and helps schools determine what a student is capable of, but others disagree. However, with much evidence, it makes some think standardized testing does not give a precise measure of a person's skills. Furthermore, test anxiety can change a student's outlook on education, especially with assessments as important as standardized tests. Initially, this plays a big role in inaccurate scores being obtained by students. More consideration should be given to how this affects the results of standardized exams. Another argument against the accuracy of standardized tests is that they are set up similarly and assume that students are learning the same way. Standardized tests can begin to have patterns that students may notice. This leads to guessing, rather than the application of knowledge to answer questions. These tests are set up with the same questions or a division of questions that are similar based on a certain subject (Tunnell). The questions lack individuality to meet a person's comprehension of a subject. Additionally, the results are used to define education standards and whether the test taker meets them or not. Standardized testing requires student to answer same or similar questions with given answer choices that are often in multiple choice or true or false form. Dating back from 2200 B.C standardized testing is recorded being used in China ,where people applying for government jobs had to take an examination ,testing their knowledge on confucian philosophy and poetry.During the mid-1800s in Industrial Revolution ,soon after child labor laws were enacted taking children out of farms and factories and putting them into schools the use of standardized test was introduced to America in Boston. Standardized testing was being used to compare schools and teaching quality; Boston’s program was soon adopted nation wide. Have you ever worked really hard on something, only to find out that all of your work was not actually necessary? Some might say “these tests are just test- not the end of the world” according to “High Stakes Testing Pros and Cons” by Roberta Munoz. Who seems to not realize that some of these tests can cause you to repeat a grade or not graduate from high school. For example, the FSA, which prohibits you from getting your diploma if you fail the reading or writing part of it. Money for standardized testing if being spentbefore students even set their eyes on a college application, and definitely before they start fillingout their applications. Throughout the United States standardized testing is a popular way that educators measure a student’s academic ability. Although it may seem like a good idea to give a bunch of students the same test and see how each one does, it is not that simple. The results do not represent how smart a student is or a student's potential to do great things in the real world. In taking a standardized test one student may have a greater advantage over another for many reasons. Reasons that are not shown in the standardized test score.
Standardized testing is not the best way to measure how well a teacher teaches or how much a student has learned. Schools throughout the United States put their main focus on standardized tests; these examinations put too much pressure on the teachers and students and cause traumatizing events. Standardized testing puts strain on teachers and students causing unhealthy occurrences, Common Core is thrown at teachers with no teaching on how to teach the new way which dampers testing scores for all students, and the American College Test determines whether a child gets into college or not based on what they have learned during high school. Standardized tests are disagreeable; tests should not determine ranking of people.
Don’t you think students should take standardized tests? To start with standardized tests make sure schools are doing good. It also helps students prepare for later on in school such as elementary school, middle school, high school, and even collage. Even though it takes a while to get the test results back it only takes about 2 days to test. If students didn't take standardized tests how would you know how much they have progressed through the year.It will also give you preperation for next year.Sometimes the time depends on how long the students take to test. It not only tells you how good kids are doing but how well the teachers are teaching. It also shows and helps to know what subjects students are struggling in and what they're succeeding
Who, what, when, where, why? Curiosity is always persistent in the younger years, and society should encourage this. The trouble is, the United States education system is, unknowingly, doing everything in its power to destroy students’ natural want to learn. Much to the joy of every student in the U.S., what the educational system is doing can certainly be undone. Currently, the U.S. uses standardized testing such as the SAT, the ACT, and state mandated tests like Ohio’s AIR testing to assess an individual’s knowledge. Argument Against Standardized Testing President Bush is promoting annual standardized testing for all students in grades three through eight. This bill is currently being considered in Congress, and has garnered much support. As of right now, 15 states test students in those grades, and more than 20 have high school exit exams, which look only at the test score of a student, not at his or her academic achievements. Standardized testing is an unfair and inaccurate form of judging a person’s intellect. In many cases, people are either over- or underrepresented by their test scores, partly because America does not currently have the capabilities to fairly score the increasing number of tests.

I guarantee you that.” This quote by Michelle Obama illustrates the idea that standardized testing should not have such a large influence on education in America. However, a majority of people are under the impression that standardized tests are an accurate method to measure a person's intellectual ability. I believe that standardized tests have developed into a very critical part of the American education system; that is hindering the growth of students and teachers instead of providing a tool that can accurately measure knowledge.

Standardized tests, we start taking them in elementary school, we progress to tougher tests in high school to help us get into college, then there are even harder tests to help us get a job, but how useful, are they? Throughout elementary, middle, and high school they prepare us for these tests, students spend countless hours.
