In this essay, I argue that pornography is a symptom of a larger issue in our society and that it should be censored and regulated by the state by acting against those who depict degrading and violence of women in pornography because it contributes to the larger problem of women's inequality by portraying women in a dehumanized way that damages their liberty and their fight for equality. I will begin this essay by first describing what negative and positive liberties are and how pornography is in conflict with both concepts. I will also evaluate these points and solidify my position. It uses the excuse of freedom of speech to enact sexual abuse on women and pretend that they enjoy this kind of pain and degradation. Catherine MacKinnon likens pornographers to those who have participated in Nazi March in Skokie, where a group of people abused their right to free speech and paraded around town, essentially preaching hate (p.959). Women like victims of that march are basically told to respect and tolerate freedom of expression of the pornographers while their own freedom and liberty and are being destroyed. The positions of the victims are disregarded in the name of free speech as they are told to look away if they don't like what they see (p.956). This kind of silencing is, even more, devastating when it is enforced by the state. Women are affected by pornography in terms of negative liberty because pornography does not respect their agency or represent who they really as human beings but attempts to frame them more as slaves whose sole function is sexual gratification for men. What is, even more, shocking is that the state seems to coincide with this approach because it too is fundamentally sexist and based on male dominant ideology. Meanwhile, we sit here and debate over if pornography is a viable freedom of expression if it really harms women's equality prospects, there are billions of women around the world who is victims of the ideology of male supremacy which strips women of their power of expression, self-mastery, and subjectivity.
