Arguments Against Immigration Essay

Immigration has been one of the many controversial issues our society has encountered. By definition, immigration is the action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country. The United States experienced major waves of immigration during the Colonial Era. Many immigrants came to America seeking greater economic opportunities. Due to the increase of immigrants and worsening of economic conditions in the 1800s, Congress began to pass the first significant immigration legislations. Ever since then, our society has had strong opinions about about the entry of immigrants. Many support immigration into the U.S. while others argue against this. Immigration should be allowed in the United States if they are able to demonstrate that they are able to benefit and not bring harm to

our society.
To start off, a multitude of Americans believe that immigrants bring danger to the citizens of the United States.

Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, on many occasions, has portrayed illegal immigration as an economic threat and source of increased crime. However, studies show that immigrants are not the source of increased crime. immigrants would allow a boost in our economy through an increased workforce, additional taxes, and crime. A study by The Sentencing Project, a criminal justice research and advocacy group, found that “foreign-born residents of the United states commit crime less often that native-born citizens.” Immigrants do not increase crime rate and pose any risks to our society.

Furthermore, immigrants are a potential asset to our nation. Immigration has allowed the upbringing of ideas, cultures, arts, and cuisines. Immigrants enhance America’s ability to trade and invest profitably, as well as keep our economy flexible. In 1997, a study by the National Academy of Sciences concluded that immigration provided a “significant positive gain” to the U.S economy. The United States has benefited greatly from the people all over the world who have immigrated

Many Americans are against immigration because of the amount of illegal immigrants in our country. They believe that immigrants are an economic burden and that they show the weakening of the legal and national security of the United States. Though this claim may be convincing and valid, immigrants who resettle in the United States only desire to follow their dreams, escape poverty, or seek a better life. Barack Obama, the 44th president, once said, “What makes someone American isn’t just blood or birth, but allegiance to our founding principles and faith in the idea that anyone from anywhere can write the next chapter of our story.” Though these people may be undocumented immigrants, they still pay taxes and contribute to the economy. Legalization of illegal immigrants would allow a boost in our economy through increase in workforce, increase in taxes, and additional investments. Illegal immigrants are not delivering harm to our country and can aid the economy.
All in all, the United States should authorize the entry of immigrants if they prove to contribute and not negatively impact our society and economy. Immigration is a benefit to our country, It creates more jobs, opens more opportunities, generates more economic revenue, makes the country more productive, makes our economy more flexible, and offers a mix of cultural benefits. Americans believe that undocumented immigrants bring up crime rates and harm into our society, but research explains that this is untrue.
