According to the lecture, democratic socialism has a central idea of equality and fraternity. Its basic point of view is that individual rights, as far as that is possible, must start by guaranteeing to all the necessary conditions (existence, food, shelter, education and health care) which enable a meaningful exercise of these very rights (Lowey). Therefore, democratic socialists believe that capitalism can be tamed and controlled so that the problem of inequality can be avoided. This can be done by focusing on strong welfare that is provided by tax payers. Therefore, democratic socialism has progressive taxation which means wealthier people pay a lot more than people who do not make a lot of money. But one year after same-sex marriage was legalized, it was abolished 7 February 2018. This is a recent tourism issue that the two ideologies mentioned above would take different approaches. First of all, because democratic socialism focuses on individual rights, it would not favor the abolishment of same-sex marriage. Democratic socialists would suggest that Bermuda has historically not been an LGBT-friendly destination, but when same-sex marriage was legalized, there was some interest from the LGBT community. However, with the repeal, interest in Bermuda from LGBT travelers will likely dry up (Travel Weekly). John Tanzella, president and CEO of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association, called the repeal “surprising” and “unfortunate” (Travel Weekly). Therefore, some democratic socialists might boycott about the repeal of same-sex marriage law, trying to fight for their individual rights and the problem of inequality. On the other hand, conservatism believes in traditional values, which is against same-sex marriage. Based on this belief, conservatism will advocate this change in the law. Conservatism believers will explain why they are against the legalization of same-sex marriage, stating traditional reasons, such as same-sex marriage would undercut the norm of sexual fidelity within marriage and would further isolate marriage from its procreative purpose (Family Research Council).
