The topic I chose to do my research is on is it necessary to test medicines on animals in The US? It is really important to know about animal testing how it done and animal testing is affecting our economy and also as well as the population of the animals. The issue with animal testing is that all the cosmetic products we test on animals it does not work as same as on humans because humans are really different than animals and they don’t react as same as animals do. As we all know animals do not develop the same diseases as humans do like human’s gets different types of diseases such as various types of heart diseases, cancer and HIV while reading article “Arguments against Animal Testing” talked about how researchers put the duplicate symptoms so they can see the reactions of experiments they came up with. But as we learned in biology these diseases are caused by genetics and many other personal experiences. Animal testing is not reliable according to “Cruelty free International” 95% of drugs fail in human trail because of various reasons such as safety reasons and maybe because they do not work. Researchers use dogs, cats and many other animals for testing but that does not provide any evidence that drug will be safe for human use. Why do we have to use animals for research? Many humans and animals get the same illnesses because animals are biologically similar to humans. Animals have a shorter life cycle than humans and as a result, they can be studied throughout their whole life span or across several generations. According to information from the Office of Technology Assessment, it is estimated that between 17 and 23 million animals are used in research each year. Approximately 95% of these animals are rats and mice specifically bred for research and 4.25% of these animals include rabbits, guinea pigs, sheep, fish, frogs, insects, and other species. Most importantly, only 0.75% of the animals in research are cats, dogs, and primates. Major medical advances have been made because of the research of these animals. (Animal Research 2013)
The European Union (composed of 28 European countries) and India have both banned animal testing in their countries. The European Union has stated that animal testing is unnecessary which is proven by the Food and Drug Administration proved that 92% of all products that reacted positively in animals were harmful or ineffective in humans as we are two completely different species! Albeit, keep in mind that this 92% is a part of the rare drugs that are found to be effective or even safe for animals. In addition, many people may be concerned that we may have to test out new products on humans instead of animals. The thing is that we already do. For the reason that animal testing is so unreliable, someone will have to, some time or another, be the person to test the specific drug.
Animals and humans have different genes meaning that the products being used are going to have different effects on different species (Burrell). After a drug has been tested on a animal, the drug still has to go through a human trial. Which means that the drug they just spent all that time testing on the animal, still needs to be tested on a human to actually make it purchasable. Sadly, “92% of experimental drugs that are safe and effective in animals fail in human clinical trials because they are too dangerous or don’t work” (“11 Facts”). Meaning that most of the drugs used on animals, actually are not benefiting humans. A few of the drugs passed from animals, were detrimental to humans. For example, a arthritis drug tested on mice, seemed to protect their hearts, but when used on humans, it was the cause of heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths (“12 Pros and Cons”). Even when some drugs are passed, they show some side effects that were not shown during the test trial. Animals have been used to help the “war on cancer”, but the tests haven’t transferred from humans to animals. The former head of the National Cancer Institute, Richard Klausner, has stated, “The history of cancer research has been a history of curing cancer in the mouse. Companies claim that this sort of cruelty will benefit the human population by testing the “safety” of the products, as they have been for hundreds of years and although this may have been helpful in the past, scientists have discovered otherwise. “While funding for animal experimentation and the number of animals tested on continues to increase, the United States still ranks 49th in the world in life expectancy and second worst in infant mortality in the developed world” (“Animal Testing Is”). This evidence shows that while we still continue to support and spend money on animal testing, it is not working as well as we thought.Essentially we are torturing the animals for a negative outcome, both for the human and the animal. Every year about 100 million animals suffer through being poisoned, shocked, and burned for unsuccessful medical research. Some may believe that animal testing is a crucial part to medical research and should be used more frequently. Others believe the pain and suffering inflicted upon the animals is morally wrong and should not be done, no matter what benefits come from it.
We have all heard statements and read labels saying “against animal testing”, “animal cruelty-free product” and “no animals were harmed in the making of this movie…” Yet still to this day many companies continue to use animals for product and drug testing. Evidently, animal testing is a very controversial issue in the science and animal advocacy communities; as it serves as a safer and cost- efficient way to test new medicines and product lines. However, many will argue it is an unethical and inhumane way to treat animals, as science has made tremendous strides in evolution and can change their methods. With that being said, which argument holds more weight, cost and safety, over animal protection? Neither. The correct answer should be results. Is animal testing giving us the accuracy in results that we need? In my research paper, I will argue that animal testing should not be used for scientific research, as it is an inaccurate method of research in today’s society.
Hundreds of millions of animals die every year from animal testing in the United States. Innocent animals are used everyday in laboratories for biology advancements, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetic testing. They are used to provide information to make better products that are safe for human use. Although animal experimentation has some benefits, the negatives outweigh the positives. Animal testing is killing off innocent beings for the possible human benefit, and with modern technology, there are alternative ways to test products that leave animals unharmed.

For many years there has been controversy whether or not animals should be tested on between scientists and animal right supporters. It is very debatable if animals should be tested on when a cure for a disease could be found from testing on animals. From my own personal view I have a huge heart for animals, but if we can not find other alternatives, and is possible we can find cures for diseases, then animals may be used for research, but only for medical reasons.

The say that many cosmetic companies have sought better ways to test their products without the use of animal subjects. For many years now, animals have been used for testing and experimentation. Many organizations like PETA and the ARF (Animal Rescue Foundation) strongly oppose the topic of animals being experimented on. Many people are against animal testing as a whole because not only does it harm animals, but many times they may be killed. There have been many countless years and protests against testing, and they deserved to be heard and listened to. People have begun to realize that not only does animal testing harm and kill animals every year; it has been pretty much useless.
