WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT
During the 19th century women around America began to fight for their right to vote which became the Suffrage Movement. The 19th amendment which is the bill that legally gave women in America the right to vote, was first introduced to American congress in 1878. On August 18th 1920 the amendment was implemented and ratified. However, between 1878 and 1912, nine western American states granted full voting rights to females. On may 21st 1919 the house of representatives passed the bill and within two weeks the American senate followed and approved the 19th amendment. It wasn’t until Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment on August 18th 1920, that law was implemented and ratified around the country. With these items easily available and minimising house hold chore times, it gave women free time. During their free time the women would go out with friends and even party. The flapper style and lifestyle represented freedom for women because of shortened and looser dresses and skirts, being able to drink and smoke in public, the shortened hair and the sexual liberation. ‘Flapper girls’ were usually young and unmarried with money, although most women wore the fashion made popular by flapper girls. The change in social tendencies and etiquette was heavily influenced by the behavior of the flapper girls. Cigarette advertisements began to target the women demographics due to the flapper girls popularising smoking. Divorce became more accepted in society and became easier to obtain, with its numbers doubling in America in the 1920’s. Women also began to learn to drive during this time gaining independence. In 1923 the first public American birth control clinic opened, finally giving women a say about their bodies. During the ‘roaring twenties’ women openly socialised with men without supervision.
