You probably have pennies laying all over your house probably a lot more than you think. Have you ever realized how neglected the penny really is? How often do you take pennies with you when you're out shopping or spend the time to count out the pennies to them to the bank? The penny should be eliminated from the united states currency.
The penny should be eliminated from the us currency because it cost to much to make. First, “ In the United States, the the mint says, each zinc and copper coin cost 2.41 cents to produce and distribute. It cost 1.6 Canadian cents to make a penny at the mint in Winnipeg, according to Canadian Government figures. ( A Canadian cent is worth m about 0.99 cents at the current exchange rate.) ‘ From the standpoints

of economics, that's just a total waste of money,’Mr. Velde says.” When america produces pennies and distributes them to their location it cost far more money per penny to produce and distribute than the pennies worth. This proves my position because american taxpayers are losing 1.41 cents per penny to produce a 1 cent coin and $60.2 million in 2011 which means it should not be produced. This evidence supports my claim “ the penny should be eliminated from the us currency” because really if the penny cost more than its worth then it's not worth it to produce them. So. one reason producing the penny is not a good idea is because it cost more than its worth to produce. The second reason pennys should be eliminated from US currency is they take up too much space and we just throw them out.
“‘ Pennies take up too much space in our dressers at home ,’ Jim Flaherty, the Canadian finance minister, said in a speech last month. A persuasive government brochure put it this way :” we often store them in jars, throw them away in water fountains or refuse them as change.’” This evidence is saying that people very rarely even use pennies we don't like carrying them around because they take up space and are heavy and if we do have them we often just throw them in a fountain or tell a sales clerk to “keep the change.” This proves my position because pennies cost more to produce and all we do is just throw them away or store them in a jar and if you do ever cash them in all you get is a couple dollars. This supports my claim because pennies are very neglected and are just thrown away and they cost far to much to produce just throw them away. Pennies should no longer be produced because people just throw them …show more content…
away. The last reason pennies should be eliminated from us currency is because counting pennies takes time.
“Study says that time wasted counting pennies could add up to over $700 million per year nationwide. To a retail business, time is money because many retail businesses pay their employees by the hour. If the retail clerk and customer spend just 2.5 seconds per transaction counting pennies, those seconds add up. Those seconds add up to an estimated $700 million in wages that businesses pay retail clerks to count pennies.” When retail clerks spend time during transactions to count pennies the time adds up and cost the business nationwide $700 million to pay the clerks to count pennies that could be spent better ways. This supports my position because businesses are losing a lot of money that they wouldn't have to lose if we didn't have the penny. This proves my claim because eliminating the penny would save business money and customers time. They should no longer produce pennies because they talk up
time. The other side of this argument believes that we should keep the penny because of its cultural influence. “The one cent piece has influenced our language, giving us a number of idioms, such as ‘a penny for your thoughts’ (a way to ask what someone is thinking) and ‘not one red cent’ (meaning no money at all). The coin has also given us terms like ‘penny candy’ ( a piece of candy sold for a cent) and ‘penny arcade’ (an amusement center with machines that that cost one cent to operate).” What this writer is trying to say is that we shouldn't gen rid of the penny because it shapes our language and culture. But, really if we stopped producing the penny these sayings would still remain like the sayings we have today about things in the past. Even if we get rid of the penny it can still influence us. Also we don't even really have “penny candy” or “ penny arcades” any more. The reason we should keep the penny because it shapes our culture’ is not a valid reason to keep the penny. In conclusion,we should get rid of pennies because they cost to much to produce, they take up too much space, and they take up time. And the reason they shape our culture and language is not a good one because even without the penny we would still have the sayings. It would be much easier to get rid of the penny and just round making $1.34 into $1.35 or $10.02 into 10.
Between 2001 and 2006, there has been an increase of .6 cents for the reproduction of the penny. This increase displays economic problems that may lead to fatal ones. The penny is composed of 2% copper and 98% zinc. These elements are exponentially in demand causing the price of these materials to skyrocket. Many Americans think the penny is putting our country in jeopardy with financial losses. This meaningless coin is losing money for the mint, and should be abolished.
We strive on making everything more efficient. As stated by a www.globe.com article, “The National Association of Convenience Stores and Walgreens drug store chain estimated that handling pennies adds 2 to 2.5 seconds to each cash transaction (remember that we are including the occasional customer who spends 30 seconds looking for the penny in his pocket)” (Source B) That is a lot of unneeded time. When you get the penny back does it mean anything to you? It was also estimated that if you add those 2.5 seconds, it equates to 4 hours per year handling pennies. In keeping with the thrive and efficiency to move along in America, you can be using those 4 hours for something much more productive. As another example, say you are walking down the street and you see a penny on the ground, will you stop and pick it up? You most likely will not pick it up because it has no value. Now what if it was a nickel, or a quarter? Will you pick it up? Most people will definitely pick it up. A penny is just a waste of time. Finding a penny at the bottom of your pocket or in your bag drives cashiers crazy. There would be no need for this wasted time if we abolished the penny. The penny is stopping every great American from pursuing the next biggest breakthrough or
Each month the U.S. mint produces one billion pennies a month. It would be better off to abolish the invaluable penny than to waste employees’ time in the government producing the little annoyances. Source C states how these 10 million shiny new useless items are a waste of time to the government workers. The employees could easily be more valuable if they were tracking counterfeiters. In addition, although the penny is a meaningful emblem of our president, Abraham Lincoln, we will still see his honorable face on the valuable five dollar bill. (Source G) The penny has lost its value as
They must be eliminated, but you might think. Wont prices go up and charities lose money? No. new zealand , finland, and the netherlands stopped using the one cent or the one cent euro and noticed no change in cost instead they round to the nearest five cent. Anyways the US has already gone through this process without trouble like the half cent it was eliminated in 1857 because it was too little worth. Another thing is that everyone loves lincoln so they might think that his monument might be taken away but taking away the penny won't take away his memory we will still have him on our five dollar bill which won't go away. Yes you might think it is unpatriotic or disrespectful to take away lincoln but the us military is not using pennies because they have already realized that pennies are useless and not needed so they round to the nearest five cent. So basically pennies just aren't worth making, they waste people's time and they don't even work as money like they are supposed to, and because of inflammation lose more value every year making them making everything
The debate of eliminating pennies or maintaining pennies is a current focus in the United States. Many people think that eliminating the penny would positively influence the United States because the government would not have to devote millions of dollars for pennies. While many other people think that eliminating the pennies would negatively influence the United States because of the rounding tax that would be introduced after the pennies are eliminated. I think that we should continue to keep on manufacturing the pennies because the penny shows how it impacted the English language, it can also help causes that can save lives, and pennies can keep the government from creating the rounding tax which can cost consumers millions of additional dollars.
Have a good look at the penny, what do you see? You probably see nothing but a copper coated circular poor valued cent. Little does everyone know pennies have been around longer than before their grandparents, even their great-grandparents! Matter of fact, it was around so long ago that Abraham Lincoln’s face was not the first design on the penny. I ask that you take the time to consider the American penny’s worth. Without the people’s belief in its value, the penny will be abolished. I see people every day throwing away a penny rather than to put it in their pocket and save it for future uses. Yes a penny is "outdated, almost worthless, bothersome and wasteful" (Safire) piece of junk, but it's has an economic, cultural, and historical significance to the United States of America. The problem is that nobody pays attention to that, and that gives pennies the image of no value. Three good solutions to show the pennies worth include: tolls and vending machines accepting the coin, more charities to keep their penny drives, and historical evidence of what the penny mean to America so that it can be passed on to the future generations.
In fact there are many people that oppose abolishing the penny. In source E it states “that 62 percent of people oppose abolishing the penny that has a income less then $25,000 a year.” If the penny was to be abolish then the nickel would be the lowest coin in amount of money. If the nickel was the lowest amount of money there was then that means the purchase prices of items sold would increase. The prices would increase on items sold because the penny would not be in circulation to allow the customer to pay with the correct amount of change. Instead of being able to pay $3.47 for a kids meal at MacDonalds the customer would have to pay $3.50 for the kids meal. With the increasing prices of merchandise sold in stores there could be a budget upset for many families that have to follow a tight budget. Many families have to follow a tight budget to be able to provide for there families. With a tight budget there is no room for the prices of merchandise to increase due to losing the penny. Every penny counts when it comes to having a tight budget and providing for your
Campaign finance refers to all funds raised to help increase candidates, political parties, or policy attempts and public votes. When it comes to political parties, generous organizations, and political action groups in the United States are used to collect money toward keep campaigns alive. Campaign finance always has problems when it comes to these involvements. These involvements include donating to candidate, parties and other political organization. Matthew J. Streb stated “instead of placing further restrictions on campaign donations to candidates, parties, and other political organizations, we should consider eliminating contribution restrictions entirely (Rethinking American Electoral Democracy)”. In other words, instead of allowing
"As of 2014, the cost of making a penny was estimated at 1.7¢. So yeah, it almost costs two pennies just to make one penny- which makes no sense (pun intended)". Over time, many people have called for the U.S. to stop making pennies. Three reasons why are, we have a lot of coins and bills, not many people carry around cash, and making pennies can waste time, money, and minerals. That is why I believe the U.S. should stop making the penny.
There is a side to this debate where the penny could win and stay in circulation. To start, the penny has been around for years and years and it has seemed to work for this whole time. This is true, the penny has been around and can be used still in everyday life. The turn side of this, though valid, is with systems changing is is becoming more and more rare for the penny to have a true dire need. One other strong reason to keep the penny alive would be charity. Charity relies on those people who do not necessarily care enough to keep the pennies t drop them off in the donation box. That though, has a simple solution. If the penny were no longer around nickels and dimes would begin to be the change customers and users are no longer wanting. Charity then in result
As of today America’s national debt is 18 trillion dollars and approximately 5 trillion of that is held by foreign countries including China and Japan. In the last few years we seem to hear more about balancing the country’s budget and politicians raising the debt ceiling so we can pay on this debt. How have we gotten into such an overwhelming and complicated problem with our nation’s money? Ironically the same can be said for our individual household debt as well as making the same mistakes and trying to find creative ways to be accountable to our financial responsibilities. Teaching the basics of personal finance n our schools can culturally change our financial practices, leading to a more financially literate public and a stronger, more stable, America. If the younger generations can become more financially savvy, then there is an opportunity for our nation as a whole to become less dependent on debt to survive.
The penny has been in America for centuries, it's a sentimental object for Americans everywhere. However many have debated on whether or not it should be eliminated or continue being made. The penny should be preserved because it is apart of American culture, given to charity, and keeps items cheap.
A buyer brings along with him snacks that he would like to purchase in a dollar store: chocolate chip cookies, a Pepsi, gummy bears, and a bag of chips. He waits in line, eager to consume this huge delight. It is his turn, and he hurriedly placed his treats on the counter, waiting anxiously to pay immediately. The cashier replies to him, “The price will be $5.99, sir.” The buyer takes out five one-dollar bills and four quarters. Not an instance did he ever use a penny in this case, which he thought was useless and meaningless. As you can see, the penny has become quite worthless and diminished in purpose. Many citizens would prefer to round up and pay rather than spend time and look in their
What is the point of the penny? It costs more than it actually costs. It takes up way too much space. We either store them in jars, and never think about them again, or we throw them away into the nearest fountain. And their value is so small to the point that if you had 10,000 of them, the highest you would get would be $100. So what's their point? The answer is nothing! They are absolutely and utterly worthless beyond belief. Therefore, only one conclusion is reasonable. The government should discontinue the production of the penny in the US.
Cigarettes are so addictive, so why are they still legal today? The effects of smoking on a person and around that person are so extreme and harmful that smoking should not be legal for anyone. It really amazes me why anybody would smoke and harm their body if they knew how bad it can harm their health, and potentially cause death. Not only is smoking just unhealthy, the bigger problem is that smoking can lead to death. Smoking should be made illegal since there are many negative and dangerous consequences such as secondhand, and thirdhand smoke related illnesses, health risks to the smoker, and health risks to people around the smoker. Although, if cigarettes were made illegal people that are employed by Cigarette industries would lose their
