Argumentative Essay: Why Do We Need Gun Control?

Why do we have gun control? Is it because the people or the criminals? Gun control is a very passionate subject, for the last 200 years people have debated on who should have them, and what they can have. It mainly refers to laws and policies that manage the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession or the use of firearms to control crime and reduces firearm violence. Is it limiting the second amendment of the American people?

Many countries allow citizens to buy firearms with certain restrictions and regulations, but most can't decide if it's a right or just a privilege. In America the same issue is happening, the right to bear arm is view is different ways in different people, agreeing and disagreeing what the people should have. Few states allow full-auto firearms, but the ones that do force a ATF license, full background checks, a $200 ATF tax, and a licensed gun owner that will take ownership to the firearm in the event of your death. States like California and New York only allow a 7-10 round magazine in shotguns and rifles. In november 2013, the NRA sued the city of San Francisco over an ordinance banning possession of magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. In Virginia high-capacity magazines aren't banned,

but a semi-auto rifle or pistol that allows a 20 round magazine is considered as an “assault weapon” and is not allowed to to be purchased by a citizen. That's only a few cases of what the government has banned.

The first gun ban attempt in America began in Georgia, 1837, banning all handguns, but was eventually thrown out because it was considered unconstitutional.

Now 2016, the same issues in government are still happening, 179 years later. Don't be fooled gun confiscation has already started. From forcing officers to go into homes and physically take citizen firearms in New York. To Illinois forbidding anyone to carry a firearm, even unloaded, anywhere in the state, then gun rights stripped when any are broken. The government might take in consideration that some states have more hunting than others and will loosen concealment restrictions. But even if they do that some people might take advantage of that by taking the to unneeded or unwanted

places.

A lot of the time banning full-auto firearms and “high-capacity magazines” will only apply to law following citizens, but how does that affect criminals? They have that name for a reason it's for not following law that have placed before them. So having those strict laws won't stop them from breaking them, a criminal is just going to be a criminal. 19% of people in jail are for firearm and weapon violations, those are only the people that get caught with them, by being a part of a shooting or affiliated with someone that has even involved with one. Gang are a perfect example of that, murders, and drug deals aren't usually used without some type of weapon, most of the time they aren't using your normal household protection.

When there's gun violence in the world people should have the right to protect himself or herself, their family, and property with any means necessary. You should have any weapon to do that, even if it means having 50 round magazines, and only shooting if you fear a threat for your life or anyone else's. Strengths get laws to protect the people are necessary, but limiting them for the things have the right to have isn'. The one way to lessen gun violence is to make penalties more severe instead of punishing the innocent.
