Shouldn’t all students be given the same education and chances in school equally? Why segregate certain children by refusing them a Liberal Art Education to a vocational education? Just because of their social status, ethnic background or intelligence. The main argument being put forward today is that students need to be given a chance to pursue an education or towards a career during their K-12 education to be able to branch out after they leave school.
Before discussing about the relative advantages of a Liberal Arts education, it’s probably best to first define what exactly it is. Contrary to what some initially believe, the “liberal” in Liberal Arts doesn’t

He then continues on by describing his own experience through vocational route.“[S]tudents will float to the mark you set. I and the others in the vocational classes were bobbing in pretty shallow water.”(R2). Because of the low expectations the school set on Rose and the other students and the limited education given to them resulted in them struggling to keep from falling …show more content…
She encourages and tries to engage her students to be more involved in their education. It isn’t until a discussion about the Holocaust that sparks their interest, unbeknownst to her to find out that her students know little to none about so many things. Only to realize that these students are being a denied a true education and no one in their entire lives have ever expected them to amount to anything in their education. Mrs Gruwell denounces the narrow vocational implementing teachings the school has been applying to these students for so long and takes a more broader Liberal Art approach, By doing this she is able to help her students find their “passion” and “interest” the untapped potential within themselves that the vocational system could not bring out of them. Though the educational system had gave up on these struggling students they were able to prove themselves by pushing the boundaries many believe they won’t be able to achieve. Though they were lucky to have encounter a teacher who saw more of what they were but are many other student who aren’t as lucky as
Liberal educations benefit students in the long run, long after students have paid their loans. People are able to be informed on national topic, while also being able to be self dependent. Two qualities that are essential in the modern society. I believe it is important to have such a basic understanding of education and knowledge, just like what Nussbaum agreed too in her essay. However, I also believe the curriculum should be centered around making students a better person. Institutions should try to produce good people with the right intentions instead of just focusing on testing intelligence, similar to what Cronon focused on in his essay. If we can incorporate both of these important features into our liberal education system, then and only then, will we be thriving as a society. Graduates will have a good understanding of knowledge from an array of different fields, as well as having important traits that will carry on for the rest of their
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.
After high school, there are many different opportunities that open up for everyone. Some people have the chance to go to a prestigious college right after they are done with their high school career. Others might just want a break from school and possibly take a year off. There are no right or wrong answers to what someone does after they finish high school. It all depends on the person's situation or what they feel is best for them. However, there may be some more benefits to taking a year off than going straight to college.
“Hence you see why “liberal studies” are so called; it is because they are studies worthy of a free- born gentlemen. But there is only one really liberal study – that which gives a man his liberty. It is the study of wisdom”, said Lucius Annaeus Seneca, the Roman Stoic philosopher who lived during the time of Jesus Christ. Historically speaking, learning liberal arts we learn ourselves to be passionate, loyal, brave and what is more important, generous. The word “freedom” has been the fundamental component of any American Dream. Today we celebrate our nation’s independence and allowance to govern ourselves.
College is thought of as what every parent wants for their child, so they can go off andmake something of themselves. For the most part, this is true. Those who attend college arebetter off than those who do not, on average, earning far more than their undereducatedcounterparts. College is a worthwhile investment and should be pursued by all who have thechance because it helps students further their knowledge, it is a place to find who you are, and itgives them a different perspective of the world.College is worth the cost because if college was available for everybody and collegedegrees were handed out as commonly and at the same rate as high school diplomas then collegewould not be that special. Therefore, college would just be an extension of high school. Ifanyone could get their hands on a degree, how would you be able to get the job you want? It isbetter for college to cost money because if a student really wants to attend college and furthertheir education, they should have already been willing to pay or to find a way to pay for collegeto get the upper hand on the general
The epic poem, Beowulf, a work of fiction, offers more insight into Ancient Anglo-Saxon English culture than the work of Bede, who wrote, A History of the English Church and People. The epic poem Beowulf gives an enhanced illustration and clearer understanding of the culture of the Ancient Anglo-Saxon’s. The epic poem gives the audience a picture of what the Ancient Anglo-Saxon English valued; seafaring, warriors, heroes, and paganism.
What makes a good person good? According to WikiHow, "We should learn to define our own morals ourselves. One of the simplest ways to do so is to love others, and treat them as you would like to be treated. Try to think of others before yourself. Even doing small things daily will greatly enrich and improve your life, and the lives of others around you." This quote shows us what we need to do in order to be what society thinks as, “good". In order to be a good person, you have to do good and moral things in your society consistently. However people might think that by doing one good thing once in a while will automatically make you a “good person”, but in reality it doesn’t.
A crucial topic being debated on in today’s society is core principles and disciplines. When debated and discussed, these two immense topics bring up discussion on liberal art colleges and their education. “Liberal Arts” can be translated in many different ways depending on perspectives. So what exactly is a liberal arts college/education? Patrick Connelly states, “A liberal arts college is a college with an emphasis on undergraduate study in the liberal arts and sciences. It aims to impart a broad general knowledge and develop general intellectual capacities for students” (Pg.18). Students who attend liberal art colleges experience broad and vast knowledge to create intellectual capacities that public universities will not provide. Essentially a liberal arts college gives a selected “Core” education to students to develop their skills and improve their weaknesses. Liberal arts are thought to be extremely necessary or very pointless depending on perspective. For example, two articles by two different authors explain liberal arts in a completely different way and opposite perspectives. The first
Year Round Education is becoming more popular in the United States. Many people propose changing the system from operating on a ten-month calendar to a “year round education.” In this system, schools continue with the one hundred and eighty days per year, but the days are stretched out and the students are given shorter breaks in between. The most common form of year round education is the forty-five to fifteen plan. This plan is where the students attend school for forty-five days and for three weeks, or fifteen days, they take a break from school.
Hillary Clinton, the Democratic National Committee’s candidate for President of the United States in 2016, ran in alignment with the DNC’s 2016 platform. Her focus was on improving the Affordable Care Act, expanding women’s rights, raising middle class incomes, and campaign finance reform. In response to the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision, which enabled unlimited campaign finance contributions, Clinton guaranteed a constitutional amendment overturning Citizens United. Clinton’s economic plan would have penalized corporations involved in moving jobs overseas by rescinding their tax benefits, incentivized profit sharing models for employees, environment and communities, placed an exit tax on corporations that moved their
Liberal education is not something that is not defined easily. There are various different aspects of liberal education that make it what it is. Part of the liberal education classes that Grand Valley offers work to help students understand and define liberal education better. Not only that, but liberal education helps make students what they are today. Through out the various readings, exercises, and various forms of expression, our liberal education class has helped shape the idea of liberal education and how we, and a university can use it to better enhance our experiences in our daily lives.
I have chosen to write this essay about homeschooling. Homeschooling is one option for schooling children, along with public and private schools. Many people do not believe in homeschooling because they do not trust that parents are teaching their children correctly. They argue that parents can’t teach their children without proper training and that without it. They also worry that students will not learn to socialize or function in society and that homeschooling is just a way to hide children from the real world. A lot of people fear homeschooling because they do not know very much about that form of education. On the other hand many peoples opinion is that homeschooling has many benefits and that it gives
This will help promote my side of the argument so that my side will be the superior argument and will attract more readers. I think kids should have less homework.Three reasons are, that homework is stressful, kids are given more homework than required, and it puts pressure on students causing them to work to hard and and have anxiety and health issues.
Before, the education system used to have the best interest of children but instead it seems as if the professionals who work for the system cares more about the job qualifications than the true value of education and how well the people are attaining it. Public education uses to led the road to success, but after going through thirteen years of it and seeing what the public education system is all about, people have come to realize that it only affect others later on in life negatively.
A liberal arts education is not something everyone thinks of as valuable. An education in liberal arts is about developing abilities and a broader understanding of intellectual ideas, instead of focusing on specific skills. Although people generally believe that liberal arts only focuses on subjects such as, literature, philosophy, languages, or even topics like history, it is much more diverse and applicable to real life than educational programs that focus on specific skill sets. Liberal Arts provides more than just a degree, it is the basis for education itself. It teaches many skills such as comprehension, evaluation, analysis, and communication. Without these skills we as individuals would not be able to understand, communicate, or reason with not only ourselves but other people. Accumulating information and understanding it would not be possible without comprehension skills, and without the other skills we would not be able to communicate efficiently. Liberal arts is founded upon the basic skills humanity needs in order to run efficiently. Liberal arts educations only emphasize this point and in and of themselves show why a liberal arts education is necessary. However one of the
