The trade off between liberty and security is a very difficult topic due to the fact that many people want to have both to the full extent without giving up anything for one or the other. Personally, I prefer to have liberty over security any day. In my opinion, it is a case of the foot in the door phenomenon because if we give up small liberties here and there, then eventually we will be giving up non-negotiable rights. For example, with gun laws and the recent shooting. Policeman are sworn to protect and for many people, they aren't complying and as a result people, mainly liberals, are protesting to push for new legislation in Congress. However, conservatives are saying that that would infringe upon their civil liberties and are unwilling
In her essay “We should relinquish some liberty in exchange for security,” Mona Charen, a columnist and political analyst, speaks on the issue of security in the United States of America. She uses many significant techniques in her essay to persuade her readers of her argument. However, I feel that her essay fails to make a great argument because she relies heavily on assumptions, misses opportunities to appeal to pathos and ethos, and overall uses a degrading tone.
For hundreds of years Americans have been growing up with the notion that it is a right to own a gun. Since the creation of the second amendment, people all over the United States have been able to guns for private use. Guns operated by the public are said to have a variety of uses such as, being able to protect oneself if conflict arises, grants the ability to put food on the table, and are used in competitions shooting targets against other people. But for many people guns have been seen as the root of all evil. Anti-gun users think that guns cause a variety of unexpected and innocent deaths. They also think that there are not enough laws in place that allow just about anyone to purchase a gun. The question of should guns be legal to all citizens has plagued our society. Do you think it is morally right for anyone to arm themselves and use it when they deem it to be necessary? Or do you think that the 2rd amendment seem unnecessary and outdated law that needs to be rewritten? These questions are just two of many that have thrown back and forth between pro-gun and anti-gun users.
Left, right, Liberal, Conservative, Democratic, Republican. There are a lot of synonyms for the sides of our nation divided. Divided on many things: religion, political views, morals, etc.. For a nation that prides ourselves on extraordinary security and unity, it is quite ironic that so many issues can cause such distress and uproar within communities. One such issue is gun control. As a white male in a middle-lower class family that has never owned a gun, I may be somewhat biased. Objectively as I can, I am going to report the facts and more importantly, try to find the core issues at play.
Everyday we have the chance to make her own opinions and give reason to our own voice. We have the chance to live in a country that encourages freedom in society, which separate ourselves from any restrictions imposed upon by authority, actions or any political views. liberty is the power we possess to act as we please through freedom and independence. But what happens when we choose to give away our basic liberties for temporary safety? Benjamin Franklin once stated, “They who give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Those who decide to give away their personal freedoms for something that is temporary do not see the value in the long-lasting gift called freedom. In
Being a young American I have witnessed many problems with growing up in this great country of ours. We have homeless people who can't find work, rising inflation rates, an unbalanced budget, and more importantly, a problem with guns.
If a person don’t carry a concealed weapon, how will they be able to protect themselves and their precious family from vicious criminals? Shall issue states are states that citizens may apply and be considered by the state for a gun permit which is also known as concealed carry. John R. Lott, is an economist and has received his Ph.D. in economics from UCLA. He claimed "shall-issue" concealed carry laws reduced murders by 8.5%, rapes by 5%, aggravated assaults by 7%, and robbery by 3%, according to a 2000 analysis of FBI crime data” (Lott, John R.) This refers to how concealed carry reduces crime and information was reported by the FBI compared to the other states that don’t allow concealed carry. This quote shows real evidence on how guns
I want to prevent would-be killers from having access to weapons of war. I want to stop them from teaching themselves to kill through video games. I want mental-health services to be more easily obtained. And I want to deny murderers the notoriety they seek. Our leaders must attack the entire problem--and if they do, I believe my fellow gun owners will have their back.(P. 10)
Amongst the growing number of reports of school shootings in the United States, the question that continues to be asked remains a controversial issue that is heavily discussed. On one side of the argument are many gun owners, or gun activists, who insist that a looser gun control law is the solution, while on the other are the pro-gun control activists who call for a stricter law to help mitigate the increasing problem. Although people believe it would be safer if others were allowed to carry guns, concealed or otherwise, the truth is that a better gun control law would be more effective. While this is a controversial topic that leads people to develop strong opinions, it would serve well to get a sense of what people think about their stance on the issue as well as the defense and reasoning each side utilize and why in order to thoroughly disprove the former idea. Still a main component that fuels gun activist are concerns regarding constitutional rights but these concerns should not be where the topic focuses. There are also many doubts as to how effective gun control would be considering that quite a few fear that the lack of ease in owning
I do think that freedom needs to be won more than once. It shouldn’t need to though. Our founding fathers wrote the Constitution which have our freedoms, the 10 amendments. Our soldiers even fought for our freedom. America isn’t free anymore. My dad’s friend’s friend said that he is from South Africa and they have more freedom than we do.
There are a number of reasons why this freedom needs to be protected. The number one and most important is to keep the individuality of the American people from becoming controlled by the Government.
Libertarianism is a theory of justice that focuses on making sure people can do what they want with their property as long as it doesn’t interfere with someone else’s ability to do what they want (Sandel 59-60). To work, libertarianism is based off the idea that humans have basic rights, such as Locke’s rights to life, liberty, and property, or the Jeffersonian substitute of property for pursuit of happiness. Essentially, libertarianism wants to make sure the government does not interfere with said rights unless it is absolutely necessary and in the utmost minimalistic way possible. This means libertarians oppose laws to protect people from themselves, instilling of certain virtues, and redistribution of wealth (Sandel 60). For example, libertarians would oppose seatbelt laws, students being forced to say the pledge of allegiance, and a progressive tax plan for the reasons above, respectively.
Many people think that guns should be banned/under control. This is wrong, would you ever blame a spelling mistake on your pencil? No, you would blame it on yourself because you are the one who did it. The same goes with guns, killing someone is more extreme than a spelling mistake, but it is the same kind of context. People kill other people using guns, guns don’t control themselves, it’s the person who pulls the trigger that is doing the controlling.
For years, people have been at odds with the topic Eternal Security. Many believe that a person can lose his or her salvation while others believe a person cannot. The topic has frustrated the hearts of many people in the past as well as in the present. Eternal Security is a controversial topic that people have studied and debated for years. Many people do not believe in “once save always saved.” Some believe that people receive salvation, but they also believe they can lose their salvation. In other words, they believe there are conditions to maintain salvation.
The right to Life, Liberty, and Security, is one of the most important citizen rights that you can have. With the right to life, it means that any individual has the right to live, and shouldn’t be killed by anyone. With the right to Liberty, it means that we have the right to be free, and do almost anything we want. Lastly, the right to security means that you are guaranteed to be protected the best way possible, while you are in that country. Even though it is just one of many rights, they all fall under the right to freedom. Which everyone just wants the right to do what they want, and to stand up for what they believe in. Everyone should have the right to freedom, as well as the right to life, liberty, and security. We felt that this right was the most important because it summed up the rights that we need as citizens. Like the right to not be enslaved, can count as the right to Life and Liberty. So in our opinion, the right to Life, Liberty, and Security, is the one that should be one of the first applied rights to our lives. The next few paragraphs will describe how we feel on these particular rights, as well as examples of how these rights are being violated all over the world.
