Carter Jones Ms. Cowles English 9 April 18 2024. The Tommy Gun It is a 1918. The Great War (WW1) is coming to an end, but nonetheless, there are still plenty of conflicts (warfare) continuing, and many American soldiers are dying. Most blame the high number of deaths on the poor rifles used by them in combat. John T. Thompson, an ex-army soldier, was an advocate for the use of Semi-Automatics, so he started working on a new weapon for these soldiers to help them win in combat. And on June 13, 1921, the most infamous firearm (Gun) of all time was introduced to the world, the Thompson Submachine (Gun), more commonly known as the Tommy gun, for its use by both good and bad forces. Overall, while the gun was invented for the U.S. military to use in WW1, it wasn't able to be shipped out quickly enough to be used. However, the guns were famous for another reason, gangs. (warfare). Criminals like Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly were infamous outlaws who adopted the gun as their own, helping them take over the crime world in their favor. One of the reasons the guns were so popular with these thugs (gangsters) was because they were widely available. According to HeinOnline, “Al Capone went to a local hardware store and ordered 3 of these weapons.” Since the weapon (gun) was so easily accessible and all over the place, they were favorites for the criminals (gangsters). The violence in big towns, namely Chicago, and the worry of the civilians was capped off by the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre on St. Valentine’s Day in 1929.
