In Roseburg, Oregon at Umpqua Community College a deranged and furious gun-man shot and killed nine people, along with injuring nine others who remain in the hospital at this time. The school shooting that took place yesterday is just another tragic and devastating reason for schools to implement more security into their facilities. Many people argue that we need more gun-control into our society. However, owning a gun is a Second Amendment Right as a citizen of The United States. Mental health screenings and thorough background checks are essential for the safety of all people. The government should focus on safety procedures for gun licensing, instead of debating back and forth over gun control.
Horrific school shootings stun and scare the nation people begin to question, “What if this happened at my child’s school?” Following the panic, comes with frivolous debates from pro and anti-gun-control activists and a few months later, another tragic school shooting takes place. While both sides have powerful and strong arguments on the controversial topic, cooperation and negotiation are the key components to finding a solution to the issue. An overwhelming amount of arguments have been circulating throughout our small town in the past twenty four hours, a huge argument is the government needs to implement stricter mental health screening laws for gun ownership. The alarming fact is, even when individuals do undergo a background check in order to buy a gun in this country, the screening process to obtain mental health history is cursory at best. As of 2015, Americans can buy firearms through “private sales” in more than 40 states across the country, avoiding any type of mental health screening or questioning.
