Assisted suicide is a necessary worldwide implementation so that people everywhere can have a sense of security when they fall ill with an incurable disease, where they can be comforted with the thought of having that choice to simply end it all and not have to suffer through everything anymore. When one no longer feels as though they are human and see no purpose to life anymore because of the constant pain and humiliation they are forced through, they should have the ability to end their suffering. Terminally ill patients have long lasting, painful deaths and they should have the option of assisted suicide so they don’t have to go through that. The doctor can’t administer them himself, that would be euthanasia, the patients has to take them him or herself (Engber). Concern that assisted suicide allowed on the basis of mercy or compassion, can and will lead to the urging of the death for morally unjustifiable reasons is understandable. However, legalization can serve to prevent the already existent practice of underground physician-assisted suicide if strict laws to ensure that the interests of the patients are primary are installed and enforced. When a patient asks for assistance in dying, their wishes should be respected as long as the patient is free from coercion and competent enough to give informed consent. The intent of this work is to examine the legalization of assisted suicide in Oregon and the Netherlands and to argue that assisted suicide is morally and ethically acceptable in theory despite some unintended consequences of its implementation.
