The Dilemma of Gun Control There will always be controversy in a nation that has a population of over 300 million, but gun control seems to slide into news coverage often. Recently, in Florida, a gunman used an AR-15 to shoot and kill 17 people, 14 of which were students. Prior to that, in Oregon, 10 people were killed in a shooting that took place in Umpqua Community College. It has become apparent that something must change to stop more lives from being lost, but there is a question that the lawmakers of America need to answer first: how can the shootings be stopped while letting the people keep their rights to bear arms? This paper has previously stated that this would not work, because of all the other factors that plays into the violence, such as mental illnesses, drugs, self-made weaponry, and loopholes found inside of laws. There is still another factor that has not been addressed, however: illegal purchases of guns. “Straw purchases”, which account for a portion of crime guns in Southern California, are when one person who either wants a gun and cannot get one legally, or would rather buy one anonymously, has someone else buy a purchase a gun for them. Straw purchases are classified as illegal, because the new owner is often prohibited from buying or owning guns, and the guns cannot be traced back to the user. Illegal purchases of guns may also happen between a criminal and a fully licensed yet corrupt gun dealer. The dealer, though he knows it’s illegal, will still sometimes sell guns to people who aren’t legally allowed to purchase guns. The last major source of illegal gun purchases are purchases from unlicensed gun dealers. These guns originally come from straw purchases, illegal purchases from a licensed dealer, or thefts. All three of these illegal gun purchasing methods make up the majority of illegal firearms ownership, and infiltrate even states like California, which has the strongest gun restrictions of the fifty
