Many of my peers have told me that their parents pay them a dollar for every A that they receive on their report card. That concept of paying students for high grades has spread across the nations. Schools now use cash to motivate students to do well in school. Though yes, this is effective, but is it right? Has this truly benefited the students as much as we think it does? The answer to both questions is no. It takes away a child’s natural desire to learn, it doesn’t work out in the long run, and it ruins teacher-student relationships. Psychologists Bob Brooks and Sam Goldstein state that, “External factors may be effective and well intended, but the clearly works against the development of a child’s natural intrinsic motivation.”This means that instead of the feeling of of satisfaction and pride when a student receives grades, they receive cash. This leads to students having the mindset that their work can only be valued with materialistic things, such as money. A school for students then becomes a place of business, and not as a place to learn and grow. (As it should be.) Eventually, students might deny certain opportunities such as volunteer work, or something to do with their passion because it won’t involve money. On the flip side, it can also result in students actively participating in dangerous and illegal work, because cash is involved. In summation, it takes away a child’s natural intrinsic motivation. In addition, paying for grades, creates conflict. The Ne Article states, “Many teachers also say paying students for high grades, creates conflict between students and teachers.” Those who aren’t paid for high grades may start to feel resentment towards their teachers. This produces tension in classrooms. This could ruin possible teacher student relationships. Which leaves students with a negative outlook on school and certain classes later on. In “Grades and Money,” Steven Vogel makes it clear that he is disappointed and frustrated with what grades have become. He believes that grades have become commoditized and that students’ grades suffer because of their relation with money. Vogel also believes that students no longer take any risk with their education. I agree with Vogel that grades are being equated to money by students, that students’ work suffers because of grades, and that students no longer take risks in their educational process.
Students brought up in a system of incentives get accustomed working for grades. So yes. It works for many students to motivate work. But if "working" means learning, these external incentives teach the students the wrong thing to aim at, the wrong reason for doing it, and often the wrong way to do it. If we are hoping our students will be life-long learners, why would they continue learn in the grade-less post-graduation world? (Schwartz, 2011)
In a world in which a person is not compensated for his work, he would no longer work as diligently. Often times, a person will work in order to receive a reward. This reward then helps him to gain more rewards in the future. This can be seen in a game of rummy when a player must play each hand carefully in order to benefit himself in later hands. This is precisely what occurs when students receive GPAs that have been weighted; so, as a result of the extensive amount of work required to receive the same grade in an Advanced Placement (AP) course as in a base level course, the students of Saint Bernard deserve to benefit from a more accurate representation of and award for their work: weighted GPAs.

Every year thousands of students attend a college or university, usually of their choice, with the goal of achieving a higher education and to better their future. The cost of attending college is too high and it needs to go down; there needs to be more scholarship and grant opportunities. The high cost of attending college is a major reason that students aren’t able to achieve higher education; others take this as a challenge and it is motivation for them to work harder to achieve their goal. The rising cost has many benefits such as earning more pay, but it also has its disadvantages such as the debt that is accumulated from student loans. Not everyone can afford to drop down thousands of dollars and attend school for a few more years. Students who wish to receive a post-secondary education must decide whether it is the right choice for them depending on their financial standpoint, meaning that they must decide if they have the resources to further their education.
As of today’s generation, it is significant for everyone to attend college because it will impact the future. Nowadays, students are struggling towards paying their college tuition. All the students rush out the door as the school bell rings, taking out their extravagant and expensive phones. Everyone leaves, and just by the sight of the empty hallway, there are calculators, textbooks and more electronics that are worth a great amount of money. Students are not responsible for their belongings. In fact, they are not responsible at all, losing them, leaving them in the hallways and change rooms unattended, dropping them. They will never entirely understand the value and responsibility that is put forth for them to have that phone. However, they would understand if the phone was bought with their own money. School can be frustrating for students. Going to school, doing homework, and then repeating it all over again the next day can become quite tedious. Especially when one feels as if they are not gaining anything from doing well in school, it causes students to have very little motivation to complete their schoolwork. Students might be motivated if there was some sort of incentive for attending school and doing well at it. A law should be passed that requires students to be paid for doing well in school because it gives them motivation, helps them with financial issues, and allows them to learn how to manage money more effectively.
