The Columbus Day holiday should not be replaced with Indigenous People Day. In the year of 1492, a man under the name of Christopher Columbus set out to find India. Instead of the planned trip, he sailed 4,285 miles and came to a foreign land; a land we now call America. However, a controversy has arose from this story. Because of Columbus, thousands of millions of people suffered and died (Lassitter). Many people blame him for the death of these people, and for never actually finding North America, as many said he did (Long). Columbus Day recognizes the achievements of a great Renaissance explorer who founded the first permanent European settlement in the New World (Kern). The arrival of Columbus in 1492 marks the beginning of recorded history in America and opened relations between the Americas and the rest of the world.

Columbus played a big part in changing history. He led the way for future colonists to settle the United States (Brown). Without Columbus, the age of exploration would not have been inspired in the way that it was, it has a vital place in American history (Kern). Columbus was a product of his time (Lassitter). He was also a great explorer, an intrepid adventurer, a man of fervent faith and a defiant leader who blazed a path to the modern world (Brown). His admirable traits allowed him to rise above his human imperfections (Kern). In what has become known as the Columbian Exchange, Columbus’ voyages enabled the exchange of plants, animals, cultures, ideas (and, yes, disease) between the Western and Eastern Hemispheres (Long). Without Columbus’s discoveries, where would it leave humanity? Though it has its controversies, Columbus Day should be celebrated (Long). Without him, the modern world would not be the way it is today. Sure, he went the wrong way with power, but some of the greatest achievements came from mistakes
The credit for this change of view can be given to Washington Irving, who wrote a biography based on Columbus in 1828. This biography romanticized him and gave people the idea that he was this courageous hero who despite people’s claims that he’ll never succeed, ended up discovering what lies past the Atlantic. This biography gathered the momentum needed to catapult the collective opinion of Columbus higher in America. As time passed, more biographers wrote about him which resulted in groups forming, particularly the Knights of Columbus. They’re the group that pressed for a nationally recognized Columbus Day, which passed in
Columbus Day was not always a federal holiday. Traditionally, the holiday was observed on the 12th of October locally. Columbus Day first became a holiday in Colorado in 1906. Through lobbying by Angelo Rose, Generoso Pope, and The Knights of Columbus, Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1937. It was signed in by Franklin Roosevelt. Since 1970, the holiday has been observed on the second Monday of October. Columbus Day had lobbying against it as well. During the early days before information was not easily available, it was said that the holiday would be used to spread Catholic influence. In later years during the Information Age, arguments such as Columbus 's character or the genocide and slavery of the Indians became widespread arguments against the celebration of the holiday. There are also many arguments as to why the holiday should be kept. Columbus 's voyages led to the colonization of the New World. His expeditions spurred the Age of Exploration, where many European countries continued to invest in exploring for shorter and faster routes to India and the Orient, and new territories to claim. His voyages also led to the Columbian
Christopher Columbus does not deserve to be honored as a hero with his own holiday. Close to 500 years, people have praised Christopher Columbus and also celebrated him as though he was the one who truly founded America. Teachers teach students that he was a great man, also how he found treasures and land known as America. Students are also taught about the names of his three ships he used on his first voyage. However, they did not teach us the truth about Christopher Columbus, and his so called “discovery”.
The name of the article is PRO/CON: Should we celebrate Christopher Columbus? It was made By Silvio Laccetti, McClatchy Tribune, and Los Angeles Times Editorial Board adapted Newsela staff. On 10/06/2017. There are monuments and teachers that are being destroyed. Many people died during Columbus time and when people think of Colombes they think of all the people that he killed. There are parks playgrounds and schools that tribute Christopher Columbus. The article says we should the accomplishment he made. The Los Angeles California City Council have joined with other cities to replace Columbus Day with a holiday called Indigenous Peoples Day. because of the controversy of Columbus, a lot of people
Christopher Columbus was a European explorer who a more fitting title would be a conqueror. He didn't discover anything as the common believe would say, rather he conquered already inhabited land. Christopher Columbus "exploration" had a bunch of direct and indirect effects. The exploration sponsored by the King and Queen of Spain had direct effects such as giving Spain control over new land and giving Christopher Columbus the fame he so desired, furthermore the so-called exploration also had some indirect effects such as allowing other nations to sail West and it also affected the Natives and increased the slave trade.
Although, Columbus may have done some bad things to America, he helped England, Spain, and all people to this day. When he discovered America he made it known, allowing people to travel there and begin a new life. Lots of countries honor Columbus, especially Spain. For his discovery we wouldn’t be where we are now, we might have still believed the world was flat. From the author of “Sail On!” he says “Columbus’ voyage made America known to the people of Europe. This truly changed the world. It is why Columbus is honored.”He will be honored for the good things we don’t need to ponder on the
One reason we shouldn’t celebrate Columbus Day is because he enslaved Natives to have them work. The text states,”The aim was clear: slaves and gold. They went from island to island in the Caribbean, capturing Indians,”(page 8
Many Americans honor Christopher Columbus Day as a holiday that celebrates his discovery of the New World on October 12, 1492. Some make the argument that Columbus is not to be considered a hero because of his actions. However, this day celebrates his discovery but not his mistakes after. His findings brought new knowledge to the Old World, profited many countries, and improved life conditions of many people. Before his voyage some thought if sailing West all one would find is India, however Columbus’ expedition found
...us brought America to the attention of the civilized world, to the growing, scientific civilizations of Western Europe. The result, ultimately, was the United States of America. It was Columbus’ discovery for Western Europe that led to the arrival of ideas and people on which this nation was founded on. The voyages of Christopher Columbus contain one of the great adventure stories of all time. His first journey across thousands of miles of unknown ocean, in the middle of the rebellious grievances and tensions of his crew, was not only one of the most significant achievements of recorded human history, but was also a demonstration of Columbus's dominance as mariner and navigator. For a while he had faults and defects, which brought turmoil to his personal life, but there was no flaw, no dark side to the most significant of all his qualities, of course his seamanship.
The explorer Christopher Columbus made four trips across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain: in 1492, 1493, 1498 and 1502. He was determined to find a direct water route west from Europe to Asia, but he never did. Instead, he accidentally stumbled upon the Americas. Though he did not really discover The New World millions of people already lived there his journeys marked the beginning of centuries of Atlantic conquest and colonization. However there has been some controversy whether or not Columbus is a hero or not because of some of his actions he took;” one hundred years after his landing in America, Europeans exploration, and exploitation, resulted in the deaths of 90 million indigenous peoples. His own diaries detail the horrible atrocities committed seemingly at his behest” (lecture handout). In terms of celebration I say it we should not because we are celebrating all the actions he took; The Killing of many natives, the creation of slavery, and mistreatment of his own people. Columbus is basically label as a tyrant. Instead Columbus Day should instead be celebrated as Indigenous day. A day of remembrance to all the people that suffer under Columbus
In the United States, holidays are celebrated because they are deemed important by the national government. Christmas, the Fourth of July, and President’s Day are all dates that have a profound impact on American lives and our country’s history. Despite the hostile feelings felt by some citizens, Columbus Day represents the day our nation’s modern society truly began, the time of exploration (intro of a world trade economy?), and it recognizes the heritage of thousands of Italian immigrants, and therefore, should be celebrated.
Growing up, most children are taught how Christopher Columbus was the discoverer of the New World and how without him we wouldn’t have the world we are in today. We have a national holiday in honor of him. We celebrate his life through most of our juvenile years. Over the last century, questions have been popping up regarding this man known to be one of the most popular men to have walked the earth. People of all ages have discussed for ages as to whether Christopher Columbus is a great explorer or a mass murderer.
Columbus day is one of the oldest and most traditional holiday in American history. However, many people do not know what they are celebrating. America should not continue to celebrate Columbus Day because of the cruelty Columbus brought to the natives, his legacy, and achievements. Columbus Day is unreasonably celebrated because he brought the terrible act of the raping of native women, hunting of people with dogs, and harsh punishments. Moreover, it should stop being celebrated as Columbus also created the opportunity for the spread of diseases, slavery, and death. Additionally, some of his achievements that are celebrated such as: the discovery of the new world, his theory of the earth's shape, and establishing contact with the new world
The big controversy behind the idea that Christopher Columbus discovered America is that for one, natives already lived there and we also have evidence that a viking named Leif Eriksson discovered the Americas long before Columbus. It’s not certain who exactly discovered America but it is known that people such as Eriksson and even a chinese explorer Zheng He landed on the shores of the americas hundreds of years before Columbus had. After the “Discovery” , the land mass we know as the Americas now was actually named after the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. In my opinion, we shouldn’t celebrate Columbus day mainly for the reason he was a terrible person who led to the deaths of many natives and thought they were animals. Instead, I think
In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue. We have been taught this saying ever since grade school to remember what the “wonderful” Christopher Columbus had done. In our history we notice him as a hero, the great one who found this terrific piece of land we live on and now call North America? What our history books like to leave out about the “great” Christopher Columbus is the part of history where he raped, and enslaved hundreds of Native Americans. Since then Native Americans have been marginalized and pushed around even though they have done so much for America. All their work and contributions are forgotten in our uneducated minds, the time has come to start appreciating all that they have done for us. So let me start over. In
