It’s the beginning of a new month. Everyone is getting paid like they do every first of the month. A woman is sitting next to a man in the office as they open their pay stubs. They are both employed by the same person with the same job title. They do an equal amount of work, but she is a woman. She looks over as he opens his pay stub and sees that he’s getting paid $15,000 more than her. This is an example of the wage gap. She is getting paid 75 cents to every dollar the man makes.
The wage gap for the year of 2017 varies from just 12% to almost 45%. Averaged out, women get paid about 80 cents to every man’s dollar. Depending on the field of work, women do not get the pay they deserve. Women have taken a big step in the right direction since the time women could not work, but the amount of money women make should be even with men at the time. In 2017, men should make no more than women. The wage gap is the difference between men and women’s pay. The workplace should not be sexist. This will get better by carrying out the terms of the Lilly Ledbetter Act, the Equal Rights Amendment, and the Paycheck Fairness Act. The government should enforce laws to make women’s work life better for them and their family.

Although we like to comfort ourselves with the idea that we have gotten our rightfully earned rights, we had not been given bathroom breaks until 1998. Furthermore, employees are still afraid to have a voice in the workforce. Employers establish rules that let laborers know that they are inferior.

It is proven women are paid less than the same job performed by others. This creates women to lose their self esteem and self confidence. With unequal pay, especially for women, this causes less buying power and less savings for the future. The message, then and now, is so powerful that when people hear it they begin to take action. For example, the California Fair Pay Act, authored by state Sen. It happens when a man and a woman standing next to each other doing the same job for the same number of hours get paid different salaries. On average, full-time working- women earn just “77 cents for every dollar a man earn.” When you compare a woman and a man doing the same job, “the pay gap narrows to 81 percent (81%)” (Rosin). Fifty-one years ago, in order to stop the gender gap discrimination, Congress enacted the Equal Pay Act of 1963. The act states that all women should receive “equal pay for equal work”. Unfortunately, even in 2014 the gender pay gap persists and even at the highest echelons of the corporate; therefore, the equal pay act is a failure.

Today, women are depended on just as much as men, and are capable of performing at their level. However, a full-time working woman earns only seventy-seven cents for every dollar a man makes.
