To Dye For
There are many different types of dyes, artificial dyes are the most common especially in America. Unfortunately, children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are sensitive to most artificial food dye. Food dye is popular in children’s food like cereal, fruit juice, and candy. Children consuming these foods will start to affect hyperactivity at a young age.
Added unnatural food dye is an inconvenience to people with allergic reactions to certain food dye. Most people who are allegic to food dye can’t drink bright colored beverages due to high amounts of artificial food coloring. Same thing goes with food. If companies would switch to natural dyes then more consumers would be able to purchase such snack food. Also

with such a simple thing such as dye is not the first thing that comes to mind when you have an allergic reaction. Most people assume that the food itself is making them have reactions. People everywhere aren’t aware they are alleric to dyes that can be found in anything. Everyday a boy the age of seven, wakes up and eats his breakfast cereal and goes to school. During the day he eats a healthy planned lunch the school gives him, a pack of fruit snacks when he gets home and then dinner his own mother prepared. Nothing is wrong with this child’s diet but he is unknowingly consuming an excess of artificial food dye. People aren’t aware of how dye can effect a child’s hyperactivity and cause allergic reactions to an average person. This is why consumers aren’t more considering of what they are consuming or giving children. Artificial food dye is an unknown danger to the health of people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, allergens, and in general the human population. The United States has nine artificial food dyes approved by the food and drug administration (FDA) these dyes are popularly used in food such as soda, fruit drinks and other beverages. Artificial food dye is most commonly used in candy and in almost all snack foods. The most common dyes used are Red # 40, Yellow # 5, and Blue #1. These foods have a small portion of food dye added to batches that the FDA has approved of, which we consume every day. (Stevens) With the amount of food American’s consume the small portions of unnatural food dye, which shows little to no responses in test groups, soon unknowingly becomes a larger amount and the test groups of children with ADHD react to the dye due to sensitivity in hyperactivity. This was not a concern until Purave University reported that it would not be difficult for a child to consume 100 mg or more a day which is enough for allergic reactions or reactions with sensitivity in learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder. (Stevens) The reason behind artificial food dye is unnecessary compared to the side effects of allergic reactions and harmful chemicals children are consuming every day.
That’s why 364,000 consumers signed a petition for Kraft to remove such artificial food coloring from their products such as Yellow #5, and Yellow #6. Now Kraft colors their food with natural dyes such as paprika, annatto and turmeric. Annatto is a popular natural food dye, Nestle will soon be changing the inside of their Butterfinger which will be dyed with annatto. This natural dye is made from the seeds of the achiote tree, which proves there are natural alternatives to artificial food dye. …show more content…
(Stevens) Although natural food dye will change the food color it will not preserve food with a longer shelf life that artificial food dye achieves. Artificial food dye (AFD) standardizes the color that might change due to heat, acidity, processing and storage might change. Food coloring gives food that popular look towards it and attracts consumers. Most people are enticed with products such as mountain dew due to its bright yellow color. That is only achieved with artificial food dye. (Stevens) Artificial food dye is also cheaper than natural food dye and it is also easier to blend into food making process faster and less expensive.
These synthetic dyes are preferred more than any other dye by companies for the intensity of brightness of color and the uniformity it gives the food unlike some natural dyes would give. These dyes are derived from other food like grapes, potent fruit, spices like saffron, paprika and vegetables like carrots, beets and algae. Of course the natual dyes can also cause a discussion if they are safe or not. In 1998 some natural food dyes were made out of female beetles to replace unnatural red dye. (stevens, Beil)
It is not impossible for big companies to go natural, other countries such as great Britten have been dying soda such as Fanta orange with pumpkin and carrots. America on the other hand dyes Fanta orange with # Red 40 and # Yellow 6. Great Britten not only uses natural ingredients, they also don’t use added dyes to some food in large companies. McDonalds in great Britten does not even use dye for strawberries on their sundaes while America uses # Red 40 in their Strawberries mixtures.
(stevens) It is proven to be unnecessary for added dye in food, yet the United States of America and other countries continue to add chemicals to food and beverages that will cause hyperactivity and allergies in our children. Currently the United States dips oranges and other natural fruit in artificial dye just for appearance and looks. In some parts of the country like in Washington DC the Center for Science in the public interest of DC in 2008 petitioned the food and drug administration (FDA) to ban artificial food dyes because of the connection to behavioral problems in young children. Not only the states are changing how dye should be presented but in Europe as of July 2010, most food and beverages that contain artificial dye must have a warning label that the dyes could cause hyperactivity in children. (Stevens, potera)
Modern technology has made the phrase “every color in the rainbow” old-fashioned. Chemists are making colors available that would stagger the old masters. From impossible pinks and greens to metallic and iridescent, the color choices are incredible. It would take a very generous budget to purchase all the hues available.
Today, millions of animals are captured in cold laboratories feared to be tested on once again across the country. Imagine living a life with constant pain, ache and loneliness, and to dream about roaming free. I believe animals should not be tested on for products because all living things should be treated humanely, there are other ways to test products, and millions of animals are put to their death because of the labs.
9). Toselli noted that Egyptian women used henna to color their nails (2009). The most notable color used to paint their nails was red. However, the color red was reserved for women of power. One example of such women, is Cleopatra, who “…favored a deep rust red” (Toselli, p.9). Women of lower stations “…were permitted only pale hues” (Toselli, p.9). Pales hues refers to light colors. Over the years different ingredients were utilized to create nail stain, varnish all otherwise known as nail polish. According to Toselli, the mixture of Arabic gum, egg whites, gelatin, and beeswax was used by the Chinese. “They also used a mixture of pulped rose for color, or orchid and impatiens petals combined with alum, which, when applied to mails overnight, left a pinkish, reddish stain” (Toselli, p.9). Eventually, ingredients included: scented red oils, powders and creams. It was by accident that it was discovered that “…boiling nitrocellulose made it soluble in organic
“In 1938, there was an Act passed, the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, by the government that enforced regulations on food coloring, according to Nicole Feretich from Penn State University “the red dye (Red 40 in most cases) can actually be harmful to one’s health”. It’s been said that the dye itself has been known to cause cancer”, anyhow Adams decided that red velvet was going to be his big ticket to the bank, and a great market to be in and started selling extracts.” I read that you can still today find the mix from the company in its old vintage packaging. There was also the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City who also made claims that it was the birthplace of the Red Velvet cake, as it was a popular menu item in the 1950s but there has been an ongoing argument from some southerners who will argue that the Red Velvet cake originated in the south. I couldn’t find a clear answer to where and when Red Velvet Cake really originated, but we do know that somewhere between the 1920s and the 1950s, Red Velvet became very popular in the United States. Traditionally Red Velvet cake is a red colored, layer cake with cream cheese icing. The cake has a fluffy texture which is from the gas that is produced from the reaction of alkaline buttermilk with acidic vinegar and/or acidic
Food coloring is typically used in food and drink products. Another term used for food coloring is artificial color. It is added to give the product a certain colored appearance. Food coloring can come as a gel, paste, liquid, or powder. Food coloring contains various chemicals but is often based from petroleum
Hank Cardello, a former food executive, expresses the idea that grocers and other food executives do not have your best interest in mind in “What Grocers Don’t Want You to Know.” Cardello states that grocers set up supermarkets “like taking a choreographed tour through Disney World”(30). Getting to all of the products you want is easier than ever, but getting what you need has proven more difficult. During my own field research, I had discovered that getting the bare necessities (i.e. milk or even bread) were the hardest items to find in the supermarket I visited. It was even harder to find the truly organic form of these products. Why is it so hard to find something healthy in the food market? This is due to the subsidizing of these large food companies and them teaming with grocers to sell their products. Although it is hard to find these natural products, it is possible. Larger food companies use a lot of things to keep their items on the shelf. Preservatives are commonly found in these unhealthy products. Vileisis states in another chapter “Rise of the Modern Food Sensibility” that throughout history these preservatives have proven to be harmful. In one study she covers Harvey Wiley, a member of the U.S. Bureau of Chemistry, discovers that in 1904 that many preservatives, are harmful to our kidneys and livers (126-28). This can cause many
About 10,000 diverse species of pigments and dyes are used in industries, which show that an annual use of almost 7×105 tonnes in world. Dyes are intractable and toxic materials, they oppose biological breakdown (Souza et al., 2007).
Chemistry is also beneficial in studying the chemical construction of hair dye and therefore learning how and why it works. The first safe commercial hair color was created in 1909 by French chemist Eugene Schuller, using the chemical paraphenylenediamine.
With the expansion of technology available to the textile industry emerged a growing want among those who produced the textiles for new colors. When this problem arose, textile producers called upon the chemistry industry to help lessen the need for textile producers to rely upon natural methods of bleaching such as sun, rain, sour milk, and urine (Britannica). While these methods had been practiced for centuries, the industry saw a definite want for a new and more efficient method of bleaching. From this point forth, chemistry’s role in the Industrial Revolution not only led to innovations in bleaching, but also led to great changes in the practice of chemistry, as we know it. In the mid-1700’s, a chemist named John Roebuck solved the problems of the textile industry with his invention of a new method for mass producing a chemical by-product known as sulfuric acid in lead chambers (Encarta 97). This discovery paved the way for sulfuric acid’s use in bleaching, and eventually led to the production of chlorine bleach, a common household product today.
Food has been a common source of necessity in our everyday lives as humans. It helps gives us nutrition and energy to live throughout our life. Over several decades, the development of making foods has evolved. They have changed from natural to processed foods in recent years. Nowadays natural ingredients are barely used in the making of foods like bread, cheese, or yogurt. The food industry today has replaced natural food making with inorganic ingredients. The cause of this switch is due to processed foods being easier, cheaper and faster to make. Artificial nutrition and processed foods have been proven to last longer in market shelves then natural foods. Also, due to artificial additives in processed foods they help satisfy consumers taste more than natural ingredients. The method of producing processed foods is common in today's food industry and helps make money faster and efficiently for companies. Examples of this can be found in all markets that distribute food. Even though processed foods may be easier and faster to make, they are nowhere near as healthy for consumers compared to natural foods. Natural foods are healthier, wholesome, and beneficial to the human body and planet then processed foods.
The term “organic” is almost everywhere in modern society, whether it’s used to promote a product or it’s debated on whether it really benefits the human diet. Organic food is heavily debated on as it appears more and more in local grocery stores and farmers markets begin to populate, it raises questions such as “Is organic food better than food grown with pesticides and biologically engineered genes?” and “Are there benefits to eating organically over foods grown in any other way?” In terms of what data and results show in research may help lead to answers to most of the heavily debated issues throughout discussions on organic food.
Food is a major part of everyone’s everyday life. It’s hard to imagine life without the chocolate cake on your fingers or a carne asada taco in your mouth. Enjoying delicious desserts and fast food seem extremely magnificent to eat and spend money buying them. Although, there have been many controversies in the United States on how it’s the largest country with the most obesity regarding children, which affects their health, many people are still going throughout their day snacking. Many people in America are having full course meals with thousands of calories in one sitting not knowing the short term or long term side effects that are going to take a huge toll on their lives. Food is delicious, but it comes with a secret behind the savoriness/sweetness.
“Healthy eating” means eating a variety of foods that gives you the nutrients you need to maintain your health, feeling good with your health conditions, and having enough energy throughout the day (Nordqvist). A poor diet can cause harm a person’s daily life activities. Research from Eating Healthy Might Prove Too Expensive for Poor ABC News shows, that the price of eating healthy foods may be expensive to a family who earns a low-income. So, eating fast foods may be more convenient for them knowing that the prices are way less. However, everyone should make the effort to stop eating foods that will later on harm your health. As mentioned in the article “Healthy Eating”, “Healthy eating is not about strict dietary limitations, staying unrealistically
conventional food, they take in a great deal of harmful chemicals. In organic farming, “... there is
Junk food has been proven to be unhealthy long time ago. Junk food started to grow more and more recently and spread fast all over the world. Junk food reveals any food with high calories and low nutritional value. A big problem with junk foods is that satiation value of them is low, that means people need to eat a large amount of that unhealthy foods to feel full. So it is like eating a lot of poisons for a long time, what do you think the result will be on the health condition of the humans? Another problem of junk foods tend to replace other healthy foods; people who drink a lot of soda there is no room for healthy natural fruit juice in their stomach, people who are snacking on cookies, they’re not eating fruits and healthy vegetables (WebMD
