Does playing sports benefit any of the eight million high school students in the US? Sports give children the opportunity to improve many aspects of their lives. Research states that children who participate in sports develop advanced physical, personal, and social skills.
Children should play sports because of the physical benefits like learning skills, becoming fit, and relieving stress. A quote by Metzl and Jordan from Child Athletes exclaims that “Sports give kids a satisfying, enjoyable way to develop their own talents” (5-6). The skills that children learn stick with them for the rest of their lives. These skills will also help with the many jobs children will go up to have. When kids play sports it helps them establish lifelong habits for physical fitness. This is a very important now that obesity is on the rise (Metzl and Shookoff). Technological advancements over the years have made children less active which has led to unhealthy habits, so children sports give them ways to stay fit. One of the many benefits of playing sports is the children will build character. Building character is important because with character they will obtain new friends and develop different skills. This is a benefit because they will build character from learning how to deal with wins and losses from playing sports. Also, they will develop different skills. What could you do to prepare your kids for success in the future? Sports are one of the best ways to prepare kids for success in the future for many reasons. According to University of Missouri Health Care, “Sports require memorization, repetition, and learning - skill sets that are directly relevant to class work.”(muhealth). Not only do sports help them become better students, but they also prepare them both mentally and physically and teach them multiple life lessons that will better them in the long run. In some cases, playing a sport can benefit you in an enhanced form. Scholarships can be a broad opportunity for valuable players with a good education on their shoulders. So every answer you get will be bias. To stay on topic tho I say that kids should play football and hockey. I wanted to play hockey as a kid but my didn't like the physicality and thought i would get hurt just like the article says. Guess what my mom hates hockey, that proves the bias point i made earlier. Are high school sports beneficial or not for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.

I have chosen to focus this essay on the level of sport that schools provide. Not every school offers enough, and I will demonstrate why some need to do more to offer greater opportunities. I will also compare levels offered by both the state and private systems and make recommendations as to where more could be done.
