Argument Prompt Technology is something people in the world think we need and some people think that technology is not needed at all. Some people around the world don’t even get the privilege to use technology. I think that people can go without technology for a week for many reasons. If we don’t use technology in school for a week, then maybe more students will get done with their work more quickly. Some students listen to music almost every time they work, and that can be very distracting. For example, when I’m doing work and a song on Pandora comes on that I like, I tend to dance in my seat and get distracted from what I am doing. For some people, it’s easier to listen to music while they work, but I think for the most part that is taking …show more content…
they can lose track of what they are saying and turn it in, and probably not get a good grade on it. If we went a week without technology, I think that people will get work done faster and get better grades on their work. Usually, what I see people doing after they finish an assignment in that class, they get on their chromebooks and play an online game or look something up on the internet. In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”, it states “What really makes us intelligent isn’t our ability to find lots of information quickly. It’s our ability to think deeply about that information. And deep thinking, brain scientists have discovered, happens only when our minds are calm and attentive.” Then, they quote, “ The greater our concentration, the richer our thoughts.” When some people get home, like me, we tend to not start our homework when we get home and watch Netflix, or go on YouTube, or go on social media. I get home around 4 o’clock and I usually start my homework around 5 o’clock or 5:30. That was about an hour or an hour and a half of time I wasted that I could have been doing homework. If we don’t have the technology for a week, people can get done with their homework and have plenty of free time to then watch Netflix or go on YouTube and social
First of all, using electronics causes people to get distracted. According to Nicholas Carr, in the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” from The New York Times Upfront, “When we use our computers and our cell phones all the time, we’re always distracted.”This sentence stated by Nicholas Carr contributes to my claim of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week.” For instance, when students are at home using their electronics they get distracted from doing their homework. This is a way technology is affecting many students. This article by Nicholas Carr supports my argument of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because many students do get distracted while using electronics causing them not to do their work.
Though being exposed to technologies like computers from an early age may have given us the ability to do things more efficiently, technology has also made us less dependent on ourselves. Claudia Wallis, editor for Time, in her article makes known in The Multitasking Generation, “That level of multiprocessing and interpersonal connectivity is now so commonplace that it’s easy to forget how quickly it came about. Fifteen years ago, most home computers weren’t even linked to the Internet” (63). There are many things that students are able to do on their computer that their parents aren't even aware of or that the parents couldn’t do themselves. My parents always tell of how looking through the library’s card catalog and searching for the books they needed only to find out that they have been taken out. Computers have allowed us to do many things faster for example, write much faster than a typewriter or pen and paper and correct typing errors without starting over. The computers and technology we now have makes it easier to almost anything and with technology so easily at your fingertips it o...
Online users will be able to have “more creative and informed solutions,” said researcher Peter Norvig. By using the Internet, these users are also more likely to come across pictures, ideas, and writing pieces from all around the world. Instead of having to stay in a library for many hours, one can search a specific topic, and many links will appear. Research has also shown that using the computer has increased the advantages for neurology. Gary Small, a psychiatrist at the University of California, Los Angeles, stated that having these distractions will increase the stress hormones in a person’s body. These hormones are known to reduce short-term memory. Internet users have also displayed higher brain activity than non Internet users. This means that the neural circuitry in these users’ brains are increasing. Their brains were shown to be better at finding
The epic poem, Beowulf, a work of fiction, offers more insight into Ancient Anglo-Saxon English culture than the work of Bede, who wrote, A History of the English Church and People. The epic poem Beowulf gives an enhanced illustration and clearer understanding of the culture of the Ancient Anglo-Saxon’s. The epic poem gives the audience a picture of what the Ancient Anglo-Saxon English valued; seafaring, warriors, heroes, and paganism.
“Man masters nature not by force but by understanding. This is why science has succeeded where magic failed: because it has looked for no spell to cast over nature”. From the beginning of time man and nature has been in conflict with one another because, as a whole, there is no cooperating. Each one tirelessly wants its way. The Man is fighting for dominance and nature w never yielding its authority. In American Literature, many authors illustrate this theme in their writing. Specifically the writers Jack London in The Law Of Life, Stephen Crane The Open Boat and Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Fin. Each explores the relationship between humans and nature but with slightly different methods. Mark Twain uses nature in a realistic way, Jack London in a naturalistic way and Stephen Crane constitutes a combination of both.
Every day, more and more attempts of banning books and taking away the rights of our First Amendment get violated. The challenging of a book is the attempt to remove or restrict materials, and the banning is the removal of these materials. I believe that books should not be banned for these reasons.
There comes a time in someone’s life when they must get a job to support themselves or their family. For those who don’t have a college degree, a minimum wage job is the way to go. A federal minimum wage is the lowest hourly, daily or monthly compensation that employers may legally pay to workers. However if minimum wage is so low that someone can barely make an income, to support themselves or a family. Minimum wage is based on federal decisions. Some states minimum wage is more than the next. For example Florida’s is $7. 79 while Connecticut’s is $8.25 per hour. Georgia has the lowest minimum wage which is $5.15. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. Minimum wage should be increased because poverty will be reduced, it will be good for economic recovery, and provide more for families. However minimum wage raises are opposed by those who believe it will create more unemployment.
Imagine an entire week of class without any cell phones, computers, or any other devices that can cause as a distraction to students, or cause you to lose their attention. Wouldn’t that week just be great? Well this is now a realistic thought, now that “Shut Down Your Screen Week” has been proposed. After reading Social Media as Community, Is Google Making Us Stupid, and Attached to Technology and Paying a Price the decision is clear; we should participate in “Shut Down Your Screen Week”. Although devices, such cellular phones and computers, are time savers and make us more efficient at finding relevant information, a week without them is well in need. This is mainly because the internet and electronic devices can be addictive, cause attention problems, and stop students from learning. We need to come to a halt with our consistent use of digital technology in order to help our students.
Every person has wondered about something - whether it be a person, place, thing, law, or anything that someone can think about. They ask questions both rhetorical and actual to themselves, and usually make it a mission to answer these questions. Some of the biggest questions have something to do with culture and religion. One of the most major questions of all time - to what extent does an individual have control over the outcome of his or her life? There are many different opinions on this topic.
““Well, they had a point. You are fat and disgusting!” The therapist announced. Patricia was sobbing, eyes red and nose runny...“Come on… Let’s go. We aren’t putting up with that!” her father...opened the door and ushered the family through. The therapist just observed and no more was heard from him…[Her nervous breakdown] was a result of long term bullying leading to an episode of being run out of school by a gang of boys. They threatened to kill her with a crowbar, sticks and wooden planks. She felt like a hunted fox” (shazwellyn.hubpages.com). No matter how hard a parent might try to help their child, whether they’re being bullied or are the bully, the consequences should not fall on the people who raise them because the victims have to do what they can to make up for what they’ve done or what they’ve suffered. The city of Monona, Wisconsin has proposed a new law that tickets and fines the parents for failing to respond properly to their child’s poor behavior. A behavioral and personal change consulting specialist, Mr. Michael Harmann, hypothesized that bullying behavior is typically an effort to cover up the bully's own vulnerability. It's a primitive mindset that wants to make you pay when you show vulnerability and since bullying mostly occurs under the legal age, that’s enough to say that higher levels of authority don’t have control over the thoughts and actions that bullies use as an outlet for their own pain because it goes against the Constitution. The key to helping the children we feel so sorry for is to heal the bully before he turns into a monster and the only way to help the perpetrator is to make him face his motivation to bully. “If you think about it, a great strategy to avoid being rejected is to reject everyon...
What makes a good person good? According to WikiHow, "We should learn to define our own morals ourselves. One of the simplest ways to do so is to love others, and treat them as you would like to be treated. Try to think of others before yourself. Even doing small things daily will greatly enrich and improve your life, and the lives of others around you." This quote shows us what we need to do in order to be what society thinks as, “good". In order to be a good person, you have to do good and moral things in your society consistently. However people might think that by doing one good thing once in a while will automatically make you a “good person”, but in reality it doesn’t.
The book Making Learning Whole by David Perkins is developed teaching examples centered on a metaphor of playing a baseball game. Perkins feels that education is damaged when teachers break down knowledge into individual facts. When teachers teach only bits and pieces of knowledge at a time, students only get bits and pieces and not the overall picture. This hampers the students overall learning potential. I feel that his analysis about learning about realistic activities and getting students to engage in each aspect of learning will allow the student to acquire more meaningful connections in learning. I do feel that when a student sees the relevance in what is being taught, they will be able to make meaningful connections and also progress both critical knowledge and also have more success at attacking the challenging parts. Perkins Theory of learning by playing the whole game is a fun way to conceptualize teaching while shaping the minds of our students. While using baseline experiences, teachers can challenge current thinking to entice their students. Giving students the end concept as a main focus, while putting all the pieces together, helps students engage in critical thinking aspects of learning. Showing how this impact their life, or how they can apply the information to their life will give the students a more accurate understanding of content.
Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life, whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low Use of Technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful.

...ass. School administrators should remember not to force technology into their curriculum unless they are confident in the student 's ability to learn and correctly recall information presented. When students have no desire to learn and are given tools to distract themselves technology hurts them, or rather their test scores, more than students who learn with book or oral based teaching because the absence of distraction. Computers and iPads are very difficult to repair or replace compared to books, and because most people are not yet “technologically literate” enough to perform basic tasks for the maintenance of their computer, then it would just be easier to use books. These issues create question as to if students are ready for classes to require computer knowledge when some have difficulty learning the material as it has always been learned for thousands of years.
