Don’t you hate when people try to pay you in pennies. In America there is a small controversy if the pennie should still continue to be part of American currency. Pennies in America provide zero use because they cost more to make than what they are worth and they are worth so little no one sees the in using them.
In America pennies cost more than double to make than what they are actually worth. The United States mint says that every zinc and copper coin costs 2.41 cents to produce and distribute. The United States mint verifies the fact that it costs 2.41 cents to make a coin that is only worth 1 American cent, so this completely useless coin only has the mint losing money not gaining. Tax payers in America have lost a total 60.2 million dollars and production and distribution of the pennie in the 2011 fiscal year. This statement is true the pennie is part of American history, although no one sees the point in using pennies anymore. Most people refuse to take pennies as change, others just store them in jars, but what really takes the cake is that some people just throw pennies away into water fountains. No one wants to hang on to a pennie, people just want to get rid of them. Sure you can save up pennies until you have enough to buy something, but that will take way too long. You are better off saving quarters or dollar bills. You might think “well what if some people want to collect pennies”. That is completely fine although, people pay for these pennies to be made. So when people lose pennies on drawers or in the back of dressers it’s only causing people to lose money. The United States mint should stop making these pennies for the fact that no one ever uses them they just collect them or lose
them. In conclusion, America should get rid of the pennie because it cost too much to make for what it’s worth and no one even decides to use a pennie to make a payment. There is one solution to this problem and it is to stop making pennies. Think about when they stop making pennies you don’t have to worry about people trying to give you pennies.

In America’s modern day economy, the penny is very useless and irrelevant in our society today. As source C states, “The time has come to abolish the outdated, almost worthless, bothersome, and wasteful penny.” There is not one item that can be purchased with a penny anymore (Source C). As source C states, “it takes nearly a dime to buy what a penny bought back in 1950.” Stores such as the Dollar Store prove how the cheapest items you can purchase are with only a dollar, not a cent. Pennies are shoved out of the economic picture by credit cards and because of the modern-day technology, there are even self-service machines that help convert coins into paper money (Source B).
