What really happens to the animals after lights turn out, and the visitors leave? Maybe zoos are not that horrible, and it is in only some cases. The controversy surrounding the lives of zoo animals, is that not many care to learn about the reality these animals face after they leave the zoo and go home. Some say that they are just animals and do not need to be accommodated for their basic needs. According to National Geographic an elephant born in captivity has its lifespan cut down by 39 years compared to those living in their native habitat. Also according to the green planet organization only 10% of zoos are actually accredited by the AZA, that is only 200 zoos out of 2,000. The reason that I chose this topic is because I have been interested
As a kid, I had always looked forward to days at the zoo. I was, however, far more interested in the jungle-themed surroundings than the educational parts. I was told that zoos protected animals and took good care of them. Now I'm not too sure that's the truth. Animals like tigers, lions, and elephants are born to live and grow up in the wild. They aren't meant to live inside of a cage in a zoo. Not only that, but the animals' health isn't as good as you'd expect. Although lots time and money has been spent on zoos, animals are still suffering. Zoos are fun and exciting for kids and tourists, however, the animals aren't enjoying it as much as us.
Quarter 2 argumentative essay How would you feel if you were taken away from your family? Tilikum an orca whale was taken away from his family when he was captured. Tilikum could only swim in small circles for a year before being transferred to Seaworld. In 1991 a trainer named Keltie Byrne fell into the pool with three orcas.
Even though some zoos have an endangered species exhibit with the intention of protecting and rehabilitating animals, many do not do an adequate job of protecting the animals. Zoos have been harmful to the very animals they have sworn to protect. Animals in captivity often suffer from anxiety, boredom and other severe issue related to prolonged confinement. Most animals are unable to thrive in small enclosure with unnatural weather and climates. For example elephants are known to walk as far as 30 miles per day, but the association of Zoos and aquariums only require a space the measures $0 feet by 45 feet, which is about the size of a three car garage, to house these large animals. (peta.org) the drastic difference in the amount of space their allowed ...
Zoos display fascinating animals from all over the world for human entertainment, research, conservation, and education. Many scientists conduct studies on animals in captivity that they may not have been able to in the wild. Zoos educate all the visitors that come; they let people know everything that they know about the animals on display. We do learn a lot from these animals, but not all of the animals in the zoo are behaving like they normally would in the wild. Larger animals, such as elephants and orcas (commonly known as killer whales), have trouble with being confined in such a small area. However, many smaller animals benefit from zoos because they provide protection from predators, natural disasters, and poachers. They also benefit from conservation efforts; the babies being born get all the care they could ever need. Some animal rights activists are concerned that the conservation efforts are limiting the gene pool of the species. They argue that the small number of animals able to breed in captivity limits biodiversity and leads to weaknesses in the species overall. Zoos are wonderful places to study and learn about animals, but we need to improve the living standards for animals that struggle with captivity.
Sir Walter Scott's Characterization of Two Drovers Much of Sir Walter Scott's popularity during the early eighteen hundreds came from his ability to draw forth the national pride of his readers, be they Scottish or English. " The Two Drovers" takes this element and pushes it immediately to the forefront by focusing on both an Englishman and a Scotsman in a tale revolving around nationality; however, Scott is not merely satisfied with establishing his protagonists as simply the model Highlander and model Englishman. Throughout the story, the author puts a strong emphasis on the personal qualities of the main characters, characterizing them both as proud individuals, while also noting their individual talents and temperaments. Certainly the most prominent trait in both main characters is pride for their homelands, but Scott uses very different methods of presenting this pride in his two protagonists. In the case of the Highland Scott, Robin Oig, the author chiefly uses imagery to characterize Robin's deep roots in the Scottish highlands.
A zoo is an environmental area for animals, it is also an exhibit for humans to see and learn about the animals. It’s a place where friends and family come together and see the animals of nature. There are many zoos all over the world. There are three very important reasons why animals should be kept in a zoo.
Zoos, aquariums, and circuses, they are very popular with many groups of people, and enjoyed by many different groups of people. In the last few years, zoos, aquariums, and circuses have been under controversy, they should still house animals. These places should be allowed to house these animals as long as regulations are followed, the animals are in good health, and the people learn/ enjoy their time at the zoo or the aquarium or the circus. Zoos, aquariums, and circuses should be allowed to have animals because it gives young and old people a learning experience, it allows animals to not go extinct, and it provides a conservational outlook on animals that need help.
Of the 2,323 zoos in the U.S, only 135 are accredited, a non-required status given to zoos by the AZA, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The accreditation states the zoo in question professionally cares for wildlife and is primarily focused on preserving the wildlife in an educational and scientific way(AZA). Moveover, the rest of the 2,188 U.S. zoos have to meet the Animal Welfare Act, an act from 1966 that requires only the minimal care and treatment for specific animals, to be in operation. These specific animals mentioned under the Animals Welfare Act are dogs, cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, nonhuman primates, and marine mammals-including polar bears. This leaves no less than 5,000 mammal species unprotected(AZA).
Many people go to their local zoo to get up close and interact with animals that can only be seen on television or in the wild. Zoos can provide a fun and educating environment to the public. However, animals in zoos are living in confined areas behind fences and glass enclosures. These animals are forced to entertain us whilst we flash our cameras in front of their faces, and let our children bang and knock on their glass enclosures. The majority of us are oblivious that we have been laughing at zoo animals (this whole time).
150 million people visit 500 zoos every year and I am one of them. It’s awesome to we have zoos are else we couldn’t see some rare and endangered animals like when I saw a panda or a Siberian white tiger. Some people think that zoo are safe for animals others think that zoos aren’t safe for animals I think that zoos are one of the safest places for animals because zoos are educational because of all of the animals, also because zoos have breeding and research centers which zoo keeper can breed endangered and rare animals. In my opinion animals are losing their habitats so that makes zoo are better for all these animals better and they can call their new habitat a home. Also the first known zoo Menagerie- Hierakonpolis 3500 BCE and the first modern zoo-
In addition, the animals that are endangered can be bred in captivity so there species doesn’t become extinct. A organization called the AZA carefully makes sure the animals have a suitable living space. Lastly, zoos provide education to about 12 million student learners a year. We need zoos to protect and conserve the animals, and to educate us. Zoos are a great
In most cases, zoos can be more dangerous for the animal than in the wild. Many animals from different parts of the world are being put into one facility. The animals are then being introduced to diseases that
Zoos have been around for quite some time; however not all the animals are being treated with the care they deserve. They should not be taken from their friends and family in the wild and be forced to live in cement cages for the rest of their lives. Some zoos in the world do go above and beyond to make sure their animals are satisfied, but something needs to change with those zoos who are only meeting the governmental requirements. There are animals around the world living in captivity that are starving, suffering, spending their days pacing, and all alone. Zoos that do not reach the space, care and social requirements for animals are not ethical and should not be allowed to continue forcing these animals to suffer.
However, I wonder how it is different for an animal to be sedated and locked in a cage for its entire life. Not only are the cages small, but they are also unnatural. Flamingos develop problems with their feet when they are in captivity, polar bears suffer in hot weather, and orcas become distressed in cramped pools (Estrada). However, when the wild animals act wild, such as recently when the gorilla attacked the child or when the orca killed the trainer, people become upset. Zoo animals are robbed of their life to coexist naturally.
The World Wildlife Fund states that there is no way of knowing the exact number of existing species of animals. For illustration purposes, if there were one hundred billion different species and the rate of extinction is one hundredth of a percent per year, then that means at least ten thousand species of animals go extinct every year. Zoos play an important role in the animal conservation programs. If it were not for zoos, many animals would no longer exist today.
