Nearly 50 percent of American adults aged 18 and older who responded to the 2013 Gallup survey, took vitamin supplements regularly to maintain good health (Swift). Although there are many different areas to be considered when discussing "good health," a key component is getting the proper nutrients. The main purpose of taking vitamin supplements is to receive the nutrients that are not received through everyday food intake. There are many questions and concerns that surround the idea of vitamins and supplements. With more and more Americans are becoming uneasy with the hype surrounding this topic, increased amounts of information about overall health is being discharged. There have been a great deal of studies coming out to demonstrate both sides of the argument. One side being that vitamins are completely useless, are all talk, and have little, if any, benefits. The other side, which I am an advocate for, is that vitamins do have a purpose and that they provide the nutrients that aren 't being received in our diet. Taking vitamins have great benefits in helping live and maintain a healthy life. To …show more content…
According the Ryan N. Harrison, in Vitamins: what are they, how they work, why you need them, what we may not be aware of is that without a good multivitamin supplement, you probably aren 't getting the amounts of vitamins that your body needs to run optimally. Although many people consider their diet to be "up to standards", the truth about it is it is insanely hard to eat a diet that meets the FDA level for vitamins. (Harrison). According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, on the FDA 's website, they state that: "many people consume more calories than they need without taking in recommended amounts of a number of nutrients. The Guidelines warn that there are numerous nutrients—including vitamins—for which low dietary intake may be a cause of concern."

According to the 2002 Harris poll, seven out of ten adults in the United States take vitamins, minerals, herbs, or other supplements (Schardt 2). Due to media advertising, dietary supplements are becoming more popular. Companies compete to have the best supplements. It is said that forty percent of American adults take vitamin supplements and over the counter products, which total in several billion dollars (Farley 2). Although many of the supplements claim to be healthy and help lose weight, the dangers are endless. Dietary supplements can be illegally spiked and are not safe. When a patient finds out they are pregnant, prenatal vitamins are one of the first recommendations given by the doctor. Multivitamins are recommended to take daily before pregnancy to get the proper nutrients for you. So what is the big difference between prenatal vitamins and multi – vitamins? The main difference is the intake of folic acid that is provided in the two. Folic acid is a form of vitamin B9 and is required for DNA replication, which carries genetic information. It also helps prevent changes to DNA that leads to cancer. Folic acid is a water- soluble vitamin, which means it cannot be stored and is the synthetic form of folate (Greenburg, Bell, Guan, & Yan-hong Yu, 2011). Folic acid works with vitamin B12 and vitamin C to aid the body in the break down, use, and makings of new proteins (Gersten, 2013).
A well-balanced diet contains all the necessary vitamins, and most individuals who follow such a diet can correct any previous vitamin deficiencies. However, persons who are on special diets, who are suffering from intestinal disorders that prevent normal absorption of nutrients, or who are pregnant or lactating may need particular vitamin supplements to bolster their metabolism. Beyond such real needs, vitamin supplements are also often popularly believed to offer "cures" for many diseases, from colds to cancer; but in fact the body quickly eliminates most of these preparations without absorbing them. In addition, the fat-soluble vitamins can block the effect of other vitamins and even cause severe poisoning when taken in excess.

What makes a good person good? According to WikiHow, "We should learn to define our own morals ourselves. One of the simplest ways to do so is to love others, and treat them as you would like to be treated. Try to think of others before yourself. Even doing small things daily will greatly enrich and improve your life, and the lives of others around you." This quote shows us what we need to do in order to be what society thinks as, “good". In order to be a good person, you have to do good and moral things in your society consistently. However people might think that by doing one good thing once in a while will automatically make you a “good person”, but in reality it doesn’t.
When it comes to supplements, I feel that there is a lot of misleading health benefits from actually taking them. As I learned from monitoring my own nutrient intake, our diet sometimes is lacking of important vitamins and minerals. There are so many supplements that promise curse and longevity by taking their pill, however, their claims have not been to my standards scientifically supported. In contrast, vaccines still have a negative stigma or attitude concerning side-effects which sway parents away from having their children receive these lifesaving vaccines. There is volumes of clinical research that supports the benefits of vaccines against deadly diseases and dispels most concerns over any serious
Dietary supplements can be a good thing to use but they aren't always what they say they are. They are used by over half of all Americans and those people normally take a multivitamin or protein supplements after their workouts. In fact, whey protein is the most supplied dietary supplements among all Americans. People would also say that supplements are helpful when they become older in age, but then those people who believe supplements do not work at all. What they don't know is that if individuals take too much or too many supplements, it could hurt them and not benefit these people.

“Healthy eating” means eating a variety of foods that gives you the nutrients you need to maintain your health, feeling good with your health conditions, and having enough energy throughout the day (Nordqvist). So, eating fast foods may be more convenient for them knowing that the prices are way less. However, everyone should make the effort to stop eating foods that will later on harm your health. Humans have eluded extinction for millennia with the help of medicine. Medicine today helps us restore our health to “normal” state. Normal of today is different from normal in the past and being normal means being average. Many use medicine to get back to normal and some use it for enhancing themselves. One medicine that stands out is steroids. Steroids help your body recover faster from injuries and are supposed to be therapeutic. However, many use steroids to enhance people’s performances in sports and create new heights. Today, we are reaching a point where we are able to modify genes and protect our newborns from common illnesses such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and even cancer. This technology does not stop there and is able to change physical abilities as well as metal abilities, protect our children from depression, and even elongate lives. Whether gene modification will be used
