Americans today tend to believe that vegetarianism is America’s future,due to how it is constantly viewed in the media as glamorous and trendy. Conventional wisdom has it that one must consume meat or poultry to meet the United States Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate program nutritional standard needs in a well balanced diet. The United States most common meal is presumed to be fast food which most commonly includes a lot of meat. Some meat consumers may not consider the fact that cattle is raised solely for the purpose of it being consumed thus resulting in harm for the environment. Although meat consumers do not say so directly, they apparently assume that a vegetarian diet is not a healthy alternative compared to a diet plan that includes meat consumption. As the prominent philosophy of the Oxford University study puts it that, “37,875 healthy men and women aged 20-97, 5.4% of meat eaters were obese compared to 3% of vegetarians.” This statement comes to prove that meat consumers have a higher risk of obesity at 5.4 percent than vegetarians at only 3 percent. Although vegetarianism may seem of concern to only a small group of American citizens, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about their lifestyle choices that can improve their overall health. Vegetarianism is the future of humanity, humans have evolved and can now be able to survive on a vegetarian diet. Not to long ago a landlord in Washington found this out, he told his current and prospective tenants that they could have a 200 dollar discount in rent if they vowed to go vegan or vegetarian. I will first show the lack of validity and soundness to Howard’s claim that A) a vegan lifestyle is a healthier choice and B) his claim that one must switch to that lifestyle to enjoy these said benefits. To the claim made in A, Howard uses his own health problems he endured on his meat diet, and uses it as a constant variable comparing it to his now relative healthy lifestyle as a vegan. On first glance anyone who eats a calorie-laden, unbalanced diet and ends up weighing 300 pounds, as Lyman himself admitted, will have health problems regardless of his orientation to meat or vegetables. The food industry is in a state of necessary revolution, for obesity rates seem to be rising exponentially, counties striving to develop have hit lack-of-food road blocks, and massive animal farms produce threats such as unethical treatment of animals and food-borne pathogen spikes. Most of us do not think twice about the foods we pick up from the supermarket. Many Americans have a preconceived belief that the food being sold to us is safe, and withholds the highest standard of quality. Certainly, compared to many places in the world, this is true. But is the United States sincerely trying to carry out these standards, or have we begun to see a reverse in the health and safety of our food- and more explicitly in our meat? Jonathan Foer, author of “Eating Animals” argues for reform within the food industry- not only for the humane treatment of animals but moreover for our own health. Although Foer exposes the ills within the food industries in order to persuade readers to change their diets for the better, his “vegetarianism or die” assessment may be too extreme for most Americans. The true ills do not start with the meat, but with industrialized production of it through methods practiced by factory farming.
Vanessa Ha and Russell de Souza published a study they did over the health benefits of vegetarianism in the Journal of the American Heart Association. They found that switching to a vegetarian diet can cause healthy weight loss, lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, lower blood pressure. They also found that vegetarians eat lower amounts of total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol. If the United States’ population could start to lose weight, there would be a multitude of benefits. People would have more energy, they would sleep better, and the nation would get back on track. Weight loss can also help to reverse Type 2 Diabetes. Many people would be able to get off their medication and be able to function without being dependent on their medicine. They would also save time because they would not have to go to doctor’s appointments so often. They have found out from studies that women who eat meat daily have a fifty percent greater risk of developing heart disease than vegetarian women and a sixty-eight percent greater risk in men (staff writer). People may not know about serious diseases meat can cause such as, mad cow disease and foot-and-mouth disease.
