The formation and birth of two babies do not seem to be a rare occasion these days. Throughout the years, the number of twin births, both fraternal and identical, has grown by about seventy-nine percent; IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) has also been one of the causes. Twins are two offspring which are created by the same pregnancy and birth; there can be two types of twins, either fraternal or identical. To briefly summarize, fraternal twins are the formation of two different eggs, which were fertilized by more than one sperm cells, whereas identical twins are a result of a single fertilized egg which divides into two identical eggs. There are many interesting facts about twins such as fraternal twin girl has two times the chance of conceiving twins. Identical twins share the same placenta and amniotic sac, but each has their own umbilical cord. There is such a condition called, “Vanishing twin syndrome,” where one of the two twins disappears during the pregnancy, this can occur if the mother experiences a miscarriage of one of the twins, or if the twin is reabsorbed into the placenta, the other twin, or the mother. The connection that twins have is like no other, from the womb throughout their whole lives. Although we are starting to see more twin pregnancies now, than in past years, the formation of both identical and fraternal twins is a wonderful process from the very beginning of the pregnancy, whether it started off with one or two eggs. Women can have many factors and predispositions that can lead them to the conception of multiple babies. Science and technology have helped us learn much more about twins, for instance, how they are formed, what takes place once inside the womb, and many conditions that can occur throughout the development of the twins. Today, we know so much about twins and still consider their creation, and birth to be what we know as the fascinating miracle that is

On October 9, 1968, a set of twins were born, but separated at birth and ultimately, put up for adoption. However, for unknown reasons, the experiment never developed to fruition. Unaware the child they adopted was a twin; both sets of parents raised a singular child. Thirty-five years later, one twin began a search for her biological mother through the adoption agency, only to find out that she was born a twin. Upon learning her identity, she reached out to her twin and they began the journey of getting to know one another by comparing characteristics that appeared similar such as temperament and mannerism. They even discovered that they both held positions as a film critic and enjoyed almost identical movies.

With technology becoming more advanced and people who normally have problems becoming pregnant can use in vitro fertilization, people delaying motherhood, and survival rate increasing; having twin children is not as rare as it was thought to be in the past. The characters in the novel are all twice-born because they wanted who they were in Deptford to disappear. Only of the characters were able to change who they were completely while the others just developed more into themselves as they grew. The idea of the twice-born is the idea of being able to change who you are and to completely move on from everything that has been holding you back.

Fraternal twins are the most common type of twins. They are the result of the union of two eggs and two sperm. Fraternal twins can be the same or different sexes (Wade 53). Segal says that, “They are two individuals, no more genetically alike than brothers and sisters that develop from separate fertilizations” (Segal 1). Amazingly, fraternal twins can be conceived at separate times and have different fathers. It seems to be a hereditable trait to conceive fraternal twins. With this in mind, having single births is very safe and those babies are still healthy today, just like Sarah and Maggie Marshall’s baby.
