If you walk into a classroom full of teenagers and ask how many of them have a type of social media, and a majority of the students will raise their hand. Social media has become a lifeline in countless people’s lives in today’s society. One of the most popular social networking sites is Facebook. With millions of account holders, it is hard to find an individual who does not associate with Facebook. This shows that Facebook impacts a vast number of people throughout the world. For many, Facebook has become their way of socializing, causing people’s social skills to plummet. Mediation is a form of way people receive and connect to certain information acquired from a certain type of media. Facebook happens to be an example of mediation, because …show more content…
For many, social media has become their source of an outlet, allowing them to forget the stress in their daily lives. This allows them to develop a strong need to keep the source of their stress reliever close by, and Facebook is a major example of these sources. With so many people relying on Facebook to alleviate them of their stress, it’s not hard to realize that addiction to Facebook is on the rise. Most of these Facebook addicts exist in our generation, mainly the high school and college age groups. There are many different factors to why Facebook is extremely popular among this age group. For example, Facebook allows its users to meet new acquaintances while staying connected with older acquaintances. It is also a convenient way of sharing experiences with others, while at the same time being able to see what journeys their friends and family have experienced. Each one of these plays a major role on why Facebook has become an addiction to many not only in our generation, but to older generations as well. Zarremohzzabie et al. informs us that “ sometimes users cannot stop themselves from using Facebook to excess, allowing it to take up more and more of their time and thoughts, without any concrete outcome-like an outcome-like many addictions.” Although Facebook addiction may not seem like a massive problem, within the journal, information from an American …show more content…
Facebook is a free type of social media for its users. It includes many beneficial features; Facebook messenger, video chat, and also the opportunity to upload photographs, without the hassle of a usage fee. Lorna H. Findlay contributes a list of advantages to using Facebook, including “allowing users to search for new and old friends, accessible to chosen universities having a high level of security, makes it less awkward for strangers to communicate if they don’t know each other well, makes it easy to join groups and pages with common likes and dislikes, and allows users to see students who are taking similar classes as them and living in the same area” (Facebook Advantages and Disadvantages). Each of these advantages play an important role in explaining why Facebook has become such a popular type of social media.
In conclusion, Facebook has become a major issue in today’s society. Not only does it have an effect on the way people use their social skills, but also has become an addictive behavior for many. It also has the potential of being dangerous for the account holder. Of course, some will argue that Facebook has some extremely beneficial factors, but the negatives tend to outweigh the positive factors. Learning how to use Facebook positively can eventually lead to a healthier life
One’s amount of Facebook reflects how popular one wish to appear online more than how healthy one’s friendship truly is. Constant usage of Facebook allows user to potentially feel like they have a meaningful social life, when in reality, they are missing something. In Stephen Marche’s 2102 article, “Is Facebook making Us Lonely?” he notes that Facebook was introduced to the world in the midst of spreading and intensifying loneliness, an idea to which he greatly attributes Facebook’s appeal and success (Marche 26). Initially, social networking sites seem to be evidence of modern-day social interaction being easier and more convenient than ever.
Social media is a revolutionary way to connect to friends and family through a single app much like Facebook. Also allowing the public to be more informed on current events whether that would be an issue in today 's society all the way to a heartwarming story or a funny video. Although this sounds amazing and the fact that this type of news outlet is practically new. An issue arises that involves “fake news” and with that comes many opinions on what to do about it. I believe that people browsing these platforms should have a little bit of skepticism behind each story and if it the topic truly intrigues someone then they should look into the topic on a reliable resource before passing on the authors misinformation.
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
“I didn't know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time –Betty White (“Betty White Quotes,” 2014, para. 1).” This quote can be interpreted to fit with several of the social media avenues that many people spend their time on. Day in and day out people post, tweet, share, and pin countless times throughout the world. These different forms of communication were first created for an easier way for people to connect with others. Yet now, so much time is spent on these social sites that it has warped the interactive part and is causing more damage than good. Many are growing a desire and are living for the amount of “likes” they can receive on a post or how many re-tweets they can generate. Instead of going to these outlets to participate in a partial portion of their social lives, people are filling that time with the technological aspect of communication. As White said, this can become an inordinate amount of wasted time and can ultimately grow into further damaging circumstances. These different social media channels can cause emotional harm through disparaging the relationship between friends, conjuring of a narcissistic personality, and the retrogradation of ones self-esteem.
Social networking sites like Facebook can have both negative and positive effects. Facebook can leave us feeling like we are not good enough if we don’t have enough likes on our pictures or if we do not have a certain amount of friends. While on the other hand it can make us feel empowered and worthy when we have a significant amount of likes on our picture and thousands of friends on Facebook. The following two articles argue whether or not social networking sites like Facebook, have a negative or positive effect on one’s overall well-being. As the old saying goes, there are always two sides to everything.
A person’s life is reflected on Facebook. Because so much of someone’s life is on Facebook, anyone can have a sense of what is going on in their life. This is beneficial for parents away from their children in college or just away from the nest. A visual image is more attractive than reading a lengthy blog about an individual's day. With Facebook someone can post albums at a time and can share a special event that just recently occurred. Instant messaging has improved the speed that users can communicate with each other. If they see that their friend is online all that needs to be done is a message with the word “Hey.” Facebook allows for users to connect with friends time zones away.

Today social media has become a big influence on society. There are many different social media sites that allow people to interact with others. Such social media sites are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. There are many more different sites, but these are the popular networks that are being used today. These sites allow you to connect with anybody you want to. Social media sites can make you feel connected with others and seem like the best thing, but at the same time it can be a weakness that many of us have.
In this day and age, many individuals simply cannot go without some sort of socialization. Specifically speaking, most participate in online social networking sites. The most popular and used one is commonly known as Facebook. Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. By 2007, Facebook had over 21 million users, adding up to 1.6 billion page views every single day. The typical user spends over twenty minutes per day on Facebook and two thirds of the users log in every day at least once. It is not questionable as to why many people have a Facebook account. Facebook is generally efficient, easy for socialization, and not difficult to manage. Most organizations are affiliated with Facebook, as “almost 22,000 organizations had Facebook directories,” as of November 2006. A year after that in 2007, Facebook was named the seventh most popular website (Ellison 1). However, with anything well known, many oppose to using Facebook and hold criticism against the popular network. There are many flaws in the website and the relationships it starts online. Facebook is risking dangerous activities, ignoring privacy laws, and demeaning healthy socialization.
The popular site, Facebook.com, has amassed more than one billion registrants since it started in February 2004. It is another social networking site, just like MySpace.com and Xanga.com, which is common to High School and College students. But this is no ordinary site; people’s lives literally revolve around Facebook. I have a Facebook account and log in at least once a day. I personally believe that Facebook is a fun and interactive site. However, some students may not feel that same way because they have encountered some negative aspects, aside from Facebook’s legal problems.
Social media is a phrase being thrown around a lot these days, but it can be difficult to answer the question “What really is Social media?” Social media is essentially the websites and applications we use to create and share content about our every day lives, through participation on various sites. Information technology (IT) is the category that social networking falls under, and is rapidly changing while being integrated into many areas of modern day Australian life. The reason being, children of the 21st century are considered the digital generation. It’s the latest technology that spreads information faster than any other media around the world; and this is why social media is appealing to the ‘digital generation’. Social media has a number of positive characteristics in every day life, however there are also a number of negatives that correlate. The negatives of social media have not only been proven to damage the well being of individuals, furthermore their families and communities also feel the effects.
Our society today has become dependent on social media to entertain, excite, and inform each other on the newest and latest hot topics of today’s world. Some people cannot go as long as an hour without checking their social media websites whether it is on the phone, computer, Ipad, or any other electronic devise with internet. The creators of social media have made it easier to recognize and draw the user in with notifying pop-ups every time something new happens in the cyber world. The easier it gets, the more addicting it makes it to check every second. Also, it’s not only the youth and teenagers using these social media cites; it also claims adults as well. One of the main reasons people make social media accounts is because people are nosey about other people’s lives. They get a social media page such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to monitor people and see what they are missing out of in the world. People post pictures to their “page” for everyone to see how good they look or how funny they are. Since everyone has a social media account, others feel obligated to make one, two, or even three accounts. What used to be rare is now typical for a normal person to have at l...
Most social networks make it possible for individuals to upload their entire life to a public profile. You’re not only sharing personal information with your friends but also the friends of your friends. Personal information spreads rapidly on a Social Networking Site than through a real-life network and sometimes provides more information than we would have thought. A social networking site is defined as a network of individuals related to each other based on a common interest or a real-life connection. The popularity of these sites introduces the use of a new and easy form of communication. People spend countless hours interacting with their ‘friends’ on these sites with the help of a ‘comment’ and a ‘like’ button.
Facebook is beneficial to one's social life because they can continuously stay in contact with their friends and relatives, while others say that it can cause increased antisocial tendencies because people are not directly communicating with each other. But some argue that Facebook has affected the social life and activity of people in various ways. With its availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows users to continuously stay in touch with friends, relatives and other acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as long as there is access to the Internet. Users can upload pictures, update statuses, play games, get news, add people, like and share photos, videos, memes
