“This November 10th marks 242 years of warfighting excellence … Marines have fought with an inner spirit – a spirit that bonds us, binds us together as a cohesive team.” (Neller, 2017). The Marine Corps Birthday is a celebration of Marine Corps history and traditions. Revolution. It was also used as a force in readiness, capable of forward deployment into enemy territory. The Marines’ capability extends beyond ground operations as it can also operate on air and in sea with the support of the United States Navy. The recruiting efforts were conducted at a local tavern called Tun Tavern in Philadelphia by Captain Samuel Nicholas, who would become the Marine Corps’ first Commandant. (History.com Staff, 2009). November 10th would later become the official birthday for the Marine Corps and the traditions of its birth, continues to be celebrated worldwide. The commemoration of the first Marine Corps Birthday Ball was held in 1925 in Philadelphia (Staff, 2016). This commemoration was not only used to honor the birth of the Marine Corps. But, it was also used to celebrate it. The first ball included special guests, such as the Commandant of the Marine Corps and several elected officials. Traditions Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 21, directs all commands to read Major General Lejeune’s birthday message on November 10th each subsequent year. “… it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history.” (Lejeune, 1921). This message continues to be read today and acknowledges the passing of its history, mission and tradition of the Corps. The cake cutting ceremony continues the tradition as it represents the passing of experience and knowledge. “Symbolically, the eldest Marine present passes a piece of cake to the youngest Marine present … our experienced Marines have nurtured and led young Marines that will fill our ranks and renew our Corps.” (MCO P5060.20, 2003). Senior leaders must use this example of passing experience and knowledge to their junior Marines. “When the sergeant handed me the piece of cake it felt like the old generation was passing the torch to the new generation of Marines coming in … It makes it special for me because the Marine Corps is my life now.” (Frendenburg, 2017). Indeed, the passing of the cake from the old to the young is a tradition that brings the two generations together. Knowledge and experience are the most powerful weapons that anyone can possess. During peacetime, knowledge and experience provides young members and their senior leaders with the abilities to maintain readiness. This also provides them the opportunity to be proficient in their occupations and education. During wartime, knowledge and experience will provide them with success in the battlefield and to accomplish the mission. Impact The Marine Corps Birthday is celebrated by families, friends, current and former Marines across the world. Social media has often been the most popular way for them to remind others that November 10th is the Marine Corps Birthday. It is also a day for members to pay tribute to Marines from the past and honor those that are currently deployed. For young members, it is a motivational tool, which demonstrates the passing of the torch from the old to the new. It is also a reminder of their dedication when they enlisted or received their commission. For senior leaders, it is a reminder of their achievements and the lessons learned from their careers. It is also their opportunity to remind themselves that the next generation is in front of them and to begin passing the knowledge and experience to their young members. Conclusion In summary, this paper examined the history of the Marine Corps, the importance and traditions associated with the date of its founding and the impact it has to current and former Marines.

The Marine Corps today has developed itself into an elite fighting force based on strong naval traditions. The basic Marine is amphibious, which means that the warrior is capable of fighting on land and sea. The idea of an amphibious landing was developed through the training of the Marine Raider Battalions, which was tested and perfected in combat. Although there were two Raider Commanders with very different views on how to prepare their marines, Evans Carlson and Merritt Edson were responsible for training lightly armed Marines for amphibious assaults.
As Marines, we have a well-known motto “One Team, One Fight” that creates an image of strong unity that everyone regardless of rank or size plays an important role. That threat is rooted in the attitudes or aspirations of the Army, the Navy, or various chief executives. Its nature has varied-threat to the Corps’s repute, to its right to fight, to its very survival. Secondly, the recurrent military affliction called austerity. At worst, they linger in active service and are a hazard to all around them. The third is the dead hand of bureaucracy that lies over the entire military establishment. While the larger services may be able to handle the pressures of bureaucracy, the Marine Corps has neither the instinct nor the time for it. The Marines are an assemblage of warriors, nothing more. Paper massaging and computer competitions do not kill the enemy, which is what the Marines are supposed to do.
“In 1806 Marine Corps registers showed a paid strength of only eleven officers and 307 noncommissioned officers and enlisted men. Its main duties at sea focused on guarding against mutinies on U.S. Navy ships. In combat, marines fired their muskets at enemy ships’ officers and crew during battle, formed contingents to board enemy ships or attack enemy shore installations, and repelled enemy boarders. On shore, marines guarded U.S. Navy yards in several American cities.” (With Fidelity and Effectiveness: Archibald Henderson’s Lasting Legacy to the U.S. Marine Corps, Joseph Dawson, p. 271) The early 19th century saw the United States as a small agrarian society trying to build a unified country. After the Revolution the Army, Navy and Marines were disbanded as they were believed to be not needed. No one planned to go to war with anyone and any possible land conflict could be handled by the various state militias. This changed with the influx of piracy by the French and a few North African Arab kingdoms, commonly called the Barbary pirates. The United States had a thriving mercantile marine that proudly sailed across the world to find new markets. This made them perfect targets. John Adams, the 2nd president, reconstituted the Navy and with that the Marines. New ships were built and sailors and Marines were recruited to man them. They fought against pirates in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. This had the un-intended effect of preparing them for the 2nd war with Great Britain from 1812 to 1814.
The history of Lieutenant General Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller is not well known outside of the U.S. Marine Corps, but as the most decorated marine in history his legend will live on and continue to inspire the marines of tomorrow. The enlisted corps has idolized him, frequently encouraging one another to do that last push up when motivated by fellow marines saying “Do one for Chesty!” The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate that Chesty, using current day leadership theories, was a visionary and ethical leader who exemplified the characteristics that our nation’s military needed during World War II and still needs today. I will explain how he embodied some principles of Full Range Leadership Development that are taught today. Then I will describe how he demonstrated his ethical leadership through combat actions when faced with general military ethics situations. Finally, I will examine how my own leadership abilities, though noncombat focused, compare to how Chesty led his marines. Let’s begin by exploring the visionary leadership that Lt Gen Puller exhibited.

It was near the end of a typical long day at sea onboard the USS MAHAN, which had started for me nearly twenty hours earlier. The United States Marine Corps is known as one of the worlds most elite fighting groups. Marines are looked highly upon by most people in American society. However, The Marine corps has had a rough journey since their birth date on November 10th, 1775. While the American people felt and still feel that the Marine Corps are vital in our military. Though the Marine Corps was formed originally for amphibious warfare they have proven themselves powerful “in every clime and place”. Some however feel the United States should integrate the Marine Corps into the United States Army believing that both are performing the same tasks and that having another branch is just causing the defense budget to be stretched out amongst all branches. This is one of the reasons the Marine Corps has been disbanded in the past along with peace time movements were the United States Navy was also disbanded. Even with the Marine Corps’ struggle to remain one of Americas elite fighting forces the people have always rallied behind them to keep them afloat.
The Marine Corps Values exemplify Honor, Courage, and Commitment in a service member 's character. Honor details expectations of one’s ethical and moral conduct, Courage focuses on honor in action, and Commitment deals with total dedication to the Marine Corps and the country. If one fails to maintain the Marine Corps values they face disciplinary action and the possibility of a dishonorable discharge, depending on the nature of their actions. The honor values of the Marine Corps Values place one 's personal life, as well as their action in service, under scrutiny. Lieutenant Colonel Shane Tomko was dishonorably discharged and stripped of all Service Medals and Awards on February 12th, 2015 due to actions in his personal life. Lieutenant Tomko had an affair, which breaks the Honor Code’s clause that states “A U.S. Marine must never lie, never cheat, never steal. . . Each Marine must cling to an uncompromising code of personal integrity. . . And, above all, honor mandates that a Marine never sully the reputation of his Corps.” A spokesman for the Marine Corps, Major Dolan, made a statement that the actions taken against Lieutenant Tomko were “due to a loss of confidence in his leadership” (Marine Corps Times). The affair was seen as such a dishonor on the Marine Corps as a whole and on Lieutenant Tomko’s service as an individual that he was stripped of all of the accomplishments and
