Texting and Driving: A Grave Mistake The sun begins to creep up in the sky. The birds begin their song of the day. It’s a great day for a road trip. The driver of the vehicle receives a text message. He pulls his phone out of his pocket and looks at it for five seconds. At this point he is driving 55mph and goes the length of a football field without looking at the road. He takes his hands off the wheel to reply back and simultaneously collides with the semi-truck that merged onto the road while the driver was looking at the text message. The driver of the car dies on impact. It’s not a great day. Nine drivers are killed every day in America by texting and driving (Shumacher). This action increases the risk of a crash by a multiplier of two. …show more content…
Studies also show drunk driving is actually statistically safer than texting and driving. In my observation as my family was traveling to Wisconsin, I put tallies on my notebook to record the results of passing drivers. The results were surprising in that 1 out of 8 kids and 1 out of 5 adults in passing cars were distracted while driving. These statistics are actually scary to me because I will never know which one will make a mistake when I am around them on the road. The negative effects this problem causes death and serious injury to themselves and others. It also effects the distracted drivers by placing others around them in harm. As more people text on the roads the drivers will get too familiar texting and driving. According to most statistics, that’s when most mistakes happen. Phone and car companies allow this behavior to happen simultaneously. Phone companies are making their product easier to be distracted, as the technology is addicting to use for the consumers. The notifications from the phone distract most humans from accomplishing their tasks. The phone pings or sounds and the driver looks down. Car companies are now installing Wi-Fi in the newest cars of our generation. The WI-FI is active for all passengers. The distraction element is also active for …show more content…
Insurance companies raise the prices for younger drivers. The price if a new driver on the road is texting and gets caught will double every month. If the new driver gets in a crash the companies will skyrocket the prices. My system of disabling the use of the cellphone except for emergency purposes should help these drivers and the parents with lower costs. This will eliminate the distraction of texting. Car crashes can be very costly to replace parts to make your car look new again. It only takes one little decision to make a major mistake while operating a motor vehicle. This results in high price to repair or replace the car. The cars today are all made out of cheap but high priced plastic instead of aluminum. Creating lower costs for my community will help all of them from receiving the ultimate price of death, car wrecks and higher insurance prices. My idea of this anti- distraction device will produce less problems and eliminate costs drivers won’t have to
According to Stephanie Hanes in the essay “Texting While Driving Is as Dangerous as Drunk Driving,” a driver on a phone and those talking on a phone are four times likely to crash. This statistic shows how dangerous using the phone or even texting is while driving. As technology has increased, so has the use of cellphone. Distracted driving has caused an increase in car fatalities and disasters. However, distracted driving can be prevented if drivers take precautions, but no matter what we do, trouble will always be spelling on the road.
The Harvard Center of Risk Analysis preformed a study, they studied the road and people who text while they drive. Results show that texting behind the wheel causes 330,000 injuries and 2,600 deaths a year. People who talk or text on the phone are just as impaired or even more impaired as a drunk driver. A study was performed at the University of Utah, it shows that the participants crashed when they were texting while driving but when they were intoxicated, they did not crash. This shows that texting while driving takes your focus off of the road and into the conversation you are having on the phone. Also, the University of Utah has proven that hand free devices do not make driving any safer. But, driving with passengers and talking to them makes drivers safer. Passengers help inform drivers of possible risks on the
Texting and Driving has been a huge factor in accidents. More and more cities are starting to make cell phone use illegal to prevent many life threatening accidents. A phone call and text message can wait. You never know as drivers what the people are doing around you are doing unless you are watching your surroundings. The driver might be a really good driver and might be paying some attention to the road while you are on your phone but the road needs all of the drivers attention so that prevention of accidents is at its
One day Chandler Gerber 23, of Bluffton collided with an Amish buggy back in April of 2012. A three year old boy and a five year old girl were killed. A 17 year old boy who was in critical condition died several days later. Chandler was sending a text that said “ I love you” to his wife when he caused the accident. Drivers who were texting were 23.2 times more likely to crash to those who weren’t texting (Cell Phones and Texting). The increasing amount of crashes caused from texting and driving and growing and becoming more of a problem. Distracted driving is an increasing problem in the United States resulting in many accidents, but a solution to the problem would be banning cellphones while driving.
These sort of programs have shown immense help in the number of fatalities on the road today. Along with these kinds of programs there have been several laws put in place that ban cell phone use while driving. In Syracuse, N.Y. there have been strict laws against handheld cellphone use and texting and driving, and they have been extremely effective (Copeland, 1). Law enforcement saw over 70% of texting driving put to a halt. Transportation secretary Ray LaHood said, “Over half a million people are said to be injured, and thousands more are killed in distracted driving accidents” (Copeland, 1).Another very effective campaign that will probably soon be known world-wide is “Phone in one hand, Ticket in the other”(Copeland, 1). Most people in todays world would be familiar with the “click it or ticket” phrase that has allowed people to be reminded to put on your seat belt. Just as this campaign reminds people to wear a seat belt the “Phone in one hand, Ticket in the other” is designed to remind drivers that it is far too dangerous to be interacting with your phone while driving (Copeland,
There is a current social issue that is killing many people today: texting and driving. It is very tempting to immediately check your phone when it notifies you when you receive a text message. Ignoring the sound of your phone while driving is very important for safe driving. It is not only affecting one person, it also affects the area or people around you. I believe texting and driving should be illegal because there has been many accidents due to this distraction.
Imagine yours or someone else's future when they are constantly remembering about the accident. It haunts them at night knowing they can’t wake up in the morning and get ready for work or wake up to a family of their own because of their injuries or even worse they can’t wake up period because they are dead. The best way to prevent texting and driving is by turning off your cellphone or put it on silence so you won’t get the temptation of grabbing it. Also you could put your phone out of sight or download a app that prevents you from doing anything with the phone while the car you're in is in movement. What many people think is that they can be able to multitask by texting and driving because they do it at times but nothing ever happens, then again anything could happen and just those couple of seconds they used to reach for their phone or send a text that wasn’t so important causes a big accident. Your phone isn’t worth you or someone else losing their life. Therefore, in conclusion a phone is not a main priority someone has to focus all their attention on while they are driving. Risking someone’s life your own life isn’t worth you spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair or in a hospital or even in a
Across the globe family and friends are losing their loved ones to fatal texting and driving accidents. These days, many strive to be connected with the world and their friends by using mobile devices. The problem is that numerous people tend to do so at bad times. For example, while one is driving, it is common to look down at the cell phone to send a short text message that could put their lives in harm. Across the nation, numerous advertising and support groups are spreading the word to encourage society to put phones down and focus on driving instead of texting. However, it really hasn’t stopped. There needs to be a significant change and with the way technology is advancing, there is an immediate, attainable action that can be accomplished.
One of the dangers of texting while driving at the same time is the attention it takes away from the road. A driver, who is focused on looking at their phone, is not paying enough attention to other cars or what is happening around them. Something as simple as a car stopping in front of them can cause serious damage to the driver and to the other car. “Texting” while driving is the act of composing, sending, or reading text messages, email, or making other similar use of the internet on a mobile device while operating a motor vehicle, such as an automobile, truck, or train (Reuters). Many people and authorities have viewed it as a dangerous practice. It is on occasion like this, where familiarity with the road and surrounding will not make it easier for the driver to look at their cell phone. The probabilities of drivers texting on the cell phone and getting into accidents are only getting higher. Cell phone use while driving accounts for a major cause of
We live in a technology driven time when people multitask behind the wheel. The commute to and from work is a time many like to get caught up on emails or figure out plans for the day or weekend thought texting. The truth is that multitasking behind the wheel is very dangerous and could cost you your life. Text, emails, phone calls, makeup, breakfast; it all can wait! If you don’t make it home alive your weekend plans really won’t matter much anymore.
Texting and driving is quickly becoming one of the most dangerous things that an individual can do. If texting and driving becomes illegal people are more likely to get into an accident. “In fact, research conducted by the Highway Loss Data Institute (2010) suggest that enacting texting free bans may actually increase the likelihood of an accident occurring.” (Kareklas & Muehling 224) The people would try to hide their phone, which would take their eyes off of the road even more. If we can get people to stop texting while driving there will be fewer accidents, since people will have to pay more attention to the road. Getting people to stop is important, but there are a couple of ways to approach the situation you could try to have the people
Texting while driving should be illegal in every state due to many reasons of safety. A person 's life is far more valuable than any text message ever will be, no text message is worth the cost of risking the life of yourself and the life of others while behind a motorized vehicle. Being on the phone and texting while driving becomes more and more common on a day to day basis. Safety, well-being, and protection are all ways you can simply take care of yourself, but if you won’t take the time to do it no one will. Only you can help yourself when it comes to your safety and well-being, taking your eyes off of the road to look down, around or anywhere other than watching the road is putting not only yourself but others well at risk of an accident. Texting while driving can border your senses as a driver to not be able to respond when a car comes out of no where, or is even near you.
Texting while driving is a widespread epidemic in the United States that has unfavorable effects on our society.“Driving while texting is the standard wording used for traffic violations” (Bernstein). It causes many people to be distracted which can lead to accidents. “Eighty-nine percent of people own a cell phone” (Gardner). That is a plethora of people that are at risk of texting while driving. Also, texting has increased by ten times in three years(Bernstein). “The risk of a crash for those who are texting is twenty-three point two times greater than those who are not” (Gardner).Driving drunk only makes a person seven times more likely to be in a crash (Bernstein). This means texting while driving is three times more dangerous than driving intoxicated. One in five drivers admits to texting while driving(Gardner). This shows that that texting while driving is a widespread epidemic. When a survey asked teenagers whether they text and drive,“seventy five percent of teens admitted to texting while driving” (7).Distracted driving causes seventy-eight percent of car crashes(Bernstein). “No distraction causes as high of a risk of an accident as texting while driving” (Gardner). Also with these statistics, it is not hard to understand why accidents in teenagers that are driving have risen. The Bluetooth capability in cars gives a driver a hands-free way to talk on the phone, but is still not completely safe (8). Also, only 1 out of 3 US cars sold in 2009 had this feature. New systems are being developed that will use Bluetooth as well a global positioning technology to allow parents to monitor cell phone use and texting while driving (10).
Texting while driving as a significant risk factor for highway accidents. Nowadays, more and more people are accustomed to texting while driving, however, it’s easy for them to distract themselves. Therefore, there are numerous traffic accidents in the world. There is a microblog about traffic accidents. As far as I’m concerned, there are numerous methods to stop them from texting while driving. On the one hand, someone is able to turn off his/her friend or family member’s mobile phone and keep the mobile phone until parking. Aside from turning off mobile phone, someone can also help his/her friend or family member tune the mobile phone into airplane mode and keep it until parking. On the other hand, someone is able to install sensor in the car. When the car starts, the mobile phone automatically shuts down;
“In 2011, 1.3 million automobile accidents were caused by texting and driving. “Texting and driving makes you twenty-three percent more likely to be involved in an accident.” (Zakhareuski) Not only is it dangerous it is also very expensive “The studies found that those crashes cost $277 billion in economic losses and $594 billion in societal harm, for a total of $871 billion that year.” (Distracted Driving) This shows that texting and driving is not only dangerous but can also take a toll on our wallet.
