Argumentative Essay On Steve Jobs

As kids are growing up, they hear from their parents constantly to find a good job. When parents are saying this, are they referring to the idea of finding a job that will keep their children financially stable or are they referring to them finding a job they’ll love waking up in the morning for? In Steve Jobs 2005 Commencement speech, he talks about the challenges he had to overcome to get where he is today. He believes that when you find something you’re truly passionate about then nothing will be able to stand in the way of your road to success. He stands for the idea of finding a job that you’ll love waking up in the morning for rather than just to gain money. Although Steve Jobs makes well-thought out accusations as to why everybody

shouldn’t settle for average, he leaves spots in his speech that open up to arguments that can be made against what he states. I have my agreements towards why I believe what he is saying is important, but in today’s society, we have no other choice but to settle for average and whatever will get us through our day and life struggles.

We can contain many bumps in the road from our economy that stop many people from following what it is they love to do and although there are many success stories out there of people who have made their dreams become reality, we don’t hear about the many unsuccessful stories of the people that weren’t as lucky. Everyone has a passion or a love for something that they want to do, but some people have priorities in front of their own needs. In Steve Jobs commencement speech, he states that, “The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn’t interest me, and begin dropping in the ones that looked interesting.” (Steve Jobs 2005). Steve Jobs quit from the things that got too hard for him and went from the easy things that interested him and called that ‘following his dreams’. In order to truly develop and understand what it is you have a passion for, you have to try the hard things to fully comprehend what the thing you’re passionate for is really worth running after. Everyone should follow their dreams and do the things they love just like Steve Jobs talks about, but that doesn’t mean that when things get hard and aren’t exactly what we ‘love’ that we just quit right on spot.

Steve Jobs states that going after a job that you love and acquiring a passion towards it will guarantee you to live a happier life. This option doesn’t apply to all people. Many people would definitely love to reach for their dreams and follow what it is they’re passionate for, but everybody doesn’t have that advantage to just drop what they’re doing and find their passion and pursue it. Everybody wants to live their life to the fullest, but everybody’s love and passion doesn’t guarantee them of being millionaires such as Jobs passion of building computers and technology did.
Many counter arguments can be thrown back about the arguments that I state about Steve Jobs idea of pursuing a career that you’ll love is everything life is about and should stand for.

Many Americans would probably argue, “We only have one life to live and, therefore, we should live with no regrets and go after what it is that we love.” I completely understand with the concept that he’s going with, but in today’s s economy we don’t necessarily have the time that chasing our passion takes. It’s act now and make money or become homeless. That’s practically what it's come to when trying to uphold with everything in the economy. Another counter argument that might be brought up is, “So because of the economy we live in today, we should use that as an excuse to not to pursue what our career passion is?” The economy we live in is no excuse for not going after what you love, but as Jobs mentions his whole ideals of doing what you love, he makes it seem as though that no matter your love to do is, you’ll be successful in the end as long as you stay persistent and hungry for your goal. You can be so passionate towards your goal but you always have to up for any rejection and the possibility of not pursuing what you want. Whether Jobs admits it or not, we know he enjoyed all the money he made and everyone loves money, but his passion made him successful for the purpose of his goal being something that was a major deal in the making of the economies

money.

Jobs has intentions and words that are too difficult for people to maintain and try to achieve. He loses sight of what the world is really like and the sense of reality. If the passion you want to pursue doesn’t result in any guarantee of gaining all the money that you put in just to reach your dream, then it really wasn’t worth anything. It’s great to be doing something you love, but we all need money to survive and live by to make it through. In today’s world, no one has the time to really consider what it is that they truly have a drive of passion for as a job and, therefore, Steve Jobs commencement speech and inspirational words, “Stay hungry, stay foolish” (Steve Jobs 2005) are the same information everybody else says to each other and are nothing new.
