In Writing Project 3, I was expected to write an argumentative essay addressing the topic of social inequality in the United States and what needs to change in order to create a less divisive society. I needed to write a two-page proposal about my social discourse and provide an analysis that focuses on why I choose the topic and how does it demonstrate inequality in this country. Then, I was expected to write a 7-8 page argumentative essay about the positions of others on the issue and understanding from their perspectives, while being able to contribute my viewpoint. The genre that I approached was gender inequality within sports that is caused by the media. I chose this topic because my English teacher in High School showed my class a documentary of female athletes being objectified in sports unlike male athletes, so I wanted to learn more about this issue and why were women being treated differently than man in the same profession. …show more content…
For my paper, I was asked to discuss about the topic as an argumentative issue that involved social inequity resulting in inequality within hiring and paying in the same scale between groups, media portrayals, or profiling against social groups.
Through writing project 3, I first explored different facets of social disparity or discrimination that had to be from popular and academic articles. This process helped me complete my proposal by helping me decide on a issue that would explain how my position relates to other positions or contradicts them. When analysing my topic, I would use rhetoric in the different genres that I found for gender inequality within sports and try to find what people are saying about my issue that would benefit or contradict my opinion on the
topic. Before I wrote writing project 3, I was excited to start it because I already had a topic in mind as I did some research on different articles and thought I had a good understanding of people's thoughts on the issue. The first step that I took when writing this argumentative essay was to highlight key and interesting points from the articles that would benefit or contradict my opinion on the issue. Then, after researching and having an idea on how I wanted to write my paper, I hit my first roadblock where I did not know how to start my introduction. When I stumble upon situations like these, I would usually procrastinate, until something came to me or I tried perfecting the paragraph so much that in the end I am not satisfied with the outcome. I addressed this situation by leaving my introduction or any other paragraph till the end, until I wrote the rest of my paper, so I would have a clear idea of how to start my introduction and what it should contain. Through the writing process of WP3, I had learned how to understand writing as a process and that it takes time to formulate an argumentative paper that meets the standards of the academic. Also, I should not rush writing my papers at the last minute due to my procrastination being involved. And I want to put my best efforts into my writing by leaving my procrastination behind, so I can become a better writer in the future.
This is a case study on the impact that the media has on People of color in sports. This cases study will show the central issue, what 's at stake, who 's involved and their point of view, actions or consideration to address this issue, the efforts to address issue working and why or why not these efforts working.
Unintentionally, a lot of us have been boxed into institutions that promote gender inequality. Even though this was more prominent decades ago, we still see how prevalent it is in today’s world. According to the authors of the book, Gender: Ideas, Interactions, Institutions, Lisa Wade and Myra Marx Ferree define gendered institutions as “the one in which gender is used as an organizing principle” (Wade and Ferree, 167). A great example of such a gendered institution is the sports industry. Specifically in this industry, we see how men and women are separated and often differently valued into social spaces or activities and in return often unequal consequences. This paper will discuss the stigma of sports, how gender is used to separate athletes, and also what we can learn from sports at Iowa State.

Gender inequality affected sporting activities among high school and colleges in America in the 1970s, to an extent that the female gender were marginalized and could not freely participate in games like athletics, basketball and hockey (Houser, 2013). There even existed one sporting body, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which over saw the sporting activities at this level. This body was reported to be in opposition of the female gender sporting activities. It was not until the year 1972, when the popular title IX, was passed into law. This title read that “no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” The core theme of title IX was to eliminate discrimination in the sporting sector and to promote the status of the female gender in the same field. This title is contained in the Education Amendment Act of the year 1972, and it was meant to fill the gaps present in the title VII, which was included in the Civil Rights applied into law in the year1964 (ibid). It after the emergence of this title that brought the motivation towards the implementation of equality in the sporting sector, an idea that was pushed for by the popular Lonnie Leotus “Lee” Morrison. This essay accounts for the efforts made by Morrison in effort towards achieving gender equality in sports at high school and college level.
Title IX qualifies as a social justice issue because it addresses social inequalities. Women before Title IX were not accorded the same rights as men in federally funded school systems, such as quality of education in certain circumstances or equal opportunity to participate in sports programs. These inequalities in education lead to further injustices, such as unequal distribution of women in high level positions and unequal pay, since women who have a deficient education do not rise as high as women who received an equal one. In athletics, women who did not have an opportunity to participate in the athletic program of their choice may not have reached their full potential. This is usually due to a lack of equipment or instruction, but it could also lead to a missed opportunity to go to college.
It has taken many years for women to gain a semblance of equality in sports. Throughout history, women have been both excluded from playing sports and discriminated against in sports. Men’s sports have always dominated the college athletic field, but women were finally given a fighting chance after Title IX was passed. Title IX, among other things, requires scholarships to be equally proportioned between men and women’s sports. Although this was a huge gain for women, gender inequality still exists in sports today. An example of this persisting inequality can be seen when looking at men’s baseball and women’s softball. In college, baseball and softball are both major NCAA sports. It is widely accepted throughout today’s society that baseball is a man’s sport, and softball is a woman’s sport. Very few people question why the two sexes are separated into two different sports, or wonder why women play softball instead of baseball. Fewer people know that women have been essentially excluded from playing baseball for a long time. This paper will focus on why softball has not changed the way women’s basketball has, why women continue to play softball, the possibilities and dynamics of women playing baseball with and without men, and the most discriminating aspect of women being banned from playing professional baseball.

The sum of one’s total assets excluding the liabilities equates the person’s wealth also known as the net worth. Investments, residents, cash, real estates and everything owned by an individual are their assets.In reality, the United States is among the richest countries in the world, though a few people creating a major gap between the richest, the middle class and the poor control most of its wealth. Income inequality continues to increase in today’s world, especially in the United States. Income inequality means the unequal distribution between individuals’ assets, wealth, or income. In the Twilight of the Elites, Christopher Hayes, a liberal journalist, states the inequality gap between the rich and the poor are increasing widening, and there need to have things done - tax the rich, provide better education - in order to shortening the inequality gap. America is a meritocratic country, which means that everybody has equal opportunity to be successful regardless of their class privileges or wealth. However, equality of opportunity does not equal equality of outcomes. People are having more opportunities to find a better job, but their incomes are a lot less compared to the top ten percent rich people. In this way, the poor people will never climb up the ladder to high status and become millionaires. Therefore, the government needs to increase all the tax rates on rich people in order to reduce income inequality.
