If you were to look back at your life and your achievements would you be proud and say you achieved as many as possible. Nobody knows when they'll meet their demise or end. So it is best to alway try your hardest and try to achieve your goals even when the odds are against you. Randy Pausch was unfortunately given the devastating news about his terminal illness and it leads him to do a lecture called the last lecture. Where others had to pretend that it was their last lecture Randy Pausch did not have too. He didn't talk about his cancer or his family, but he did talk about his childhood dreams and how he tried to achieve as many as he could. When somebody is usually faced with such a faith they'll plunge into despair, but not randy his lecture
“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no help at all. Dale Carnegie believed that perseverance could overcome even the harshest obstacles. Perseverance is inspired by a purpose, an unsatisfied drive to achieve a goal. During a cataclysmic event, only people with a purpose endure.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts”
This book is telling a story about two African American boys (Wes A and Wes P) who have the same name and grew up at same community, but they have a very different life. The author, Wes A, begins his life in a tough Baltimore neighborhood and end up as a Rhodes Scholar, Wall Streeter, and a white house fellow; The other Wes Moore begins at the same place in Baltimore , but ends up in prison for the rest of his life. Then why do they have the same experience, but still have a totally different life? I will agree here that environment (family environment, school education environment and society environment) is one of the biggest reasons for their different.
He achieved so many of his dreams and lead his life in a such a magnificent way. To me his statement speaks the truth. To lead your life in the best way possible for you, is to pursue and achieve your dreams first. By doing this, you can lead your life doing what you love and living in the way you want. No one wants to live their life not pursuing something.
In this passage, the audience truly sees the meaning behind Herbert Kohl's message. His purpose for writing comes back to the fact that people interpret situations differently in every way. Kohl not only wanted to highlight the purpose behind wanting to learn something new but he also wanted readers to be aware that most time it does not come down to the inability of someone who doesn't want to learn but the real reason behind why they don't want to. People have different opinions on topics such as these but Kohl wanted to show that being able to want to stand up for your culture and the meanings behind it are rather important. Behind Kohl's purpose for writing, we see an insight into his past life relating to Wilfredo's. Kohl's reason for
A child of abuse and neglect, Chris McCandless awed the world with his inspiring trip across the nation to find himself in Alaska. Leaving his well off life and his problematic family behind to be true to his ideas of life. His life impacted the people who knew him well and the strangers that drove him to his haven. When the story of this young man hitch hiking across the country broke ground, it made many people question if this boy was just crazy or did he really have a true understanding on the day to day live we were living and where we were going wrong. Although some critics have conceived the idea that Chris McCandless was just a crazed mad man with schizophrenia and the unachievable idea of true happiness. Many believe he was a new
The balance of saying what you believe and what other will think of you for saying it is hard. had always been there for Ronald Reagan before being president, he was in the spotlight as an actor. One point of criticism was after he became president and tensions were high. How he handled it was on of the ways he influenced the American way.
Riker’s Island may be closing its door, but it certainly won’t be anytime soon. The plan to close is contingent on minimizing the jail population from 10,000 to 5,000 the doing of which could take up to ten years. Furthermore, the plan would include the resurrecting of modern jails in all five boroughs of New York. With the closure imminent politicians have already voiced concerns of NIMBY, the theory of “not in my backyard” and have begun issuing statements protesting the “new Riker’s.” This is especially true for Staten Island where Congressman Dan Donovan has been quoted as claiming that
“Justice cannot be for one side alone, but must be for both” (Roosevelt). The goal of America’s legal system as we know it is that everyone is given an equal opportunity to stick up for what they may or may not have done, as described by former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Also this is what officials strive for, it is not always the case. Facts can be skewed, distorted, or misrepresented to make one side seem to be guilty without a doubt and to make the other side seem as if they have done nothing wrong. The Crucible by Arthur Miller begins and ends with one-sided accusations of witchcraft. It all results from a group of girls who had been dancing in the woods. After two fall sick, the accusations begin. The girls who were dancing, especially Abigail Williams begin blaming others to look less guilty themselves. Accusations are flying left and right so that soon, hundreds are in jail and over a dozen are executed. Abby’s main goal is to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor, so she can be with John Proctor, a man she previously had an affair with. However, John is not interested in Abby and his
Captain America’s behavior, life, and mottos model those of a hero, but Captain did not start like a hero. Steve Rogers started with the qualities of a hero, he then overcame the death of his mentor, and then sacrificed his life to save America. Captain America began his journey as a Good Son, before he grew into a Hero.
The Last Lecture takes the reader into the life of author Randy Pausch. In the book, the stories and concepts that Pausch teaches were all based from his last lecture hence the book being called The Last Lecture. He talks about his childhood and what dreams he had as a child. He goes on and teaches the reader on how he achieved his goals as he went older. He puts out that thinking and dreaming about his childhood puts him a unique place because his own childhood made him the person he was. He mentions that he being a computer scientist and having pancreatic cancer doesn’t make him unique but his childhood. By reading this book, the reader was able to learn a lot from this one person who was struggling in life because of his illness and learns how he was able to get through that.
Randy Pausch, with the limited time he had left in the world, changed from a good person to a better person. People think back on their mistakes and how they messed up and they try to fix it. With time, anything can happen. After finding out about his cancer, Randy used the time he had left to teach life lessons to his kids in a way that will make them into better people.“Find the best in everybody. Wait long enough, and people will surprise and impress you. It might even take years, but people will show you their good side. Just keep waiting (pg.153).” Randy is teaching them that all people are good it just takes time for them to show it. Throughout the book, The Last Lecture, Randy teaches his kids lessons that he would not be able to teach them when they are older because Randy was going to die. So Randy tapes his last lecture and gives it to his to kids so they can look back when they do not know what to do. He was trying to teach them that people are more important than things and nothing can change that. As Randy displayed in chapter 15, no new Volkswagen Cabrio convertible is more important than a human being because things are just
There are so many wonderful quotes and jewels of wisdom and inspiration in “The Last Lecture” given by Randy Pausch that it was difficult to pick just one to write about. Given his circumstances and the ultimate finality of his prognosis it is amazing that he could give such a speech at all. I have chosen the following few sentences from his speech to reflect upon relevant to my own life: “It is what it is and we can’t change it. We just have to decide how we are going to respond to it. We can not change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.” It is such an all encompassing philosophy of how to handle what life throws at you. It appeals to the higher version of “self” in each of us to rise above reaction and make conscious choices. It is applicable in almost every situation. In fact, as far as “life skills” goes, it could be considered equivalent to the “Golden Rule”.
Gary Goldstein our guest speaker openly shared his story with a class full of strangers, not knowing if the class full of young teenagers would care for what he was saying or if they were going to judge him. I'm sure that some of us did, but that was not what Goldstein was thinking about, he was thinking that he came here to inspire and enlighten a bunch 11th graders. Hoping to prevent what happened to him from us. Gary Goldstein was arrested on June 13, 1998, for robbing a dry cleaning store.
This really stuck with me because I sometimes get frustrated easily which is not a good thing. Like Randy said, everyone has a good side, we only have to be patient enough with them to see it. Brick walls really are there to be broken down and I feel like the only brick wall that can stop me is myself because I know that if I put my heart to anything, I can get it done. I think the fact that Randy one of the reasons randy became a professor is to help people achieve the childhood dreams. I think it is very important to help people in this world because when you help people, they will remember you forever and you would have made a positive impact on their lives. Even though I do some charity work at my, this speech has inspired me to even do more to help other people. Even though I don’t plan on being a professor or being in academia, I plan to help make people’s lives better if I don’t help them achieve their childhood
